Nice video of the air conditioner. A fun fact about this air conditioner is that I believe that the manufacturer of this unit is different from the 10000 btu Frigidaire that you have in the garage. The temperature up and down buttons on this 25000 btu unit have a grey border around the arrows while the 10000 btu unit doesn’t have any grey borders around the temperature up and down buttons, just white. The control panels also have some different buttons. The side and top vents on the exterior of the 25000 btu unit have a more round shape than the 10000 btu one that has more of a squared side vent design seen on GE units not made by haier. They both also have different remote control designs. Also, the 10000 btu unit has R-410a while the 25000 btu unit has the r-32. These are just some things I would consider sharing.

I bought a previous version of that unit (was r410a) several years back when my central AC had a major failure. I set it on 60 degrees and it ran continuously for over four months no problem. It got temperature to 75 but with very low humidity thus very comfortable. It had a GMCC rotary compressor which had a buzzsaw sound that was slightly annoying. You need to mount the sleeve and insulate it well and block the air gaps with dense materials like two layers of wood with a layer of high density sound deadening in between. Not flimsy curtains or featherweight foam. That will keep that nasty compressor noise on the outside of the house.. By the way you can't compare the energy ratings of window ACs to central AC / heat pumps. The ratings are different. SEER vs. CEER vs. EER are all not the same.
@JordanU Жыл бұрын
The machine itself has no sound barrier from the noise outside, it's just a thin piece of Styrofoam. A blanket should have been put over the compressor if such a cheap noisy model was to be used. All those energy ratings are a joke anyways, they're nothing but a scam to try to sell more new units.

@@GannDolph That's not true, compressors are self-cooled by the returning refrigerant.
@GannDolph Жыл бұрын
@@JordanU that's true for scroll and recip compressors, whereby the suction gas flows around the motor windings prior to being compressed. In a rotary , the suction gas first enters the attached suction accumulator, where much of its cooling energy is lost. From there it goes straight into the rotary compression chamber(s) at the bottom. It does not flow through the shell or over the motor windings . Once compressed , the high pressure compressed gas fills up the entire shell and flows over the motor windings, then out the discharge line at the top. The motor in a rotary compressor is cooled by a combination of discharge gas (*NOT* return gas) and air over the shell. You will not find rotary compressors with sound blankets from the factory , nor will you find reputable makers of blankets marketing them for use on rotary compressors as opposed to reciprocating and scroll.
@JordanU Жыл бұрын
@@GannDolph The rotary compressors are cooled by the flow of the refrigerant. They are not air-over devices. They can be completely isolated from all airflow, as seen in the design of thousands of pieces of equipment, and maintain reasonable operating temperatures.

I think the Haier Serenity Series is the best option at this point. My testing has not been running for long enough for me to say how long it will last, but performance and noise level are excellent. I wouldn't be intimidated by the large quantity of brand names and models available today. There are only a small handful of actual manufacturers, I'd say less than 5, that make the things. You can find the same machine sold under 15 different brands. They're all poorly made, choose one at random or find the best sale. Even the most expensive and 'high end' units will be replaced within the decade. If you only need a small 5,000 BTU, get the most basic model with mechanical controls. The electronic controls are generally awful, the machine in the video lets the temperature of the room fluctuate by 7 degrees or more at times, which is the difference between being comfortable and uncomfortable.

While it eventually becomes hot after sitting in a hot metal case for a while, the water that is condensed on the cold evaporator coils is usually pretty cold… at least at first. This is where the dehumidification function of these type units takes place. In most systems, all of the cooling potential carried by that water is just wasted. You say some things that make me wonder if you don’t fully understand this part of the process… Passing the refrigerant through some copper tubing immersed in this water in addition to what the compressor and the condenser coils do should really help. I would really advise against disabling this part of the air conditioner… I have long wondered why that cold, basically distilled - water isn’t captured before it becomes contaminated and sprayed or misted onto the condenser coils in a little bit more sophisticated way than having the fan just splash some onto it.

Hey Jordan, I am so very glad to see that you are finally upgrading those old energy hogs you have to something modern and efficient! by doing this you are helping to save the environment, and putting harmful emissions in the rear view! Also Jordan, These new units use R-32 refrigerant, which is so very great as it has very little environmental impact! These are certainly great units, and I am sure it will work so very well for you! Not only do these modern units save the environment by not using harmful CFC refrigerants, they are also highly efficient, which helps the environment, but also saves you money! One thing though Jordan, I would not drill a hole in this! The unit is designed so that water builds up in the pan, and then a wheel on the condenser fan called a "slinger" helps to throw the cool water over the condenser coil, and the compressor! This helps it to run cooler, which helps it to preform better, run more efficiently, and last longer! If you drill holes all in it, the unit will run hotter and with higher head pressures, which will cause it to nor preform as well, run less efficiently, and fail in short order due to overheating!
