I find myself to be a VERY agreeable person to a fault. I completely relate when he says agreeable people sometimes don't even know what they want at all. I've realized I'm so self conscious about how I treat other people that I forget what I enjoy and desire because that's no longer my focus-- even in acting class when the director says to act truthfully to myself, I honestly don't know how to do that. Because I'm hyper aware of myself I find flaws that probably don't even exist in me, and I'm terrified of having to live by myself, solve my own issues, and face conflict. I've been living for other people and I thank Mr. Peterson for making me reevaluate myself. I have to learn how to say no and put myself first for a change.

There are many women who are interested in things, and there are many men who are interested in people. (Jordan Peterson is obviously very interested in people since he is a psychologist.) While women in general TEND to be interested in people and men TEND to be interested in things it doesn't say too much about individuals. It's no use to say that men and women are fundamentally different; it's just that there are general tendencies of each gender. The problem with emphasizing these gender generalities is that it can influence people to believe that all men should be this way or all women should be that way. Then women or men who deviate from what is considered normal for their gender would feel like they don't belong or that they should change.

"Emphasising" for you means just talking out lead,right? How about we suppress all our instinctual traits(not talking gender specific traits), see how that goes. Suppression is not the anti-dote to inequality or anything that creates a problem psychologically or even socially. We SHOULD discuss them and we SHOULD let people be people and not ostracise behaviour or ban certain speech. OP's comment is especially funny to me, because this sounds exactly like how my head sounded when I had OCD.
@simus72316 жыл бұрын
Allison Lee I generally agree with you and Peterson himself has acknowledged that individual differences trump group tendencies, but it isn’t your notion of individuality that is being challenged it’s the notion that there are no differences between the sexes. While these sort of statistical generalities paint in broad strokes they still need to be mentioned because they at least give us a framework through which to understand how we got to where we are as men and women. Between the politically correct narrative that there are no inherent differences and one that paints broadly I’ll take the latter because it at least is true and gives us something to work with.
@owenanthony92125 жыл бұрын
Men and women are completely different. It isnt meant to be a negative thing that men are better at some things and women are better at others. You can argue that each gender can do whatever the other can and yes but not to the same level of ability based on genetics. Men are stronger, someone had to protect the woman and child and someone had to take care of the next generation. We all have a role

What impresses me about Peterson is you can tell he's done the legwork in coming up with his theories, they've been properly roadtested. He's spot on, agreeable people are their own worst enemies and readily taken advantage of by more 'dominant' less agreeable people. Another way I'd put it would be selfless people vs selfish people. What's frustrating is how to break free of that as it's intrinsically linked to one's identity and personality: how do you overcome a lifetime of programmed responses which can be self-defeating? Even more so in a competitive environment where people may/do not have your best interests at heart.

Did you open a book and study the required material? Did you mentally give up and stop caring? Are you surrounding yourself with people that are making a good influence on you and supporting your goals along the way? Listening to Peterson talking about the different personality traits, with a focus on women made me naturally wonder where I fit in. I am female but grew up with two older brothers, to which I partly attribute my competetivness to. From the descriptions I would probably define myself as high on consciousnesses and low on agreeablness. Performance is always important to me and I get very frustrated by others being lazy and bringing group work down. Similarily, perphaps due to my higher performances, I often believe what I am doing is right and therefore do not easily agree with others. I like listening to others and I am also willing to change my opinions but once I realise that the other person can't formulate an argument I stop listening. But here I come to my question: Peterson mentioned that being high on the spectrum for agreeabless is also associated with avoiding fights. I myself hate fights. Whenever a friend would fight with me, if she is not that important to me I would just forget about her and never speak to her again, to avoid a drama. In my relationship that is of course not possible but I would still try to avoid fights. Would this not be in conflict with my earlier mentioned observations that I am more disagreeable? I am genually curious- please, only kind words ♥️

