If you walk through someone's life and find that they are not reasonably embedded in a hierarchy of social institutions - lacking an intimate partner, family, children, friends, job, career, educational pathway, engagement in civic responsibility, spiritual life, or routine - they are not depressed, they simply have a horrible life.

This message needs to be broadcasted to those that believe endlessly chasing materialism will bring them fulfillment. I can't believe that something so seemingly obvious isn't just self-evident. Jordan basically built his public image off of relaying the importance of adopting responsibility, but it's bewildering how he's one of a select few public figures that actively verbalize this.

" THEE message " is out here . . . on the internet. What more do you want ???? You can lead a horse to water. But you can't make it drink. And BTW greed is a normal part of our nature as intelligent animals. More is always better than less . . . is the common wisdom. Even spiritual folks have to struggle against idolatry. Paul wrote *COVETOUSNESS (greed) IS IDOLATRY.* Don't take my word. Look it up.

It’s hard starting that later in life never having any friends or family. People wonder why they see you as not having much worth and the predators look for the ones who are alone and going through hard times. (No fuck off if you’re a predator) lol but I’ve come a very long way lol lots I have come to realise to help others and I’m still learning. Im happy I’m out of the red zone and this is the fun part. Sanity is not all about coming from the mind. Proverbs says, “A happy face means a glad heart. The point is, if you talk the talk, be sure you walk the walk. As regards having someone, whether a spouse or a partner or a child or a friend, if you’ll be on the same page, then you’ll probably become sane in both your words and actions.

I read a meme saying "therapy is fine but what lot of people want in life is money". I think this message sorta correlates with this video. Being in a social structure such as marriage, frienships and religion is so vital - and those are the exact things suffering in cruel modern cities. I hope technology may bridge some gap i.e. make easy for ppl to connect with like minded ppl who believe in a cause greater than life. But real life interaction still can't be replaced!

You’re right, this is brilliant. This is how we maintain integration within ourselves and society. We are relational beings. Without my friends and family for sure, I’d eventually skew my view of reality. I think we all do this, like you illustrated. And yes, friends should be enjoyable, why choose unenjoyable friends?:) We are responsible for guiding potential friends on how to handle our hearts. I’m in no way saying I’m right here, I don’t know enough to do that anyway, but this caught my attention, you’ve said before that your spouse plus you equals a whole individual. Scripture also indicates the two will become one. But there are two ways I see this: two incomplete individuals forming a new and better creation together; and two incomplete individuals relying on each other to complete what’s lacking in them, which I believe can tend towards codependency (I don’t have a better word for it) or even idolatry of one another. It seems self/laterally focused, idk. I’m probably taking this train of thought too far, but there is a less desirable end to allowing someone else to make up too much of our shortcomings. Isn’t there? I don’t want my husband to become my world. We should inhabit a new space, and for me, the focus would be aspiring to God’s will for the union in carrying out His call upon it. And one might say, well that’s marriage, you’ll end up half a person if anything happens to your spouse. Does it have to be that devastating? Does marriage mean losing yourself into someone else? Or is it better understood as forming something stronger in addition to both individuals forming a union that has a call of God on it? I’m highly God-oriented so it doesn't make sense to me without Him being at the head of everything.

It's interesting, I went to an event on depression in London once and the crux of the event was that other people make us depressed, not ourselves. Not sure I agree but I do believe to some extent that happiness is a choice, that depression is a kind of negative self assessment on one's life/self. Society and even ourselves (negative/unhealthy thinking styles) can play a role imo in feeding depression: You should be this, you should be that, what's wrong with you, I don't like you, etc, etc.''

An ego that lacks identity may play the role of a saboteur to survive. This is because the ego has no other reason to exist without an identity. The ego will conduct its own shadow activities, including acting as a saboteur if the situation calls for it. The saboteur is an ego sub-personality that makes choices that result in behaviors contrary to our intentions because we got negative external feedback. The purpose of the saboteur is to bring us back home to the truth of who we are. The ego's job is to feel important, and its survival depends on it. The ego needs to fight and defend itself, and needs negative situations to arise so it can have something to do, worry about, or something to change.

