Josh Giddey was hyped up as a core member of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s future coming into this year, alongside bona-fide star talents like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams - but he just doesn’t belong in those conversations. In fact, he's bad. Players with his core limitations don’t succeed in the NBA - here’s why.

He's had two great seasons, and then one bad season in the midst of the off court drama. He fixes his 3 point shot and EVERYTHING opens up for OKC including his insane passing. Kid is 21. I think he proves everyone wrong in a year or two. Everyone wanted Dort traded last year and that was as shortsighted as this 'analysis'.

Well, it certainly has so far. In 12 games during march, 39% from 3, 54% from the floor, and a TS% of 60, which is the second best of the OKC starting 5 (behind dort). and in the top 25% of all 10 PPG scorers in the NBA for the month. You could easily argue he was the best player OKC had tonight in a good win at New Orleans - he looked great.

If Giddey shoots 32% from the 3, then why was he shooting 0% in this video? What makes Josh look bad is the Thunder brings a bench like Cason, Isaiah Joe and Wiggins, all great 3 pt shooters. It makes Josh look expendable. And he helped create the share the ball, assist laden culture the Thunder are known for. Like the pass to Wiggins on the back door cut 19 days ago vs Toronto with 5 seconds left to get us to overtime.

Vehemently disagree on his finishing touch. 65% at the rim and 45% from floater range (on high volume) is *excellent* for a player his age. Especially without high end athleticism. I'm actually really impressed with his ability to burrow his way to the basket and finish every time I watch him. He methodically works his way toward the rim and suddenly he has a layup. Giddey's biggest problem is he's a 6'8" point guard who's being asked to be a 3-and-D off ball wing. Its like using a hammer to chop down a tree and then saying the hammer sucks. The hammer is fine, you're just using it wrong
@sandman1347
@sandman1347 6 ай бұрын
His real problem is that the only teams that will actually hire someone that slow and unable to shoot to play point guard are over-seas. No NBA team is going for that. He can join Jimmer in China if he wants to be the guy running the show.
@astockimage6282
@astockimage6282 6 ай бұрын
His biggest problem is that he cannot shoot or defend which are 2 of the biggest needs to be even a competent nba player, and along with that his best trait his minimized cus hes unable to beat nba defenders off the dribble. His ceiling in the nba is a backup point guard on a low playoff team.
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 6 ай бұрын
@@astockimage6282 Broadly, yeah. I didn't love him as a prospect and even now I think his most likely outcome is a Luke Walton or Kyle Anderson type. Maybe Utah Rubio. And his non-uniformity creates team building challenges. All that being said, if he's playing PG, the defense isn't really a problem. We can probably assume a guy who reads the game as well as he does will eventually be a pretty smart help defender. And lots of guards are weak individual defenders but they aren't 6'8". Playing big lineups provides massive benefits. Look at Denver. Collective length covers up a lot of sins And I'm just gonna disagree on the necessity of being able to beat guys off the dribble. Bird, Magic, Jokic -- I'm sorry but that's a skill that is important but is *wildly* overrated. The kind of thing that makes people think Scoot Henderson is a better prospect than Brandon Miller Giddey finishes 62% of his shots inside 10 feet for his career. Ja is 61%. (Granted the rim finishing is 26% to 33%; although last season Josh was 30% to Ja's 29%) Giddey shoots 64% at the rim and 44% from floater range. Ja is 65% and 41%. That's not me saying he's as good a finisher as Ja -- he's obviously not -- but simply to illustrate that you can get to the basket and apply rim pressure in other ways. Giddey and Scottie Barnes are two guys who copy Magic in that regard. Luka does it too. And Jokic. They turn their back a lot and flip their dribble and because they are all big, they can get to 5-8 feet really easily The big problem for Giddey is his FT attempts are anemic and he *NEEDS* those FT to buoy his efficiency. To me that's the biggest red flag for him as a starting level player is he's contact averse and doesn't have those instincts to get guys off balance to draw contact. But I still think he could be a decent starter in his prime in SA with Victor or in Miami with Spo. (I just know he'd use Giddey as a DHO hub and it would be glorious.) But on MOST teams, he's a significantly worse option than someone like Deni Avdija

