So I'm going to be a massive wimp and ruin 30% of the video by qualifying everything I say. 1) This is satire. 2) That controversial Cuphead video was created by someone who doesn't usually review games--although he has in the past, from what I understand he's usually a journalist. 3) Video game journalists can create great content without playing games at all. 4) Game reviewers *do* need to be skilled enough to understand games in order to speak about them. 5) I'm being a bit of a prick in the video but it's an extreme case of satire for a reason. I think it's alarming that this is even up for debate--whether reviewers should know how to play games. 6) Nothing about this is political for me. 7) I probably won't ever do a video like this again outside of some April Fool's stuff. This took me a day to make. It's low effort. Don't expect more like this (I'm sure you won't want it). Thanks!

Hello, Mr. Anderson. I worked on Cuphead, and I'd like to discuss some of your points. The jump height was indeed randomised. Good eye catching that. We saw how simple games like Mario were, where you always jumped at the same height, and decided it would be better if our game was more challenging to players than classic platformers. I'm glad to see we succeeded. We actually never considered jumping and shooting as a way to get past the second obstacle. I wish I had've discovered your video sooner, as we'd be able to fix this bug. However, my time in the gaming industry has taught me that if you don't fix a bug early on, you never fix it. Guess that's staying in. The boss fight was actually the most challenging part of the game to program. We initially intended for five pink lights. However, after some discussion (and a bomb threat that thankfully didn't come to pass), we eventually dropped it down to three. The lights were supposed to move automatically, as well, but unfortunately, time restraints made it impossible to implement this feature. I wish I could tell you something about the lore, but unfortunately, I wasn't on the writing team. I think you're right about the easter egg, but who knows what those guys were smoking? As for that "overworld," I think someone might have hacked your copy of the game. I assure you, that was never part of the original game. I think...

Very insightful. I was hesitant to pick up the game myself, but knowing a fellow gamer was able to conquer the tutorial in less than 8 hours gave me the needed confidence to persevere. The sheer audacity the developers at Team Meat have to put such a gauntlet immediately in your path was paralyzing. I know they were going for a Dark-Soulsy/Mario esque vibe, but a little hand holding wouldn't have hurt. The first platform puzzle should slowly lower itself the more attempts are made to clear it, they can't expect everyone to solve it the same way.
@TheUltimateHum7 жыл бұрын
I can very easily understand why you'd find the tutorial/game interesting. As an aspiring game journalist, I really think that you should've talked more about the art of Cuphead some more and not just the gameplay. As we all know, videogames are best known for their artistic expression and not their ability to be experienced through interactivity. The attract screen starts off with showing you the 1930s cartoon-style animation seen in trailer footage, but as soon as you hit Start (god it responds SO FAST) the entire game takes on a dark, mysterious tone. The title screen is mute and minimalist, showing an empty cup in a realistic artstyle, going completely against the grain of what it advertised. Proceeding through the menu shows you an old notepad with nary a doodle on it. The bottom reads, "(C) 1930, MDHR, INC., Selection"... What it means still has yet to be uncovered. Then, you actually get to the gameplay, and although the characters are still the same, all that they travel through is what must be a terrifying void for them. No floors, no background - just an empty canvas. Obstacles are merely basic 3D shapes, like rectangular prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and the occasional circle. Yet these 3D shapes are imprinted onto a 2D canvas - so what do the characters themselves see? How do they even see? What is sight like for a 2-dimensional being? Do they understand the third dimension? Perhaps the fact that these geometrical shapes are obstacles is the greatest hint towards unraveling Cuphead's mysteries. The boss fight in particular, I think, is most malicious - it breaks the rest of the game by utilizing a color that has yet to be seen elsewhere in the game, which makes it all the more jarring and memorable. If it weren't for the bait-and-switch trailer promising mindless action gameplay (a truly niche audience, really) then we might never have gotten such a thought-provoking experience. Also, if you could send me Braided Mares, that would be great. Been looking for that one for ages.

the Dark Souls of 2D Platformers is called "Salt and Sanctuary". I wish I were kidding. It's on steam. Pick it up for some fun Dark Souls action. In a 2D platformer.

"Like all gnomes, it defies convention and ends up as a maniacal art piece." And so, inevitably, the mask slips. Tell us, Mr Anderson, how long have you been dreaming of gnomes?

Your content and writing/reviewing skills are amazing. There are only few that can deliver the experience through a video and you do it well. Thank you and I love your videos now. Because of you i got Hollow Knight and i spent the entire day playing and i couldn't put my controller down. When i told my self enough is enough, i did launch the game and played once more, seeing how countless hours just flew by. Thanks man.

Joseph this is fucking amazing! Your delivery is so good I didn't realize it was satire at first.

High quality shitpost. Just hope people got the reference because the journalist was literally worst than Joseph Anderson being as awful as he possibly could be. To be fair though Joseph Anderson is like the only person I know who did the last arena on Hollow Knight and yet want the game to be even harder, must had been painful for him to even prevent he was that awful for that long.

Just bought the PRIMA guide, apparently you have to jump on the box, then jump again, then dash, but you have to dash, get this, IN THE AIR. How in the he'll i'm I supposed to know that? They should put a mircotransaction button so you can pay to avoid this? Other than that the game is great. You can see how much insperation it pulls from the last of us, Mass Effect, spec ops: the line, Fallout, half life, Metal Gear Solid, GTA, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, Crysis, Red Dead Redemption, Killzone, and Uncharted in that you shoot stuff, and that's a feature worthy of praise on the part of the developer. Ultimately the game is 10 out of 10, would bang.

I immediately got so confused when I heard you said that Team Cherry made it, and then even more when you said Team Meat. I ruined it for myself by looking at the comments, because if I had watched 30 seconds more I would have figured it out.

Acting like a shitty IGN reviewer while also parodying himself is killing me lol "you cannot proceed without doing this" "I want to stop and focus on the shooting here." Idk his fans can see it, it's hard to explain 😅