As we have seen in this video, many people often speak about the differences between men and women and many modern feminists speak about the WOMEN'S RIGHTS. It is interesting that people do not go into the Etymology of the word RIGHT. This is the study of the history of words, their origins, and how their form and meaning have changed over time. By extension, the term "the etymology (of a word)" means the origin of the particular word. For the past few weeks I have enjoyed Professor Jordan Peterson pit his wits against many women who claim that they ," HAVE THEIR RIGHTS". These women would be rather surprised and impressed as what is the origin of the words " TO HAVE A RIGHT! and to DEMAND A RIGHT!" when it comes to men and women having " SAME RIGHTS". In modern times we define RIGHTS as that legal claim, that ability, that permission, that privilege or authority to DO something. Going back in Roman and Greek history even back to Arabic days when Egypt built its pyramids, the role of men and women was rather different from what we know it now. Men were measured in various ways, but there were intimate actions which some men did better than others and it is not surprising that many superior measures were related to the male genitalia. Male humans have a larger genitalia to body size than most animals. This can be traced back to the evolution of the upright man's stance which over time led to the unconcealed display of the phallus. The penis has no means of attachment nor any bones that might restrict the 'right' or the 'straight motion'. While this makes face to face intercourse possible between male and female humans, as well as the intimate process being more pleasurable, it is also the root of the development of erectile dysfunction in many male humans. So in the old days, here was an intimate situation for a man to be described as, " HE HAS THE RIGHT equipment" or "HE DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT equipment!" Amongst Arabic men drinking together, even these days, they would say that it is imperative to marry a woman, a gentle women with the qualifications to be a mother as , " NOT HAVING THE SAME 'RIGHTS' AS MEN! " but the knowledge transfer in that expression, to a European feminist would send her wild, but if she understood the situation being inferred , she would be so glad that her "rights" were not the same "rights" as those of men! In a modern society there are people who call themselves women and who have " MEN'S RIGHTS" an they seek surgical interventions! The English language lost the real HISTORIC vision of the word describing was was, "RIGHT" and " STRAIGHT" and " ERECT" but Arabic, Roman/Latin and Greek language including my own mother language, still contains a relation to what , " HAVING A RIGHT one" meant in the old says. So let me try leading all the English speaking nations to depict what was claiming to have " A RIGHT" meant in the old Arabic, Roman, Greek days . I might as well first define what is right, where the readers must now widen their thinking process to associate what the Arabs , Romans, Greek thought about and what was that men had which gave them a RIGHT, or ABILILTY, to DO and to DIRECT a particular intimate function with great success. RIGHT------ good, fair, proper, fitting, straight, not bent, direct, erect, moving, leading in a straight line, to lead straight, to lead right. In Greek ORECTOS -------- means erect, upright, stretched out, upright and stiff as a good tool, In Latin, RECTUS ------------- means straight , right, upright position. and other related words are ---- RECTA-- RECTUS-- RECTE --DIRECTUS-- DERECTUS meaning PERPENDICULAR. ERECTUS--- being right for a function........ BEING STIFF. Now, if an Arabic and Equator hugging men would hear the women feminists with sort haircuts and wide shoulders speaking to Professor Jordan Peterson saying , "We have the same right as a man!" they would pity them and they would start wondering about the type of hairstyle , the voice, the aggression they show to other men, as in the case of one with the same RIGHTS AS MEN, saying to Ben Shapiro, " do you want to go home in an ambulance!" There are many others women who, " claim that they have the same "RIGHT" as men", and in the case of many women interviewers as Cathy Newman and Cathy Areu, well they seem not to have the same "RIGHTS" as men, but they seem to have evolved the TOXIC aggression that belongs to men a Ms. Areu describes. Without going into details, it appears that the XX and XY, do produce good and healthy female and male different and well defined RIGHTS , but there are to be found some cross diversity and it seems that nature does, cross breeds these male and female RIGHTS, which need surgical interventions! Well I fully agree with Professor Jordan Peterson that women should have EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES but because women and men do not have the same "RIGHT" it is reasonable and logical to assume that men and women will never have EQUALITY OF OUTCOME............. because respecting what Arabs, Roman, Latin, Greek words describe...... it is only true man that has a right! There are men who also do not have "rights" and when it comes to women, they should thank God that they do not have the same right as a man! Reference to be made to Arabic, Roman, Latin, Greek languages!

It's good to have an understanding of our biology and the differences that exist between the sexes - but it shouldn't be used as a reason to hold people back or say they can't do XY or Z. Time and time again we see women breaking all kinds of physical and psychological barriers that the previous generation would have not thought was within their emotional or physical capacity. Same with men. I agree biology plays a large part but it shouldn't be used to limit people..... and that is what sexists tend to do with this information it seems. He is of course speaking generally here which I understand is unavoidable, it's worth knowing there are plenty of assertive women who are great mothers and plenty of great fathers who are very agreeable.

