Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the title role of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden in director Oliver Stone’s new biodrama “Snowden.” He admits to complex feelings about the role, saying, “It’s not a simple story” and agreeing with Snowden that, “mass surveillance is a conversation we should be having.”

I don't understand why people, especially well known people always say that we are a democracy... When we aren't.

people outside your country actually have quite a different perspective on your understanding of democracy

I would like to think that people would know the definition of Democracy and Republic, instead of basing the words from their opinion/perspective because that gives a false representation of their correct meaning.

"Republic" doesn't really have a well formed, specific definition. It just comes from the Latin "res publica," which means "thing of the public." The American form of republic is a liberal representative democracy, i.e. it has a constitution that protects the rights of individuals, and legislation is carried out by representatives elected democratically. That's what we Americans mean when we say "republic," but our republic is just a specific form of democracy, opposed to the direct democracy of ancient Athens, which the founders rightly thought to be prone to demagoguery and descent into tyranny. The latter point is why the constitution and separation of powers was so emphasized.

Well, we do have a Constitution, but Snowden and others signed documents to guard classified data. The documents didn't say, only guard the important stuff, or watch out for shady things that might be sneaky. The guy needs to be in prison or shot in the eye. I know everyone wants to give thieves their own book deals or rap albums these days, but you won't be celebrating with Russia breaks thru our security because of this asshole. Surrender you say? Yeah, that's what I expected.

hugo poyoyo Because he took a pocket full of secrets to Russia instead of keeping it in house. That is the definition of a spy. He is a globalist, just like Greenpeace and those assholes that try to ram ships to save whales. He is doing his crimes in a global way just like wiki-leaks.

Snowden did the right thing. The fact that the American government did not want him back shows just how dirty their hands are. It proves Snowden's point.

This is very simple to me, nothing complicated. Snowden is a hero, period. It's easy to see the intention behind his actions come from love and genuine concern for all of us. He had the balls to do what he did, which takes a lot of courage. Snowden was making a nice salary, yet he was driven by his values. It's people like him who make a positive impact on this world.

I love him so much. I think he's becoming a great actor and a very good person. He is right; the best actors are the ones who can change themselves completely into their character.

Well I'm not a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan, but I'm very much eager to watch this movie. Although Edward Snowden doesn't want the issue or the media focus on him; just on the issue of mass surveillance and privacy and that's it,...I still thank him very much for what he exposed & warned the entire globe about. If it was still up to The NSA, The CIA and the FBI, all this information would still be classified for really stupid, ridiculous reasons.

Gordon Levitt could have spoken out more to highlight the issue rather than the movie. The opportuinity he had (which he was given), he pressed very lightly.

Wow, it was weird how they kind of just disregarded the Rosa Parks comparison. I get that they have limited time and had to continue the interview, but it still kind of hurt. lol

I think the difference between Rosa Parks and Edward Snowden is the law she broke is wrong in and of itself. The law Snowden broke stood in the way of important information in 1 instance but it is not inherently wrong. NSA employees publishing classified documents b/c their politics say to SHOULD be illegal. Her crime could be forgiven by the voiding of the law she broke but that's not the case w/ Snowden, even if you appreciate the results of his actions.
@laurindaloi2860
@laurindaloi2860 8 жыл бұрын
his politics weren't the reason he published the documents (first of all he didn't publish any documents, he gave them to a news source and asked them to decide what to publish based on the journalistic criteria of public interest), he broke the law bc he knew his bosses and organization to be breaking the law with no recourse. he leaked classified info but when evidence of wrongdoing is categorically being marked classified information and infringes constitutional rights (in this case the 1st and 4th amendment), then the law is flawed even if it isn't 'inherently' wrong. when cigarette company whistleblowers came out, they broke the law of employment non-disclosure which is good to keep companies safe from their competitors. but those employees should not go to jail for telling the public that their company was lying to the govt about the health safety of smoking just bc the law the law itself isn't inherently wrong. laws can be flawed despite not being completely wrong bc they are being used beyond their scope or not within the spirit of the law.
