He made a bad signing, but there is no way he could've predicted Sanchez, Lukaku, or Pobga to be so weak or uninspiring. Lukaku looked great at Everton, Sanchez in Arsenal, and Pobga for France. He asked for new defenders and the board didn't back him. He really overachieved with United. 2 trophies in the 2 years he spent at United with a squad where Phil Jones makes the starting eleven is ridiculously good. Especially the Europa League. I'll be honest here. I've always backed Jose Mourinho when he was at United and was disappointed when he was sacked. I knew it wouldn't be a great decision. Of course at the time I was with the many fans that called for him to go as the results and the performances of the team were unbearable. As soon as I saw the news that he was sacked I immediately told my dad that it'd be a very bad decision. We are seeing this now. Jose was right about these players. They don't work hard enough and are not GOOD ENOUGH. Martial has been awful ever since he signed that 5 yr contract and doesn't work hard enough at all. The underlooked part of this speech is that Mourinho indirectly criticises Alex Ferguson for leaving a squad that didn't have a long-term perspective. He probably knew in 2013 that this was the right time to step down, as he saw that he couldn't rebuild the team the way he did in the mid-1990s or early-to-mid-2000s. I think he planned to retire already in the early Noughties, and from 2003 to 2006 United weren't performing as well as in the previous years. I dont understand why United are so adamant they are still in a transition phase and that the investment spent so far isn't enough. You have arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, a Right back in Antonio Valencia who most United fans would tell you is one of the best fullbacks in Europe, Eric Bailly a defender who cost £40m. Matic, who helped Chelsea to many titles and is one of the best holding players in the country. One of the best and most expensive midfielders in history in Paul Pogba. As well as a huge array of attacking talent that clearly Mourinho is not getting the best out of. Mata, Lingard, Alexis, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford. That forward line should be contributing 70/80 goals a season easily. Yet it is nowhere near. United are only probably short of true quality in maybe 2/3 positions max. City have played the whole season without a recongised left back and have still blown everybody away. Still managed to stay on top with just one recongised forward for much of the season. Mourinho is trying to make it sound like United are around the same place they've been for the last 5 years or so, but they were under 3 other managers, two of which got the sack because they weren't performing. Jose should be getting so much more out of Man United because in terms of the starting XI United and City really are not all that far apart. The difference right now mainly comes down to manager.

Sam Harrison Bailly has been out half the season. We have what seems like a different back four every single game as nobody can stay fit or claim a place. We have nobody capable of playing on the right of midfield, we have about 5 players that all want to play on the left in the same area of the pitch. Rashford and Martial are still young and inconsistent, one day great, the next anonymous. No depth at all in center midfield, if Pogba or Matic get injured we have nobody else of sufficient calibre. Up front I think we are well serviced but our issue is our midfield and defence can't link to get ball to our attackers. Our squad is totally unbalanced and full of average players that have failed under four managers now. Jose is slowly trying to get rid of the dross and bring in better players that he can trust and can perform for him.
