I can't believe JP's argument... So, if anybody says "I'm an atheist", that person is basically having a mental disorder, They just don't know what they're saying... Really?... That's your best argument in a public debate of ideas?... That you're so smart and so right about your beliefs, and that the rest of us are dumb and crazy?

JP is psychologists and so what I think when someone says "I don't believe in God", they're basically uttering words that their conscious Ego is saying. Human psyche has all other components that acts together to make sense of the real world and can act independently. He deals with behaviour, emotional and cognitive problems. Period. He is not the judge of other people's knowledge and erudition. In a public debate, he has to debate, not telling others they're crazy. That's for his private practice with his patients.

He never claimed that though. Only that he was showing signs of doubt by the way he sounded and I agree with that. He did sound doubtful in his tone. If I see that someone is upset and I say to them, "Something is bothering you" does that mean I 'm claiming to know their mind more than they do? Of course not. A person can be trained to see outward signs, body language, mannerisms, etc that let them know some things that are going on in the the person's mind. That's not the same thing as mind reading or knowing every thought is it? I mean you don't even need to be trained to do this. We do it intuitively as humans all the time.

@@monsterhuntervideos4446 you're reading into it based on a preconceived bias. If there were any rationality to your judgement, you wouldn't have to default to "i know what you think/feel better than you do", you could prove your assumption by making them work through their own logic to that endpoint. Peterson was out of his depth in this one, and defaulted to an embarrassing "argument" of subjectivity.

@@monsterhuntervideos4446 No, you can't. A mannerism can be interpreted in thousands of different ways, and assuming one must 100% be a sign of doubt is just what you WANT it to be based on bias. He could have easily just been considering how to phrase his argument (the most likely option by a mile). Again, if it were a valid claim, you'd be able to show that doubt within their argument using logic. And that would be more valid than your subjective interpretation of body language. But you can't, because it isn't a valid claim. You hear a certain tone and ascribe doubt to it, but that doesn't mean you're right. Even body language "experts" are often vague and often jump to false conclusions. It's not a science or form of evidence by any means.

@@milzhere I never said it was an exact science and mistakes are not made, but nevertheless, it's something we all experience. Sometimes we can just see doubt or that something's wrong. Human beings just have an inherent ability to somewhat read people. Who said anything about it being science? In my experience I've been right most of the time when detecting a feeling in someone by body language. We don't need to know the science behind how we're able to do that in order to experience that we do it, anymore than I need to fully understand my brain to be able to use it.

JP has a very interesting and symbol heavy take on his approach to reality. He uses his philosophy to extract meaning from narratives and give you an interesting take on both the story and the message of that story. However, as you can tell from the rest of this debate, that approach to reality is often obfuscated by his interpretations. So much so he can't even admit atheists exist. He’s not saying that at all. His argument of morality is not that you don’t have a sense of morality without God, but rather that you can’t logically explain it without an objective validation that would regard it as moral or immoral, otherwise it’s just a matter of opinion. His other point about acting like you believe in a god speaks more to the psychology of individuals. The majority of the world, whether they claim to believe in a god or not centers their psychology around some aspect of their life that takes the place of God or a god, consciously or subconsciously. You may not believe that there is a god but if you are doing okay in your life you have something taking his place. “True atheist” who do not have anything filling the void of god have trouble living under basic social norms because there is no form of objective structure that makes sense to them.

One of the very few times that my conclusions were not identical to Jordan Peterson's was his belief that Marxism is synonymous with Secular Humanism. In fact, they are two entirely different realities. Many people confuse and often equate Secular Humanism, Marxism, as well as Paganism as if they were one in the same. Secular humanism is the philosophy that reason through cognition is the most accurate, but by no means "only", vehicle by which human society may achieve development in its structures, values, and civil interactions. It is devoid of dogmas and absolute notions. A Classical Liberal (a modern- day rarity) is more often than not a secular humanist. Marxism is a RELIGION, a non theistic religion replete with dogmas and philosophical orthodoxy. Marxist societies are indistinguishable in form from Catholicism ! One may find the local cadres (parish priests), commissars (prelates), government officials or politburo (College of Cardinals), and Party General Secretary (Pope). It is a ridged hierarchical pyramid like the Roman Church. And even Paganism is a form of religious thinking whereby union with the Absolute Truth or reality is through identification with nature and its phenomenology. Today's political polarization has regrettably neutralized Classical Liberalism in the public forum and relegated it to theoretical study in college classrooms. Rather sad when one realizes that even a critical thinker like Dr. Peterson doesn't see it !

A lot of people don't seem to be aware. But Jordan Peterson is very politically conservative and politically resides in the right spectrum. Yes, he is "religious," but he's self-aware enough that people don't believe in Christianity as people once used to believe. That is to say, literally to believe in an almighty God in heaven who created humanity from lumps of clay. So Peterson is on a mission to redefine Christianity and changing what is required to be religious. But also for people to reinforce their reliance on religious institutions. However, most of this is out of fear of the opposite political spectrum. Peterson believes in the old Cold War narrative that godlessness equals socialism and communism and that socialism and communism equal death and destruction. That is why it is better to keep people religious, according to Peterson.

