Long time AU fan here. AU has always been able to put defensive guys in the NFL and we've always been one of the running back powers of the SEC. But we've never been elite at WR no matter who was coaching. I believe AU has only put one WR into the 1st round since 1984 (yes, you heard that right). It's simply impossible to win in today's pass happy game without elite WR's, just like it wasn't possible to win in the 80's without elite RB's. Hugh has brought in FOUR top notch WR's in his first class. If that isn't progress, then I don't know what is.

With all due respect, as an Ole Miss fan- he is not a better coach than Lane. He just isn’t. He’s a phenomenal recruiter and got lucky a lot with phenomenal talent. That 2014-2016 run we had we should’ve gone 10/11 wins a season and should’ve gone to Atlanta at least once. If Lane had that stacked roster Hugh had he would’ve done that and that’s why Ole Miss fans are so pumped for this season because we finally have that level of talent. But during that time we lost a lot of games with mediocre play calling that we should’ve won. I mean a lot of head scratchers. And considering Hugh literally hired a ton of his former staffers that were with him during the Ole Miss days have fun. Auburn has a bigger war chest than Ole Miss and yes I think y’all are headed in the right direction but don’t hold your breath too long. Especially if the 2025 recruiting class falls apart. Then if he doesn't win at least 8 games in 2025 after 2 completely non productive seasons then he would be fired.... that's just Auburn football love it or hate it... I think we finish with 8 wins after the bowl game which will be enough to satisfy boosters and maintain a solid recruiting class

The sample size is too small at this point IMO, but I get where people are coming from on the hot seat talk. AU was a miserable watch last year, and it was vintage Freeze, way way up for the big ones and just looked like it didn't care the rest of the time. In today's SEC you can't do that, too many teams are too good. Hell, you couldn't do that in 2014 and 2015. The over under win total is 7.5, even if it hits over, 8 wins, you've got a coach entering year 3 of a 6 year contract a hair over .500 (overall) and a losing record in the league. So do you rally the NIL money around Freeze going into 2025, and try and make that your year (Bama/UGA in AU & manageable road slate - Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt)? Do you extend his contract going into 2025? 2023 6-7 (3-5) 2024 8-4 (4-4) 2025

Pate…normally I’m a fan of yours but man you are showing your ignorance when you say shit like “Auburn was always more than a QB away blah blah blah.” Yes it’s true that we need more than a QB this year but you should also know that by brining in a better QB talent and spending that money to get him there, it impacts so much more. Getting a top tier QB first off elevates that position room to be more competitive and not be as lazy and complacent as ours has been. BUT having that guy there, it makes the other position captains or leaders also elevate their level of play and competition. It also allows the other position groups to play within their capabilities instead of feeling the need to overcompensate and play above their heads. Which is what we’re seeing all over the field at Auburn right now. Which is why we’re seeing all the dumbass mistakes we’re seeing. So yes. The NIL money should have been spent on bringing in another QB. And for the record, we aren’t hurting on NIL money at all and had plenty of room in the budget to do what we did and still bring in a QB talent. What we actually had happen was Freeze was protecting his asset while covering his own ass, when it comes to Thorne. If Thorne fails, it shows that Freeze isn’t the guru everyone has made him out to be. Which is actually closer to the truth than people want to say out loud. Freeze is NOT anywhere near the coach that people sell him to be. His record actually speaks to that if you are honest about it. Just beating Saban twice isn’t a big whooptydo. Gus did it. I know the ladies of the night in Auburn don't want Hugh to go anywhere. BEST CLIENT EVER. Calls on a state phone and everything. Not a fan of this religious hypocrite. Now, on the football front. It is funny how Josh dismiss the Vandy losses as unusual blip upsets that happen yet does not extend the same logic to Bama's losses to Ole Miss. Why are those wins reputation makers for Freeze and not just unusual blip upset losses for Saban? Just looking for consistency (which is a comment I left that SEC podcast the other day as well. Mike struggles with it too sometimes.)
