One of the best conversations you will hear. I love how Jordan pushed back on some of Gads points, and didn't just mindlessly agree with him like most interviewers. I also love to see Jordan slowly returning to peak form.

Social constructivism as a learning theory is very practical indeed, and as an assessment theory has shown over and over again to lead to best learning outcomes. With that said, goes astray when explaining truth as an individual explanation and a construct, or seeing reality somehow disconnected from reality. That gives rise to relativism and ,,alternative facts".

Dear Dr. Peterson, forgive me for blowing a little purple smoke in your direction, but I admire the way you seem to hold up and acknowledge those who supported you in the past when so many were trying to bring you down. That's a character thang.

Jordan saying the reasons simple solutions get traction is cause they are simple blew my mind. I believe he was implying that since the solutions are so easy it’s faster for mobs to grasp them.

Would be great to have a defintion of social constructivism if you’re gonna tie it with postmodernism since social constructivism came as early as Lev Vygtosky, who worked during the early 1900s. Social constructivism deals more with learning, rather than identity. That learning takes place in social interaction, rather than what Piaget argued: within the individual through stages. But then again, JBP never has any distinct definitions or explanations as to what postmodernism is so, what to expect 🤷🏻♂️

Some influential conflict resolution proceedures employed by mediators (viz., narrative mediation) are built upon the notion that knowledge is socially constructed. The corollary is that the actual conflict itself is not a "real" conflict but is merely perceived to be one by the parties in conflict. This is a social constructivists diagnosis of a conflict. The remedy, therefore, is for the parties to reconstruct their perception of the situation such that the conflict almost disappears. To give a terrible example (but it makes my point), if you are in conflict with your boss because you are not meeting your targets you both might change your story of the conflict. You both might decide that what is of value is that you as an employee do your best. Sometimes you might miss your targets and sometime in the future, you might exceed your targets - which you must do if you are able to. So the resolution would be for both parties to co-construct a new narrative/story which gives a different account of right and wrong. Now, from this platform, from this narrative, they can discuss a settlement if still needed. I'm not claiming I agree with this idea but I just think it's interesting how social constructivism guides conflict resolution

It seems to me that it is likely that every thing is socially constructed, but I don’t agree with the cynical view of that possibility, it seems to me that just because culture may be socially constructed doesn’t mean that their is anything inherently destructive to individuals or groups if reality is completely socially constructed. Even if gender, for instance is socially constructed, why would gender roles then be limiting to individuals? Why would such a societal institution of gender be better off if it were completely broken down? Its like with genetics, just knowing what each gene expresses in its current configuration does not mean that one should assume that by making a few changes one can ‘fix’ one thing or another- because what is then still unknown, how each individual gene expression interacts with all the other millions of gene expressions. Messing with one or two genes on one chromosome could lead to unintended consequences to any number of genes on some or all the other chromosomes, and the risk to the person and their biological functioning as a whole is quite emmense. It seems to me that we should not see the current socially constructed reality as anything distinct from the assumption of evolution- that what has evolved is the most adaptive organism within its environment. Yes, there are numerous cultures that vary dramatically in terms of meaning at every level of trope, but the result of persistence is still a product of the social interactive, the socially constructed agreements that make up the environment with in which a given culture produces its current form. The idea that the cultural landscape as a whole could some how benefit by being completely scrapped to nothing and each individual given the freedom to construct the social fabric to their own liking ignores the very basis of fact, within the constructivists view that indeed the fabric has been created by-social interaction. Reality; if completely socially constructed is dependent on a well defined structure to allow for the very minute changes of its self over time as a distilation of all individual social negotiations, performed by individuals interacting with eachother everyday. The idea that one person has the intelectual falculties necessary to create a reality for themselves that is beneficial to them and able to sustain them within the broader social landscape without any meaningful socually negotiated terms seem absurd. Tear it all down and your left with nothing that is reasonably useful to the survival of the individual or a group. It seems that the same zeal attributed to all individuals as having some inherent ability to create social realities has a potentially very distructive assumption built into it- a do as thou wilst pressumption that what ever the individual creates will by only the fact that an individual created it from the intention of freedom and liberty only be able to create a system of meaning that is beheficial to them and their associated groups. There is no good reason to assume that such will be the case, because its creation contains no allowance for its tenants to be balanced and tuned to the needs of others, that the basis for socially constructed reality has as its main source of structural integrity- individual negotiation of a working consensus. It seems that the constructivists dangerously assume themselves to be infalible- that is a recipe for tyranny if there ever was one - especilly when put into the context of naturally self creating social hierarchies of power that are produced regardless of whether or not those that make up that hierarchy have dismanteled thier reality or not.

Multi factorial views are a part of understanding systems theory - complexity and chaos theory. The irony is that Jordan Peterson bemoans the collapsing of concepts into one factor but then points the existence that there is a god.

I think it's the other way around: language is shaped by the environment we live in. And language isn't the only factor through which we perceive the world and what determines our actions. The environment constantly and directly influences our perceptions, actions and language.
