Just realized this was the first video of Joe’s that I ever watched while searching for videos of the GB outdoor axe. Here I am a few months later (after watching a good portion of Joe’s videos) planning my first solo primitive camping trip. Thanks for the inspiration Joe!

Hey, Joe. I bought this axe recently, it's a fine tool and a pleasure to use. So light! Here's a tip: Attach the axe to your belt by the sheath strap as shown in the Axe Book that comes with every GB axe, then slide the end of the handle into the axe pocket on your Fjallraven's . The axe is held securely, doesn't flop around and moves with your leg, it's really comfortable, give it a try - I swear this is how that little pocket was intended to be used! Love your videos

It is absolutely worth every penny! I carry mine since 2014 and it's the only axe I use. I made a whole lean to shelter using only the outdoor axe. Lars Fält definitely knows what it takes to desing an axe.

I have that axe. I love it, especially for its hawk utility, but it dos have significant limitations. Firstly, it is very light, The head is only one pound and greater energy is therefore required from the user to make the strikes effective. Secondly, the striking surface is very small (only 2.5 inches), which requires a higher degree of user mental concentration for accurate strike placement (both for effectiveness and safety). This point is an important consideration especially when the user is tired, such as in a survival situation. Thirdly, it is short and while shortness is not in itself necessarily a limitation, in this case it is a serious limitation, given the small striking surface and greater risk of applying an inaccurate strike. The risk of injuring one's self with this axe is, I would argue, greater than most axes. For a short implement, for my money, a Gurkha khukuri cannot be beaten. The fact is that even given it's short length, the khukuri is heavy enough to apply a far more substantial blow than the little GB outdoor axe (and with less required effort). The striking surface is also long enough that accuracy (especially for safety) is not as great an issue (albeit you'd want to apply the strike on the belly of the blade, not the other parts of the edge, the other parts will still be there for you if you miss with the intended part of the blade). And the blade parts can be sharpened diffently for different uses (the tip being used for fine work, etc.). I have used both, side-by-side, on many occasions and have to say that the khukuri came out on top ever time. Lastly, you can get a really decent khukuri for less than half the price you'd pay for the GB axe. I like that little axe, but it has been relegated to just another tool, versus my go-to bush tool. My khukuri is over 25 years old and has never let me down. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn_Hm2h5nM1_Z7c

bustin nuts For axes, you simply cannot get any better than Swedish these days. I was a fireman for many years and I used to carry the smallest Gransfors bruks in a ring on my Boston leather truck belt. Got laughed at a lot by firemen from bigger departments on mutual aid calls. But as soon as I had to chop a hole in a roof with it, nobody was laughing... Except maybe me. Because I'd be done making my cuts before they even got halfway through. Not to mention they'd be hauling big heavy full size fireman's axes up ladders, when I had a small feather light one hanging from my belt leaving a hand free for additional tools. Being a fireman, the Gransfors bruks got beat up constantly, run over by a couple trucks, fell off roofs, and once fell through a hole into a burning house, only to be retrieved hours later after the fire was put out. Handle was a little charred but otherwise good as new. Unbelievable product.
