Franz was dead by the time Josepha caught smallpox. Josepha was sad about her father in law passing away since he was basically the only one who would stand up for her, talked to her, and treated her with respect.

I love their argument because both are right : Francis is right to speak up for Josepha, just like Joseph is right to call his father out on his cheating.

smallpox in Maria Theresia's family: - 1761 second son Charles, 15 years, died. Not mentioned in this series, was believed to be the most favoured son of his parents; - 1762 daughter Johanna Gabriela, 12 years, died; - 1763 daughter in law Isabella of Parma, died; - 1767 daughter in law Maria Josepha of Bavaria, died; - 1767 daughter Josepha, 16 years, died; - 1767 Maria Theresia herself, survived; - 1767 daughter Maria Elisabeth (Lieserl), survived, but defaced with scars, not longer marrigeable, later abbess at Innsbruck. emperor Franz Stephan died 1765, August 18th, at Innsbruck by a heart attack

A very powerful but sadly, fictional scene. The father Francis died in August 1765. The 2nd wife Maria Josepha died in May 1767. Francis was very kind to his daughter in law and his death was as hard on her as his own children. Perhaps the other person talking to Joseph could have been Leopold but that would also be fiction as he was already in Tuscany. Adjust the script and it could have been his mother Maria Theresa. The setting of a royal chapel was very effective though. Thank you to the contributer who listed all the family smallpox deaths so accurately. Archduke Charles, the one who died in 1761 (and should definitely have been included in this series) is another what if of history had he lived, the same as Joseph's 1st wife Isabella and his sisters Joanna and Josepha.

Franz should have been dead by the time Josepha caught smallpox. I know historical dramas don't have to stick to real history exactly, but there shouldn't be such obvious inaccuracies.

"But God has punished me, not you." - Gurl one of his daughters is also ill (and - spoilers - will die soon) what are you talking about. Like this scene is generally good, but the show just cannot help itself, it is still completely unserious.

My thinking was that he was talking about catching syphilis, the "punishment for visiting brothels". That he meant that he, Joseph, caught syphilis because he visited brothels sometimes, and Francis lived a whole life frequenting brothels constantly and never catching it. Of course that is still nonsense historically, because Joseph never had syphilis 😅

@@tereziamarkova2822 Yeah, this is exactly the scene why I think he was not lying to his mother when he said he had syphilis. And also because in that scene, Maria T's own doctor, Van Swieten, confirms Joseph's claim to Maria T. So I think that the series meant that he indeed catches syphilis. Which is nonsense, given that his health will not deteriorate in the upcoming series time, but whatever 😅
