I agree with you so much about aperture control in live view. When I decided to get a DSLR that would do video, I ended up switching back to Nikon from Canon. I bought a D7000. I was disappointed to not have aperture control when shooting video, ended up buying old manual focus lenses with an aperture ring. I also wasn't happy with the grip shape. We should have had the D7100/D610 type grip on the D7000. I really do prefer the Canon grip in some ways, kind of why I went to them from Nikon back in the film days. I've been watching a lot of your videos and recently had the chance to compare the D610 and D750 side by side. Have to say, the D750 is calling my name. I am heading back to the Philippines for three weeks in June, and I am getting one. They finally got everything right for me. I was tempted by the D5500, but the aperture control in live view really is a wonderful feature to have. I saw your video from Disney down here where I live, where you mentioned the Rokinon lenses. I really thought those were going to be my only option for changing aperture while shooting video and not being able to hear the clicks. Especially here in Florida at Epcot and the other parks--where it is so bright and sunny all the time--I would rather be able to change the aperture than to mess with the ISO settings. If I could stop down for sharpness and more depth of field in the sun and then open up the aperture to capture something in the shadows or on a covered stage, I would rather do that than have to boost ISO and get more noise.

Nice thorough review. Went with a D5300 over this because, well, refurbed I got mine for $380 (body only). Big fan of the D5XX Nikons, mainly because they push down the most features from their higher end models than competitors, the Nikon "lens" ecosystem, and they (again, imo) have the best sensors. On the video thing, I downloaded flat picture profiles for video via the picture control feature along with several film curve emulations. I haven't used it and don't shoot much video but wouldn't that render your main reason for upgrading past or from the 5300 moot unless you want touch screen (which is admittedly nice)?

I'm upgrading from a nikon D40 I've had for around 10 years. I've been looking at tests and reviews for months trying to decide what is the best choice for me. Now I think it's gong to be either the D5300, D5500 or the D7100. Leaning towards the D5xxx's right now because of their smaller size and weight compared to the D7100. I'm gong to visit my camera store to get a feel for the different cameras. I'm guessing image quality out of these three is gong to be mostly the same' so it's down to how they feel in the hand. Thanks for doing the review :-) .

I'm looking for some advice on which DSLR I should get. My budget for the body is around $1000. I am a mountaineer therefore the camera will mainly be used for landscapes. The camera being lightweight and portable is a big plus; along with wi-fi capabilities. I am starting up KZbin Chanel on outdoor lifestyle and outdoor gear reviews. Therefore, the DSLR must have good video capabilities. Which camera do you recommend for me? The Nikon D5500 has caught my eye.

@CraigMansfield8 жыл бұрын
Kyle Lucherini get one with a weather seal. I think the 7000/7100. It's all plus and minus with cameras. Video length is about 10 minutes before it overheats (full hd 50/60fps). Go to a camera compare website and find cameras that have the features you need, and read reviews. Also read what other people use for your purposes. Weather seal would be my top requirement though. Maybe articulated screen. Battery life.

Not long ago bought the Nikon D5500 as my first DSLR. And for street photography it is good when walking around London
@ballXmusicXlaughter8 жыл бұрын
which lense is good for the 5500 for street photography?
@autofocusrossswansea93628 жыл бұрын
We are all different in our approach to street photography. Many times you'll find the light is a problem, moving around a city, you are in shade, in sun, in shade again etc. For that reason, unless you hike your ISO you'll want to use a prime lens. You will find that prime lenses are smaller than zooms of similar focal length, so the camera is not 'quite' as intimidating to your subjects. This means you can be more discrete and get shots without attracting too much attention. It comes down to 2 lenses. First, the 35mm, if you don't mind getting up close and personal too much, as it has a 'normal' angle of view, like your eye at 45 degrees. If you prefer more distance, the 50mm comes in useful, and you can shoot from about x1,7 the distance of a 35mm for the same shot*. There is also the 85mm which allows you to shoot from even further away, approx x2.5 compared to the 35mm. Again, for the same shot*. So you could, depending on style, go for a 35 & 50, or a 50 & 85. The 18-140mm kit zoom is quite good, apart from distortion, which is very easy to correct, and in street photography, sometimes adds interest to a flat photo anyway. Whatever you get, make sure it is not an AF-D lens as these will not autofocus on D3000 and D5000 series cameras. You must get the AF-S versions, as they have focus motors built into the actual lens. *when we say same shot, say, 35mm vs 50mm from further away, be aware of the compression effect of increasing focal length. If a person is standing in front of other people, a few feet away, the 35mm gives the correct perspective of the distance between subject and background. 50mm pulls the background closer, 85mm closer still. At least with a prime (all of these are available in f1.8) when used wide open, you not only gain shutter speed, but also, you de-focus the background as the depth of field is quite narrow at f1.8, so you do have to watch where you focus, to avoid losing your subject in blur. With people, usual advice is to focus on the eye nearest the camera. With objects, the part of the object closest to the camera. The zoom lens is good if you don't mind upping the ISO and being more conspicuous. It is all a matter of what style of shooting you are comfortable with. You can be less visible with a prime lens, but if you are making it obvious you are shooting, the advantage is lessened, and if you involve people you are shooting, then maybe the zoom is the answer. So you can see, there is no obvious choice, it comes down to what you find you like doing with the camera, and your style. At least with the D5500 you have the pixels to crop out subjects hastily composed to get a better result.

Eaze54 Images above iso 6400 will be a little bit less noisy on d5500, but not by far. They tweaked the algorithm for processing photos on D5500, hence the difference. But D5300 also has good high iso performance.

@espresso4eva9 жыл бұрын
***** Actually, you can change it, just not real time (hence not good for video). But for photos, it works quite well! You need to disable manual movie settings, and you will have the ability to dial the aperture in manual mode. The aperture will change when you take the picture. So no need to get out of live view to change it.
