Fresh off being one of the worst teams in the NBA during the 2020-21 season, Sam Presti and the Oklahoma City Thunder are still slowly attacking their rebuild. In doing so, they've assembled a group of unusual yet talented players-but do these odd pieces add up to anything worthwhile? In this video, J. Kyle Mann takes a look at their roster while focusing on the dynamic between fourth-year point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey, the deft passing rookie from Australia.

I mean you totally nailed it. OKC content in the national media is... rare to say the least, and even when it arrives it usually seems like that person watched a few highlights and called it a day. Fun to see someone put a lot of the thoughts I've had here and there into a single cohesive spot. Really hope Giddey can become a respectable shooter, seems like the key to unlocking him from a good starter to All-Star potential.

We need a Center who can stretch the floor and rebound (which JRE could be eventually, if he can make more inside shots), and a lights out shooter off the bench (which Tre Mann could be eventually, if his shot gets more consistent). Both these problems could have been fixed in this draft, well just have to see….

@@duffal0 You're going to have a very young core for a very long time (as long as presti keeps them damn picks), OKC should focus on the development of their young prospects such as Shai, Giddey, and Mann. Obviously trades are in the cards but if I were them I wouldn't trade anyone but Poku. You need to get Poku's trade value. I’d like to think the blue print for them playing as a duo is Harden/CP3 in Houston. Shai is the Harden as a high usage isolation scorer who draws double teams and can hit shooters because of how downhill he is and his ability to penetrate defenses. Giddey would be the oversized CP3 who can come in during staggered lineups with Shai and play a more traditional point guard role going around watering plants and feeding guys good looks. Especially in the pick and roll game. Like Kyles said it will come down to Giddeys shot and how much he can be an effective scorer. He has a nice floater but his overall shot definitely needs work, but at least he has the overwhelming confidence to keep shooting and not get down on himself like many young players do when their shot isn’t falling (looking at you Ben Simmons). Also Kyle I think Tre Mann and some Ty Jerome will end up providing more of those self created 3s that you were talking about OKC lacking.

I think the key for giddey is the jumper, I don’t think he’ll ever be a volume scorer in the paint, he lacks the physicality for it. I know it seems ridiculous but it's there...besides the physical stuff it's the IQ...he's only young but you'd have to be a spud not to see that his anticipation and positioning is advanced...how far he goes depends on his shot...being able to bomb 3's at a decent clip is key to opening the floor for the entire team...unlike Simmons Giddey will work to better that aspect of his game...50% as good as Bird is a borderline all star...he's a good kid so I hope he gets there...

The funkiness is the attraction. I think a lot of us are tired of just watching guys stand around hoisting up one 3-ball after another. I hope the Thunder turn out to be a modern version of the Spurs ball movement scheme - death by a thousand cuts. I'm holding out hope for Poku. He had no pro basketball experience before coming to the NBA last year and proved in the second half of the season that he could actually play.

Excellent video by Mann, with some really interesting takeaways. Beyond the unique skillsets of Shai and Giddey I think some of the stats and choices Presti has made demonstrate a real philosophical pillar where he thinks the league is going and believing in more committee basketball. If the league is getting more talented especially shotmaking, the ability for multifarious shot creation might be the trump card. It seems a team resembling the 13 14 spurs are really kindred to his thinking. And that overlaps with the stats laid out. Yes league leading off the catch 3s attempts is in part a byproduct of a roster without initiators but it also is one that supports a flowing hockey assist dependent identity. Those skills will be beneficial with possible stars from the lottery, but maybe they get good enough simply getting better shots and winning with five in due time. 5 Boris Diaw's just spitting the rock around is a very fun hypothetical. Lastly I really like that distinction in playmaking. It's something I have been really fascinated in over the last couple of years which is the nuance of single action passers to as you say players able to create in between scoring entities. I do think the league is starting to see signs or the massive benefit of having the latter. Or at least that those two ways in assisting operate very differently.

Still cant believe they let Moses Brown go and traded Sengun on draft night. Brown was practically playing for free and Sengun would have been ideal for this young, mostly oversees team they're building.

They didn’t male the sengun pick then trade him. Sengun was drafted by the rockets. They traded the pick before it got that pick, before it was made. And Moses brown LMAO. he wouldn’t be playing here he has no future anywhere, hence why he was already trade from Boston who we traded him to, and now he has played on only 6 games for the macs, healthy the whole season, for less than 3 minutes per game average lol. JRE would be getting the PT like he should be and okc management made a great movie getting something for a guy they knew had no place in their rebuild. Your comment is awful haha

I think Lu Dort isn't getting enough credit here, or anywhere for that matter. He's got that Rodman-esque hustle to make a difference on the defensive side and has improved immensely from his rookie season. If he keeps up that drive to make himself better he's got a ton of potential for someone who went undrafted.

His defensive stats have actually been markedly worse this year compared to last year because he's trying to be more offensively minded. Both his regular defensive stats and his advanced defensive stats have taken a significant hit

I agee that Lu Dort didn't receive enough credit in the video. He's improved greatly his ability to score evidenced by his recent several games where he scored 20+, and also I beleve had a couple 30+ games. This added to his ability as a defender makes him a much better rounded player and at a very young age as well.

@@colinmichael7820 Technically anybody can, but you're missing the point. He actually has a pretty great chance of doing so. Even this early he's a clear top 5 rookie (probably higher), with so much more room to grow.

@@zkillschool I really liked Giddey coming out but he won’t be the best player in this class or top 3. Could definitely be top 5 but he won’t be better than Mobley, Cade and Barnes at the least. I’d assume Green as well but Houston is currently setting him up to fail. That’s gotta change ASAP. Regardless, Giddey should be a solid player and very fun to watch going forward. I hope he balls out because OKC deserves to see a competitive team finally.

The thing with poku to me is yes he looks lost on defense a lot I will admit it he looks more lost this year than he did last year I’d say, but how he can almost fit seamlessly into the offense at his young age is really intriguing to me personally. Yes he still has his poku moments but he’s cut down on alot of those bone head plays that we saw last year and has picked up on some better habits like smarter shooting, less hero ball, smarter passes, and better off ball movement. If his shots start falling at a better clip it should open up a whole part of his game that I think we’ll see more of in his passing and vision. He definitely needs to work on his defensive footing and just where to be on that side but I really think the offensive upside is there. Not to mention I think he fits the offense so much better than baze does