I'd say videos like these are more useful for identifying where the personality tendencies exist and why, so that we can better relate to each other. In terms of personality, anyone can be an exception case in some observable way, or able to function past their natural tendencies (which I think is why JP mentions assertiveness training for agreeable people in the workplace).

He never said women can't do that shit for fucks sake. He's only trying to explain what's the GENERAL differences between the two genders. Of course there's going to be a woman who can do something phenomenal as do will men. In the end of the day what matters here is we shouldn't give a fuck about genders but we should give a fuck about the individual.
@raymondhollingsworth36436 жыл бұрын
And that's why the US Army had to lower physical standards for women to pass combat schools because they do not have the upper body strength to handle it. Yes there are exceptions but they are few and far in between. The only reason the first women passed Ranger School is because they allowed them multiple tries which is almost unheard of. Guarantee you the standards were lowered and male soldiers were pressured to give a pass in their review. Noe the Marie Corp is being pressured the same way.
@JoybuzzerX6 жыл бұрын
What physical and psychological barriers? In using an example from a previous replier, I don't believe it's a matter of if an individual woman could do something, but a matter that the majority couldn't. We take the military/special forces training/testing. Most women (lots of men as well, in the case of special forces) can't pass the tests. Now, if 96% of women can't pass the testing done, it starts to become a matter of "Do we still allow them to try, wasting time and money on trying to train them up, or just keep them out." Now. I'm of the thought, allow any who want to try, try, but don't dumb it down. "I can't pass this test, because I'm a normal woman." shouldn't mean, "So make it easier." it should mean they say, "Then you're just not qualified for the job." After all, if a woman can do the job at a lower level of requirement, then what's wrong with those males who could pass the woman's testing but not the male standard?

Every time that someone makes an observation about women as a gender...(every time) a woman will say "but xxxx is not like that! " I think that response itself, is an observation of women as a gender.

Very interesting and as a woman interesting that I see things differently. It’s because of men’ strength that I fear standing up against them and as a single woman I find myself more vulnerable than married women for a host of reasons. Primarily, I have no male partner to defend me (no ring to indicate this either) so I’m fair game and go out into the world alone. One of the sad reasons child marriages occur is ironically to protect women from random men.

Jordan does such a great job of defining disciplines. I hope in the future that idealism is more explained like a discipline. I, for one, am glad men and women are different. For whatever reason, perhaps just because Peterson needs to make waves to sell his books or his ideas, it seems he makes intelligent points and then finds conclusions that are edgy--but in reality he could just as easily find reasons that are much more endearing or unifying--and just doesn't. For example: Nothing is the infant's fault, a woman has to be responsive to what the child needs, be very sensitive to the threats of that child (at 9 months or so) THEREFORE the price that women pay to have intimate relationship with infants is that their nervous system is wired to perform that role optimally AND THE DISADVANTAGE HAVING A TEMPERAMENT LIKE THAT DOESN'T WORK WITH ADULT MEN, ESPECIALLY IN A BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT. What in the hell is that?? How does he tie these things together like this?
@Tantive6 жыл бұрын
A temperament has advantages and drawbacks in differing enviroments
@merita23596 жыл бұрын
i suggest you listen/watch this video again to understand it fully. he actually brought it into context and you have to be focused and alert throughout the video to see the bigger picture he paints. the way he ties things together cross-disciplinary is a trait high IQ people have. he makes a lot of sense in this video. he also states he put forward a HYPOTHESIS about that infant-mother relationship and the nervous system. and if you break it down in the way you just did, lacking detail, then it sure as hell wont make sense to you.

2:34 When a woman hits a man it doesn't harm him emotionally? Then why don't men ignore small men who spit on them? Interesting that a psychologist totally ignores male feelings damaged by physical violence.
@JohnDoe-zl6qw7 жыл бұрын
His discussion wasn't concerning the emotional impact of domestic violence; which most certainly exists for men as well as women (and which I'm sure Perterson would agree with based on the other lectures of his I've seen). Rather, this particular lecture was devoted to the physical differences between men and women and how these contribute, in part, to the psychological, emotional, and personality differences between the sexes with an emphasis on females. It's a thirteen minute snippet; there's literally hours of his lectures posted on KZbin. I don't think he ignores male feelings damaged by physical violence; it just wasn't the main topic of this snippet.
