Back in the days their circus came to our town. Yes, they really live in a circus back in the days. Me and some other 10 year old friends came watching all of the excitement when one of their lama’s escaped. Since a couple of my friends were from a farming background it didn’t toke us long to capture and retrieve the animal. But instead of being grateful, Adriaan started yelling at us for touching his animal. No more Bassie and Adriaan for me nor my kid nowerdays. They are just a couple of @§§holes that happened to become famous. Nothing good to say for them. They where in it just for the money and never for the kids...

Oh yeah Theo and Thea were groundbreaking taboo crushing education. Way too progressive for most cultures. Sexism, ageism, and all sorts of inappropriate behaviors were on full display. But it made kids very aware of such behaviors while growing up. This was about exposing kids to all the bad stuff in the world without actually putting them in danger. And of course it was very entertaining at the same time. Politically very incorrect, the stuff The Netherlands used to be made of.

That show made me ask my mom a few questions she wasn't ready to answer yet. I remember that I was upstairs and my mom was in the garden, and I went to the window overseeing the garden and yelled "Mom, what's ejaculation?" and then I heard our neighbor lady laughing. Theo and Thea also addressed how babies were made but it made no sense to me at the time. They said "babies are made when the men's seed gets together with the woman's egg" and then showed them stirring some sunflower seeds into a chicken egg in a cup.

Definitely have to show him "Theo&Thea" episodes. It was the show that parents would be even more in a stupor about than the kids, but fun for both. You can also find them on youtube with subtitles. There was a period in time that Dutch TV actually was really good and not so commercialised as these days.

"Lust jij ook een broodje poep?" Wanneer mijn broer jarig was, of wanneer het kerst was en ik vroeg aan hem: "wat wil je voor je verjaardag?" Dan was altijd het antwoord van hem: "Een broodje poep". Dus een dag voor kerstmis avond, ging ik buiten op jacht naar een flinke honden drol, dat was niet zo moelijk aangezien mensen de poep van hun honden vaak niet opruimen. Toen had ik een mooie keutel gevonden, mee naar huis genomen, een broodje/bolletje opengesneden en daar die keutel tussen gedaan, verpakt in plastic en daarna verpakt in cadeau papier. Nou, de volgende dag opende mijn broer dat cadeautje. Sindsdien had hij nooit meer dat flauwe grapje gemaakt. Goeie oude tijden.

My favourite Bassie and Adriaan episodes were the ones where Bassie wins a USA roadtrip on a TV show and they made eggs on the hood of the car in Death Valley. I took that roadtrip too and even stayed at the same Death Valley hotel that you can see Bassie and Adriaan driving past. Goals, tbh.

The Film of uncle Willem was my favorite show when I was litlle. Do you like a sandwich of poop? And everybody said nooow!!! The older musician then says: O! Uncle Willem! You can't say that, it's disgusting! And then Uncle Willem punished himself with beating his drumsticks on his head. One of the great lessons about what was good and wrong. This always was the intro. But in the programm a lot of moral lessons were showed, like don't lie etc. Great show I grew up with.

De Zevensprong dan en Q en Q, man ik zat daarvoor vroeger aan het beeld gekluisterd. Ik was echt bang van de rol van Joost Prinsen als kind door zijn rol in de Zevensprong en hoe ik hem herinnerde als een boom van een vent, Jaren later kwam ik hem in het echt op mijn werk tegen als Gastdocent op de Hoge School voor de Kunsten in A'dam, en jeetje hoe een kinderangst plots in duigen kan vallen, wat was het een klein teer mannetje :-D Toen ik hem dat vertelde lag hij dubbel van het lachen, dat veel mensen uit die tijd hetzelfde hadden als ik over de Zevensprong :D

De walrus uit Pingu was eng. En de aflevering van Madelief waarin ze in tweeen gezaagd werdt en iedereen haar uitlachte. Man, nog steeds nachtmerries. Madelief was supercreatief en echt..zo fucked up soms. Kinderen die doodbloeden, hun hoofd eraf draaien in de wasmachine. Het zou tegenwoordig beter passen bij een thriller.

The thing about "Film van Ome Willem" is that it is old (started in 1974) and for long it was one of the only shows where kids were allowed to say naughty thigns like " Lust je ook een broodje poep" And Uncle Willem was eacht tieme repremanded by one of his band members. But the show it self was also one of the fist shows on Dutch tv talking about subjects that then were more or less taboo, like Being in love as a kid, beign naked and your body, adn If iremember correctly, death has also been a subject. I do think It was an essential program for childrens' tv in the Netherlands