@@michaelahurt You're missing the forest from the trees man. Comparing Giddey to Ja is absurd considering Ja is the focal point of every defensive scheme he encounters meanwhile Giddey is the guy to leave open while trying to stop other people. Everything Giddey gets on the court is basically handed to him on a platter and he still blows most of his opportunities. Right now teams can sag off of Giddey and use his man to help everyone else. It kills their spacing and just generally hurts the team. Macro picture - he's basically like Draymond if he was a terrible defender...
@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 6 ай бұрын
@@sandman1347 You're missing the point. I'm not comparing Giddey to Ja. I'm using them to illustrate that you can get shots at the rim even without a great first step. It kills their spacing because he's off ball. That was what I said in the first place. He is bad role player. He sucks at playing off others because he doesn't have the tools take advantage of those silver platter opportunities. For him to succeed he needs the ball. His value is in being a 6'8" PG. If he's playing forward he's almost useless at this stage. Draymond is actually a perfect example. Draymond next to 95% of superstars would suck. He can't shoot and he can't jump. But because he played with Steph and Klay -- they with him -- they're all gonna be in the HOF. But stick Dray next to LeBron and he's what? Tristan Thompson? A worse Tristan Thompson? If Steph plays for Mark Jackson his entire career he's a multiple time All-Star, but he's not being discussed as a top 10-20 player ever or even close. How players are used matters. A lot. Who their teammates are matters. A lot. Giddey is a horrendous fit for what OKC needs out of that spot, but that doesn't mean he's a horrendous player in every situation. In a better context that maximizes what he does well and minimizes what he doesn't -- like Draymond found -- he could be a good player because the one thing he does exceedingly well is *really* important and he's 6'8"

Last year Giddey averaged 16.6 points but you're claiming he can't score? LMAO He's starting on what is arguably the best team in the West and he's an integral part of their success. His minutes have been cut back by 7 per game which is why his stats are down plus they've added Chet who obviously will take away from his number but he's improved his 3 point shooting to 33% and his free throws to 83%. You will see better play out of him the 2nd half because the bullshit with the girl is over. This is a REALLY dumb video.

Me being an okc fan and wanting to see Giddey succeed you bring up a lot of good points, he isn’t a finished product as of now but I have a few thoughts on what him as a finished player could look like, and I’ll bring up some positives I feel like he brings to the table already to this team. Regarding his future and what player he could turn into, i feel like if he can get his jumper to be like 34-36% on catch and shoot threes i could maybe see him as like a Joe ingles with worse court spacing and offball instincts. Great passing as you mentioned and if he can improve marginally as a shooter (which he already has to this point) a lot of the gripes people have with him as a scorer won’t be as prevalent. He’s also developed a little but of bully ball post game this year, and while he’s not good at it right now I could see that being an interesting wrinkle he could bring to the offense down the road. I also feel like he’s pretty decent from floater range even tho the stats this season wouldn’t suggest that, the last 2 seasons he’s been better from that area. I’m not sure if it’s a confidence thing or something else but I don’t suspect he’ll be low 40s from that area in the long term, more of a slightly above average efficiency from that spot on high volume. What he brings right now to okc is a decent backup point guard for non shai minutes, and his rebounding is also pretty helpful on this team that’s one of the worst in that category in the league. He doesn’t make up for all our rebounding woes but he stops the bleeding in a sense, and our wings already struggle immensely in that aspect so to have a guard compensate for that is pretty cool. I also think while he isn’t a good on ball defender by any means I do think he’s a large body who knows how to position himself correctly in many instances, I don’t usually see to many lapses off ball where the opposition is able to create an advantage from his lack of awareness. Also he just became of legal drinking age dude still has so much more growing to do. I know he has a lot of weaknesses right now but this was to be expected, the lineup numbers with him and shai sharing the court weren’t pretty even last season when were were damn near 500. We know he’s an awkward fit especially with shai but I’m willing to be patient, and when we started to be competitive again his weaknesses would be more apparent, and us having such an accelerated rebuild did him no favors because he’s even less for a finished product then he would’ve been had we not been as good this season. Not tryna make excuses, he has been having a rough season, but I’m keeping my stock I still see the upside. Idk if you’ll see this but I’d love to see if I’m being a delusional okc fan or u kinda see what I’m saying.