He might as well have been describing Aspegers, at least from my viewpoint. I wasn't feeling especially depressed until I heard that shopping list of things I don't really have, then it reminded me lol! But then I remembered I'm an Aspie or at least that's the only useful diagnosis I've ever had, and although I recognise not all Aspies are the same (I only ever knew one and he decided to shuttle off this mortal coil) I just figure this IS my lot - it doesn't really matter that I know what I'd prefer my life to be, it's like wanting to win the lottery - it just ain't gonna happen at my age and in my particular circumstances, so I just have to make the best of a bad situation. And it wasn;t much different when younger - in some ways a whole lot worse because at a young age you EXPECT to be able to achieve all those things - I'm at that age where you don;t really give a s... what people think of you. I love JP though for his clarity.

I know I don't know you personally, but I've never met an aspie I didn't like and found engaging, smart, funny, and gifted. I'm ending prayers, blessing and virtual hugs for "staying in the game", of LIFE ❣️ I believe in you. 🌟 Never give up! Your potential for growth has no ceiling even if some paths aren't an option. Your superpower is thinking outside the box! With trusted guidance (friends, mentors, teachers, God), you can do amazing things - maybe not everything - but a good, productive, and meaningful life. @@curtiste3235 Thank you very much for your kind thoughts and wishes. I think the Aspie thing is a lot easier as you get older because it's more acceptale for an older person to be a bit eccentric - they just think it's age related - and I hardly care any more anyway! Nothing to lose I suppose. Best wishes to your son and yourself and anyone else involved in coping with this added complication. Personally, I like to keep myself as occupied as possible because it's a good age to live in, in some respects - (bottle half full and all that) - Even though I don't have kids, I feel lucky to be treated like a surrogate Dad by my friend's kids, who then grow up and have their own kids, so now I;m more like a Grandad - but not actually. I just have the stick and love moaning as I walk up the stairs! But seriously, kids are so funny as well as demanding, I just love the way they put on me and hoover up money - They keep me (relatively) fit and my wallet empty but repay me with so many smiles you can't buy. I could chat all day - you may have noticed - but one of said kids now needs me to go on an errand. Hope things pan out well for you all!

7:02 They need their social hierarchy when they thoroughly enjoy the game of dominating the others, obviously. Alone with their thoughts would torment them more than the average person. Can’t silence the conscience when alone, undistracted for long enough. That’s the punishment. No one to bully but themselves, and they’re damn good at it. Those who live more isolated lives, on the verge of being social outcasts, comfortably-can also have great thinking minds and have contributed much to the advancement of the entirety of mankind. (Think N.Tesla) Plenty of employment opportunities are very solo-oriented like long distance truckers, astronauts, farmers, etc with very little social interaction. Hermits used to be lucky 🍀 Social integration in environments where their social circles aren’t the best (over dramatic workplace dynamics, snooty church culture, poorly managed educational facilities, hostile environments, rough neighborhoods, etc) it isn’t integration if they’re present in the location physically, surrounded by people, yet rejected, ignored, tolerated, victimized or vilified. Constant rejection and alienation harms the psyche just as well as isolation.

Proclamation: The Wilderness Tabernacle is a picture of Heaven and Earth. Exodus 26:13 makes Pi Pi was first recorded by Moses in 1440 BC. Josephus the Historian's description of the Tabernacle in 94 AD was inaccurate. This was rediscovered in 2015 AD. 330 Exodus 26 :7 15 Exodus 26:9, 12 - 1 Exodus 26:13 makes Pi = 314 Exodus 26:7-9, 12-13 The Tabernacle had 11 curtains, each 30 cubits long. Therefore, all the curtains together were 11 x 30 = 330 cubits long. One of these 11 curtains was to be folded in half. Therefore, the adjusted length is 330 - 15 = 315 cubits. The same folded curtain is to have half a cubit of material hanging off at both ends of the Tabernacle. Since there are two ends, that adds up to 2 x 0.5 = 1 cubit. Therefore, the final adjusted length is 315 - 1 = 314 cubits. 3.14 = 314 circumference/100 diameter ≈ π ratio (100 cubit court per Exodus 27:9-18) Exodus 26:13 makes Pi

