Thank u for the video, made me want to try to fix my motor on a Yamaha TT400u, can't find a motor anywhere so after watching ur video I went ahead and took it apart after 2 jabs to the hand (no screws holding the bottom together) I got my Dremel out and cleaned the same area oiled the bottom put it back together (of course backwards) finally got it back in soldered hooked up and it worked. Thanks soo much.

Woohoo I tried my first motor disassembly and lube and put back together. My akai turntable from 1986 is running underspeed. Unfortunately now it’s going even slower! I guess these motors do wear out and it mine needs replaced? I’ve got a new belt w proper specs and made sure the spindle bushing was clean and re lubed.

Maybe my new belt got too stretched out because it was seemingly too tight when I got it from amazon. 😢

when buying a vintage TT will 90% of the motors need work soon? you kept mentioning if the motor is frozen when taking it apart and can't be fixed the TT isn't worth saving and trash the whole TT..... which new TT brand and model , fully automatic new one would you suggest and the stylus do you recommend. these 50 year old TT have too many parts that can't be fixed. and after a few months of constant repairs, you'll end up throwing it over a bridge.

Hi Jordan, just seen this video and its really useful. You mention that the motor cannot be replaced only serviced. For what reason is this a problem, is it that replacement motors cannot be sourced or for other reasons? I have a Technics SL-235 turntable but motor has stopped running. I think it is wasting

Hey Jordan, is that just standard sewing machine oil you used in the DC motor? I’ve seen a lot of people saying use sewing machine oil and a lot of others saying use synthetic electronic motor oil. Do you have a preference?

I just got a Sony 300 model belt drive. I put a record on that is for 33rpm got it running and it was playing way too fast. The device was on 33 as well. I tried calibrating the holes on back of the motor now it wont turn at all. If I give the brass spinner a thump it spins a little. If I press down on the brass motor spinner I can feel the motor turning and trying to spin the brass

Excellent video with great info. My brother has a Dual CS 450, brand new, that acts weird. The turntable bounces, sometimes at the start of a record, sometimes halfway through. I don't know if you are familiar with this model, (I don't think it's one of Dual's better models) but the platter sits on a smaller, plastic platter that drives the belt. The belt looks good, and the motor does wiggle a little. I'm stumped. Any suggestions?
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 8 жыл бұрын
I would try to remove the smaller platter, and clean and lubricate the shift bearing with machine oil. 3 in one works ok. If the bearing is dry or worn it can cause this symptom. Also check for anything that may have gotten under the platter causing intermittent obstruction
@gns423
@gns423 8 жыл бұрын
+Jordan Pier Thanks Jordan. It is now working great. The smaller platter had a shaft that went into a sort of oil cup. I used deoxit on the shaft and oil cup, and re-oiled it, and it's working fine.

Hey Jordan. Just replaced my belt for my table. There was no manual(or belt) so had to measure the belt myself. I measured around the path of the inside platter where the belt sits and got a length of 421mm. I ordered a new belt which was 393 mm in length as that was the closest one I found which is 7 percent smaller than the measured length. So I plug the record player in with new belt on and it's still playing slow. Could it be that the belt is just a tad bit small and there is too much tension and that's why it's slow and maybe I should order a few millimetres longer OR could it be the motor that needs an adjustment? Can't seem to locate the screw to adjust the speed of the motor
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 4 жыл бұрын
There should be 3-5% stretch to the motor pulley. There should be just enough tension to rotate the platter at the correct speed It's likely too tight. Typically sizes are about 23.6 - 25" for that drive mechanism. I would start large and work your way down Is your turntable a project/one like the one in the video, or different make and model?

@JordanPier
@JordanPier 9 жыл бұрын
Make sure the transport screws aren't still in the motor. If you can't wiggle the motor around on its grommets a little then they are still in. often they have a blue tint to them. Also if the motor suspension is made of rubber and has deteriorated a similar problem will occur. Also check to See that there is no junk on the pulley and that the motor pulley is straight

Jordan: it is obvious that you are a turntable guru. I have a project one dr-550 direct drive turntable. I cant get the speed to stay constant. adjusting speed makes strobe go all over the place. plus speed is slowing down and speeds up all by itself. Can you direct me on how to alleviate this problem?
@JordanPier

Dave Swisher get a can of caig deoxit d5 contact cleaner, take the bottom off the turntable and shoot some inside the speed control where the three leads purtrude. Work the speed controls back and forth about 20 times, button it back up and retest. On occasion the speed selector switch goes bad, but this is not often. I think after your clean the speed controls it will behave

Hey Jordan, My 30 yr old son is getting into vinyl, so I'm giving him my Denon DP-30L. Had it store in its box for many years. Motor works fine, but the tonearm is not dropping or lifting as it should. Any tips on how to lubricate and best oil for that purpose. ✌
@JordanPier
@JordanPier 4 жыл бұрын
Those servo arms weren't designed to be taken apart. I've found that trying to service them usually results in death of plastics and warpage of the drive coils that move the arm. You can try zeroing the arm while the turntable is unplugged. Adjust the counterweight until the arm just begins to float above the platter. Now plug in, set the tracking force dial to about 1.5 and the dampening to the same if it has it. Pray it works otherwise it's more or less a brick. Long term hibernation is a kiss of death for these.