I couldn’t read the sheet music (only the frets) and resorted to just playing random shit during the practice. I saw him frowning as he conducted and needless to say he stopped pressuring me to attend. Sigh, I imagine Giddey must feel a bit like that but on a much grander scale. ridiculous arguments. It's like you want him to be another Curry or Fox, that's what SGA is for. The athletic argument is ridiculous, Jokic isn't athletic either. Josh is as quick as anyone else up the floor. Just because a player doesn't put on a circus show doesn't make him a bad player. Depending who he's on with he's playing virtually every position. His court vision is insane. He's already one of the best passers in NBA history. Noone comes remotely close as an inbound passer. He's made game winning passes on multiple occasions. What's the problem with being aggressive going to the rim? Yeah he fumbles the ball occasionally, but then so does bloody Harden. So do tons of good players. His handles will only improve with time, as will his 3 pt percentage. The whole frigging team shoots the three well, over 30% isn't terrible. He's a key part of the team's continued success, despite this cherrypicked trashing.

I gotta say, I think you’re going to eat humble pie on this one. Do you understand that although it may be Giddey’s third season, he’s actually younger than Chet Holmgren? You don’t need him to be an offensive hub pressuring defences with his scoring, he’s got great connective passing and can score as required. 55% TS isn’t great, but he’s got a lot of room to grow, not least because he’s only 21. Also, 34% from 3 isn’t good either, but there’s worse for sure.. I could genuinely see him growing to be an all star in future as he continues to grow in experience.

He's not a bad player, he's being played as a shooting guard, and his shooting isn't there yet. He's only 21. This is an awful hack at a young player who has improved his shooting every year He's been in the league! He's a point guard that never has the ball in his hands because Shai is there. He just needs to get out of OKC and into a system that needs a 1!

These are the same dudes who said Jokic is a better scorer than Luka. I mean I can understand if you think Jokic is a better player, but it's ridiculous to think he's a better scorer than Doncic. As for Giddey, he's a good role player, and could become an exceptional role player.

IF IM THE POLITICIAN AROUND THE WORLD I WOULD TAKE A BIG REVIEW ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE CALL "MINOR THAT DOESNT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING" VS " MINOR THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING" IT SEEMS IT IS TOO DOUBLE STANDARD AND IT RUINS A LOT OF ADULT GUYS LIFE. 1. CHECK AND VALIDATE IF A 15 YR OLD COMMITTED A CRIME LIKE KILLING THEY WOULD GO JUVY OR JAIL. MEANING WE ACKNOWLEDGE THESE MINOR ARE MINDFUL ALREADY OF THEIR ACTIONS AND DECISIONS. AND THEN, SAME AGE MINOR DECIDED TO LIE ABOUT THEIR AGE AND FLIRT WITH AN ADULT THE ADULT GUY GOES TO JAIL FOR DOING SO. WHO REALLY IS TO BE BLAME THERE???THE GUY ENDS UP IN A RUINED AND SHAMED LIFE FOREVER. MY POINT IS MAKE UP A CONCRETE CONSISTENCY IN MAKING LAWS REGARDING MINOR. EVERYONE SEEMS BLAMING THE GUY MORE BUT IT IS MINIMAL TO THE PARENTS WHO JUST LET THIS SELF DECIDED FREE BIRD TO IMMATURELY DO HER TIKTOK, HER CLUBBING AND HER GETTING WITH GUYS WITH NO PARENTAL GUIDANCE OR WITH BUT SHUTDOWN PARENTAL GUIDANCE IF PARENTS CANT HANDLE THE MINOR MAKE THE MINOR ACCOUNTABLE AND STILL BLAME THE PARENTS FOR NOT ABLE TO HANDLE THE MINOR. Both a lifelong OKC fan and from Giddeys home country of Australia. I was rooting for him, especially in his sophomore season where he's was pretty good, this season I thought he'd be unleashed with Chet added to the system but man he looks lost and does not fit in our system today, there is a big reason he doesn't play in crunch time aside for in an inbounds pass, he can't score, can't defend, can't shoot, can't dunk I can go on. I was so bought in onto the hype and the bias and his first couple seasons that I could look past that, but with OKC taking things more serious this years its blatantly obvious he is not a go to guy when goings are tough