My thoughts on meaning (incoming essay): I feel like understanding reality in the context of a video game can be useful to some limited extent. In a video game you know (I would hope) what the purpose of the video game is, you will usually find out the bigger picture (or get told straight away) and discover the details of the game (more so as you play it). Given this, you can apply logic/etc/whatever to how YOU want to play the game. Obviously life is not exactly like a video game, there is (as far as I'm aware) no consciousness inside a video game, among many other dissimilarities. But real life is a bit like being thrown into a video game whereby you don't choose your character. Like all characters (I assume) you start off mostly ignorant. You don't choose the point in time/history you are in, etc, etc. You don't know the rules of the video game (laws of nature, etc), you don't KNOW the bigger picture (including whether the 'video game' has a creator or not, etc). You are (imo) both individually and collectively unlikely to 'figure out' the 'video game' of life during your/our life time. With the intergenerational transfer and development/recording of 'knowledge' hopefully our ignorance decreases over time. And so my point being, it's no wonder people struggle. Beliefs about this 'video game' that help us know how to orient our character within the video game (e.g. the bigger picture, the details, who our character is, etc, etc) are what enables us (imo) to have meaning, purpose, satisfaction, etc, in life. As I said, video games have no consciousness, reality is not a video game. Because consciousness exists (including suffering), morality is a real concept and something worth pursuing/holding on to. But my point is, looking at reality, to some extent, as like being thrown into a strange video game where we don't even know if it's a video game or not is imo conceptually helpful to benefiting people in life (regarding how to orient themselves, etc). I wish I had this view/mindset in my late teens/early 20s. I would have told myself to investigate reality, arrive at high level beliefs about the bigger picture (existential beliefs), the details (how reality works) and my character (who am I?), etc. Once I've established enough of these related beliefs I will (I think) find meaning, find purpose and begin to actually start my life. Note: this doesn't assume a one size fits all answer. Some will say the bigger picture is a particular kind of God and so that will affect how they interact with/view the 'video game' of life.'. Also. in my opinion, some aspect (perhaps a lot) of life are speculative and given the diversity of perspectives/points of view, variety of orientation would exist even without this level of speculation. Hope that all makes sense. Thanks for reading.

Good question. I enjoy being around people who cultivate a positive outlook, good hygiene, express gratitude, and show an interest in others. I don't enjoy being around people who cultivate complaining, blaming, who have deceptive agendas, are too aggressive or lack empathy (narcissist). That's just me. Maybe gathering honest feedback might be a good place to start. (Just remember to be kind to yourself and that change takes time.) Many people are afraid of honest feedback (normal) but it's a lot faster and accurate than obsessive self-analysis and mind-reading. I like to study people and read biographies of people I admire. I try to use them as a living template for developing 'likeable' (and other) chatactetistics. I do note though that JP points out in other presentations that if a person is "too likeable" they may be off putting and a red flag, as well. (Ie... "Clingers," con-persons, co-dependant, and perhaps candidates for abuse.) How about you? How do you define likeability?

JBP must be getting his suits from Don Cherry's tailor. In seriousness though, I grew up with a narcissistic parent. When the parent puts their emotional needs before the child, and belittles the child to boost their own fragile ego, the child learns to socially disconnect and suppress their own needs as a survival mechanism. So for a longest time I didn't believe I needed anyone, or was even good enough for anyone. People in these situations also tend to develop insecure attachment styles, which often results in the (unintentional) self-sabotage of intimate relationships. It's only in the last couple years I've come to understand why I do what I do, and even now in my late 30s, I still struggle with it. But once you know the mechanics of it, that's when you can start fixing it. I think one of the most insidious things about the modern world is it enables people with crappy lives to engage in pseudo-social connections. Whether it's mass media, social media, online activism, cancel culture, pr0n, online games, etc. It makes people feel like they have meaning and are part of a group, when they're really experiencing neither. Of course the mass atomization of society predates the internet. But I liken the situation today to Homer trying to jump Springfield Gorge. A slow jump followed by a sudden and hard fall, hitting every crag and outcrop on the way down. This is why online discourse has gotten so toxic beyond the mere trolls of years past. It's a big problem that nobody's really taking seriously. In fact governments and big corporations are making big profits off it. But with mental health problems reaching pandemic levels among Gen Z and Gen A, we do need a serious rethink of our society's relationships with technology and each other. You can't put the genie back in the bottle, but you can change what you wish for.

