Starting with in-hand basics, like jogging and yeilding the hind quarters and building into finding the initial half steps, joseph talks his way though his system for teaching horses the piaffe in-hand. By breaking the horsemanship down into the most basic components, Joseph establishes true acceptance to the aids. Then using a "set it up and let them find it" approach the horse can seek the halfsteps out of understanding rather than fear and tension. For more videos please subscribe and click the bell.

Love this in-hand work that translates into an under saddle understanding of what is being asked of the horse. Thank you Joseph for putting videos like this out there to help riders. I have a passion for partnering with my horses, but I have limited access to a quality trainer. I truly appreciate the beauty you put into producing your videos and the quality of the teaching and information.

I love your comment about the use of the inside rein. In a lot of traditional western groundwork in reality I guess you could say that it is flexion rather then bending and flexion is the precursor to bending as perhaps flexion is the precursor to a horse moving off the inside leg. As you said using the inside rein to properly position the horse in essence to move off the inside leg and then the icing on the top is the outside rein. Properly schooled horses in both English and Western riding have reached the stage of responding properly to the outside rein. I think the main difference is that the concept of contact in English riding is a more nuanced continuous conversation, especially coming from the horses mouth back to the riders hands.... whereas in Western riding since the horses ridden with no contact there is a middle ground in which it is not having a conversation back-and-forth with the rider but at the end of the day it’s still always about inside leg to outside rein.