your not from Aus because using the term "rooting" for someone is not part of the Australian vocabulary, in fact it means something entirely different in Australia and rarely ever used for that meaning either, it think you are a fraud, if you are indeed from Aus, than you have lost your way lol.

i’m a thunder fan and have wanted him gone all year, but i see the vision: he already has the passing vision and switchable size that you can’t necessarily teach, and a delayed development cycle isn’t a terrible thing when you consider the cap rules. if you get consistent, incremental improvements in giddey’s shooting off the catch (say, 2% per year for the next 3 years, which is doable with the terrific shooting coaches okc’s got) and defense, then he could become a pretty good fourth guy as his build fills out and his drives get backed up with better strength. if that takes 3-4 years, that’s actually not bad for the thunder because it gets them past his first contract negotiation before he fills out into a $15 million/year guy. i’m not a cap expert by any means, but from what i’ve seen and heard, the biggest issue under the new CBA is getting good value from non-stars. if he’s not a top 50ish guy when he signs the extension but can develop into one, then he makes sense. definitely a disappointing return for the 6th overall pick, but a guy who can shoot like 38% on catch-and-shoot 3s, play alright defense with a switchable frame, and brings really good playmaking seems to me like he fits along with the core. assuming he can stay playing basketball.

@jstopgamingl1671 3 ай бұрын
So you're saying the off court drama is making him shoot 30% on wide open 3s? Is it also making him not play good defense at all? You just gotta face the fact that for a young team that be competitive, having a player that is an offensive liability without providing anything on defense isn't gonna work. Every team is gonna take advantage of him come playoff time.

OKC can fix this one. They should know that Giddey is NOT an OFFBALL player, he sucks, But he is a good playmaker. What they need to do is: - Start Wiggins or Joe or even, Hayward (for more experience) - Bench Giddey, make him the playmaker PG at the bench (together with Jdub as people know that Jdub is the only playmaker once SGA sits) - Get some SF/PF in the draft that has a great body, shot creator and good rebounder

what do interesting to me is that he would be better anywhere but OKC, they’re playing 5 out, and he can’t shoot, he can’t handle, and he isn’t fast. how’s he meant to get a shot to fall? if he was with a more traditional point guard or even if he had someone on his team more adept at creating shots that are good for specific people (i.e. luka, jokic, or harden) Shai is a good ball distributor but the thing about him is when he gets you the ball you still have to kind of create a shot, no matter how open you are, which giddy can’t do

Of course Giddey could improve his jump shot if he does the work he could also improve on defense because although he is not as athletic as others he is STILL 6 FOOT 8 and yes that means something.. I do think he may be traded and he will never be close to a star but if he improves his shooting just open shots and is smart on Defense he can become a solid role player.. However if he does none of those things then forget it..

probably lets wait till after Paris to see where he is at, the NBA isnt what it used to be, for a start, all the talk about his lack of defending, wow, look at scorelines, no body defends. Look at Aus league where 90pts will win you a game week in week out, we dont get 30 and 40pt blow outs because in our league every game is a grand final, no prima donna's here. Giddey had a lot on his plate this season, a lot more than the guy who made this video. So as we say in Aus "dont judge till you have walked a mile in another mans shoes" which clearly Nerdsesh has never done, hence why Giddey went 6 in the draft, is in his 3rd NBA season and only 21 on a conference leading team and nerd sesh is sitting behind a computer screen.