This s such bullshit - people have abusive families and they have to stay away - the workplace is usually toxic with bullies and sexual harrassment etc. and church is often just as toxic. You need a healthy relationship with a spouse and a healthy environment Not perfect but healthy.

Or maybe you have a terrible life BECAUSE you are depressed for the reason(s) that are causing the terrible life, e.g. feeling lost in life, not sure what to do with your life, struggling to cope with life, to understand life. It's not either or, they can be connected. I watched one video ages ago that said depression is basically, if I remember correctly, ''I give up'', trying in life but failing (at least perceptually) and giving up.

Well, yeah, but what if you have (or had) a partner committed to deceit and perfidy? What if your biggest flaws, your worst weaknesses are (were) 1) that you learned to tamp down your impulses to fight back, to suppress your desire to fight for the truth and your own well-being, because you were psychologically and physically battered as a child, and 2) it is (was) completely beyond your ability to imagine that someone would pursue (hotly and vigorously) a sexual relationship, a marriage and children, from an operating paradigm of deceit and perfidy, even admitting it when confronted about it? Try putting your sanity in order with those preconditions.

That sounds awful. I'm sorry if you went through all that. 😢 I think JP can only cover so much in a 10-minute clip. He does have much longer videos that address some of those serious issues. I also really like "Therapy in a Nutshell" and "The Crappy Childhood Fairy" for mental health/relationship help. I hope you find peace and don't give up. 💛🙏💛 You are worth it. There are answers out there. Please keep looking and searching. JP is an amazing resource, but no one person will have all the answers and tools needed. And often, those answers come one piece at a time. I wish you well and pray you find healing and hope in some of these suggestions. I'm sorry for the pain you've gone through. 💔

"As you think celestial, you will view trials and opposition in a new light. When someone you love attacks truth, think celestial, and don’t question your testimony. The Apostle Paul prophesied that “in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” There is no end to the adversary’s deceptions. Please be prepared. Never take counsel from those who do not believe. Seek guidance from voices you can trust-from prophets, seers, and revelators and from the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, who “will show unto you all things what ye should do.” Please do the spiritual work to increase your capacity to receive personal revelation." - Russell M Nelson, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
@Eforero83

This is a sidenote given the topic at hand, but its rather ironic that your quote is from a member of the Latter-Day Saints (i.e the Mormons). For in many Christian circles we don't see Mormons as Christians, but rather, as a large cult teaching false doctrines about Christ that are counter to what the Gospels in Scripture teaches. False doctrines such as God Himself having a wive--outside the Church being His bride; Jesus Christ and Satan being angels, and therefore brothers to each other; painting an afterlife picture where the Saints will rule over whole planets, with their multiple wives, etc, etc. It's sad, too, because I have personally met some Mormons in the (US) Army, and they were some of the kindness, smartest, humblest, and most gentlest and most loving, souls that I ever met in my life. So, I'm not saying all of this because I hate Mormons, on the contrary: I love them. I'm saying all of this because their teachings, their view of Christ (and God), is not one that is supported by what the Bible says, or indicates. Such false doctrines are wolves in sheep's clothing.

Mr Peterson, I understand that you are really well read and know a whole lot of words. I am way more impressed with a man who uses normal common language, and not near as many descriptive and refining words to convey a message. Your style convinces me that you get some thrill from seeming really intelligent and presenting yourself as some final authority. If you want common people to understand rather than just follow, please use smaller words and not near so many. who are you trying to impress??? Thank you