And then finally, he uses his fame and credentials as an authority figure to sell books on self-improvement, in the style of "12 quick life hacks" or "how to get rich quick" and then me monetize on this, essentially praying and profiting on peoples' credulity. He's your typical social conservative opportunist.

For Peterson (and a lot of other people too considering how the word is used ) truths are not just logically consistent statements that match reality. He believes truths are also assumptions embedded in your behavior, assumptions that you act as if they are truth. Some of these are really complex (you can ask why over and over again and unravel are pretty large chain of assumptions) and you will fumble really hard into trying to put it into neat propositions that are demonstrably true and logically follow from each other. You can see this in the endless story of moral philosophy, for example Kant builds a massive framework for morality and then it gets smashed by critics like Nietzsche. Basically in his wider concept of truth it is not quite that easy to state all truths in propositions.

He isn't doing so great on the political front, but never mind, he's switched to religion. I believe everything JP tells me because he uses these big words I don't understand. That tells me right off that he's smarter than I am. Last night I prayed to JP for clarity and in a dream he told me he was god. And I believed him, cuz like I said he uses all these biggly words. And just lately on twitter, he told me which women are beautiful and which are not so that I now know heavier set women are very unattractive, so I am ditching my present girlfriend and looking for one that only eats beef and salt. Also one that doesn't wear makeup because women who wear makeup are inviting sexual harassment. This is something he actually said, (look it up) By his own admission he was accused three times of sexual harassment by former students who were probably wearing makeup. And I know he is right about all this because he is god and uses all these big words. I rely entirely on JP to tell me what to think. I never question him. I Pray in Jordan Peterson's name, Amen. I don't think Jordan really believes in God in a strictly traditional sense at all, thats why he never says he believes in such things, because when push comes to shove he doesn't. When you engage in a debate and its something you don't really believe it shows and this is an example, honestly Peterson is better off doing his usual Psychoanalysis stuff of why you can't achieve what you want or why you don't take responsibility for your actions etc.Matt Dillahunty on the other hand believes that if you believe you are a woman then you are one, i've seen pictures of some of those women and they do not present well. I can only conclude that they are in fact not woman but men in dresses, and therefore based on pictorial evidence Matt Dillahunty is wrong. Matt Dillahunty actual twiter quote. If 90% of trans women have dicks, then those people are women because they believe it" So believing is the rational reason for existing, according to Matt Dillahunty. He should stick to religion, hes a great debater on those topics.

But what if you're a dictator and will face zero repercussions for throwing someone off a stage? Self-interest is now off the table. Why not do it then?

He could have also said, prove that you value yourself. Dillahunty would have resorted to self-feelings, which he cannot demonstrate, thus cannot be a premise of any proposition, lest it be challenged.

People in power do it all the time. It's unbelievable how removed from reality Peterson's followers are, you are truly picked among the most uneducated... I feel sorry for you.

@@farhan00 You are so wrong. Anyone can prove that they value themselves by action, by defending themselves for example. Man the stupidity is off the rails...

JP doesn’t think Matt believes, but he simply outsmarted Matt and he nicely tried to show Matt his hypocrisy.

He did nothing of the sort. JP performance here was nothing but embarrassing and amateurish.

This is kind of a weak argument from Matt. Why would he not throw Harris off the stage? Because he doesn't want it to be done to himself? So, what is the underlying propositional knowledge that makes someone intrinsically valuable? You can't just brush of saying that's a propositional knowledge. It is not. It's a personal preference that people get to choose through a narrative. And if the narrative breaks, the view breaks. I think this is the point that Peterson makes. People hold on to moral beliefs through narratives. The sooner narrative is not there but only the belief (Matt's case), the sooner the belief dies down. Take a view at our history.

it has nothing to do with a "moral code" ... matt doesn't have one, he admits that his "morals" change based on the particular situation at hand... which is totally subjective, it would have to be since its based on his own personal perspective, and nothing more... but for me, what really trips me out, is when the atheist's appeal to "logic".. and "reason"... and "truth".... they claim that if something cant be proven to exist scientifically then we shouldn't believe it... and logic and reason CANNOT be scientifically proven to exist... in fact its the opposite, science pre-supposes that our ability to reason exists.. in order to conduct science you need FAITH in your own cognitive ability to discern truth from lies, or logic from nonsense... these atheists know that there is something unique and divine about Mankind, because they appeal to it.. but then when pressed they try to pretend like we are just evolved meat sacks, and there really is nothing special about us... i have a hard time making sense of this, it seems 100% contradictory...

You are not alone. Well-said. Scientism is dangerous. It’s also hard not to notice that there’s actually nothing objectively binding in Matt’s secular humanism.
