In my mid 20's some friends and I built a small cabin in the several thousand acre woods behind our houses, quiet and room for 4 cots inside. I spent an entire summer living out there, it was fantastic. (early 80's). Now I am 62 and long for those days, keep doing what you love.

Doubt I will ever go out in the big woods alone but my little cabin is in a wooded area on a small lake shore. Joe, I'm not sure if your butcher shops carry it, but for bringing meat that does not need refrigeration (or Geiger counters) beef biltung is a great option. It's an air dried brisket, and you cut off what you need. More tender than jerkey, it rehydrated very well if you make a soup or stew, and strips can be cooked like bacon, or just cut off a bite as a snack. I believe it is originally a traditional way to cure and preserve meat in Africa. Something to keep an eye out for, or ask the butcher next time you are at a meat emporium.

RK7 , here too, but there are some pretty basic butcher shops that are not going to have this sort of thing, and then there are amazing butcher shops that have stuff you may never have even heard of; hence "Meat Emporium". It's just a bit of fun. Like some liquor stores (L.C.B.O. = Liquor Control Board of Ontario, though I prefer Legendary Canadian Booze Outfitters) in Ontario Canada can be pretty sparse, where as others are exceptional.

Guys, if you live in a hot dry environment, you can make it yourself. We used silverside steak, you spice it for a couple days in basic spices and vinegar, this draws the water out the meat, then you slice it and hang it somewhere clean with a fan blowing on it until it dry, we usually prefer it to still be a little soft and "raw" in the center. If you live in a humid environment, you can buy or make your own drying boxes.
