when you hear different people sing with the same song, with their different specialties of talent (singer, film actor, Theatre/ musical actor) you will realize how they also adopt to their own line of artistic performance and all of them have their own versions. I like Josh Groban and his version is more gracious and gentle on the emotions. In another hand, Eddie was really good at acting and his voice was great but also realistic enough for us to see the character. Sometimes we battle between what we will highlight, the music? the character? the story? Either way, all must be from the heart. Art is freeing, and so artists should feel free to make their choices. People nowadays compare too much. I understand that we have our favourites, but bickering about who is better to the point of not even knowing why or how they managed to sing the song is a bit, well, egoistic and selfish. we lose what really matters, that is, the moral and the heart of this song. The grief, the agony, the guilt of this song. The pain that someone dealt with when they are telling a story they went through, but not their loved ones or their friends. The emptiness you feel when you are all alone now. The void you will never again fill for they are gone... The melancholy of missing someone you will never be able to be with again and the question of why? what for? In the core of every art piece, there is always a center of purpose. So please, respect these different story tellers.

So well said. Art should be appreciated for the emotions and ideas it evokes. It should unite us. Yet five years on, people seem even more intolerant of differing opinions and perspectives. I'm really loving this arrangement! The way it sounds at the beginning reminds me very much of a hauntingly melancholic jazz song. It ends up blending so well into the big orchestral sound. And then at the end, back to the same theme of the sparse instrumentation with just the strings and the piano playing the clashing jazz chords. Beautifully done. I MUST know who arranged this!
I would do just about anything for just the instrumental part of this. I love it so much.

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables Eddie Redmayne There's a grief that can't be spoken, There's a pain goes on and on. Empty chairs at empty tables, Now my friends are dead and gone. Here they talked of revolution, Here it was they lit the flame, Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came. From the table in the corner, They could see a world reborn, And they rose with voices ringing, And I can hear them now The very words that they have sung Became their last communion On this lonely barricade, at dawn. Oh my friends, my friends forgive me That I live and you are gone There's a grief that can't be spoken, And there's a pain goes on and on Phantom faces at the window, Phantom shadows on the floor, Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will meet no more. Oh my friends, my friends don't ask me What your sacrifice was for Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friend will sing no more.

Jess, Agreed. I just saw it at the Imperial Theater in NYC the day before the run ended. John Owen Jones as Valjean! Amazing. And, I LOVE LOVE Josh Groban, and his version of Bring Him Home is AMAZING, because that is a more mature song and is more polished, but for me this version of Empty Tables is a little too perfect--I like Marius a little more raw and broken in this song, and younger sounding. After all, he's "only a boy."
@jesss71057 жыл бұрын
Mmmm, I never thought of it that way! I listened again and I must agree, that it is rather polished. The song sounds all the more powerful when it's sung with raw emotion! I guess I'll judge when I go see the show again next year! Becky Wilson-Shore

Eddie did do a great job but if you have ever seen this show on stage, every single actor has blown him out of the room. I have seen Les Mis roughly 20 times, including on Broadway and sadly, he didn't come close to that level.

IDC about the rest of the movie.... Eddie's sing-acting in this song is incredibly moving. Musically, others have done better. But the acting part... he is broken and shocked and grief-stricken. It blew me away. Left me in tears in a way no other version had. I MEAN I DIED.

Josh Groban does a nice job at this song with a different arrangement than the standard one. Josh should be in a musical on stage on Broadway or in West End. He has such a talent, that shouldn't be wasted just in doing concerts and recording CD's. He needs to be on stage in musicals having sung and acted in a show that is forever known. He needs to be the one that makes the song popular, not singing songs that others have made it known before him.

As a musical theatre actress while it's very contrary to popular belief it's more important to act then to sing and that's why Eddie Redmayne got the part. Plus he was unbelievably amazing. But Josh Groban will always be the king of vocals.
