"The Red Sea, the Dead Sea, The Sermon on the Mount, if you want to see a miracle watch me get down tonight!" I think the most beautiful/inspiring miracle to behold is witnessing a person finding their internal moral compass and then confidently allowing it to be their guide even amidst many social pressures to conform to codes or norms that may be varying degrees of harmful or decent.

I was introduced to this song by my parents. It is a staple of road trips and singing by campfires for my family. It also has a super important meaning which I see a lot in my parents. My family is super liberal christian, and both worked in ministry and my dad went to seminary. And I can definitely see what they like in this song is the talk of the strict harsh side of christianity that some people follow, and force on others.

I heard this song after a night driving around, despairing nobody got me. A miracle isn't when the sky opens, it's when the world responds. Josh, you were the voice of a miracle that morning. Thank you!

Because it's almost exactly what the parents of the girls' parents patently believed...probably feverishly... Those small small towns in the Midwest....only like 5 generations removed from legitimate share croppers...I grew up with tent revivals; When a living- on-the-road evangelists would whirl into a town; preaching loudly, sweatily, baptizing everyone and extending the length of "The Revival" , because the Spirit moved them.... not because the fuel pump on the old Motorcoach wasn't gonna last much longer.... silly....sweet....but...ultimately Not Great lol

Found this song today. LOVE it! Brilliant, beautiful, been listening all night. True talent that captivates my heart and has me dancing in my kitchen while I cheers my wine! But I challenge you - Jesus DOES love your highschool dance. HE loves JOY. He came to confront the joy stealers and the religious. They are the only ones He EVER talked down to. Please don't mix them with Him. He's the free bird! You might miss him in Christian College or wherever; He's a rag tag, an outlaw, your kind of people...just saying! Love your stuff!

Another (related) comparison is the clear lyrics in Hamilton. I sometimes have an issue with mumbling or way-to-fast delivery in some hip-hop and rap that turns me off; I read their lyrics and can see they are clever, but if I can't hear it clearly in the song it is somewhat wasted.

The unassuming voice of a generation. In many ways it's a shame that a genius such as this...one who shines a light on our most private, yet shared emotions, with such simple prose...exists in the shadows of a superficial industry. However, I think that we all prefer it to be that way.

I think it means dancing honestly. I'm only in my 20s, but when I hear "get down" I think dance. It also ties in the "Jesus hates your high school dances" line. In any case most songs leave significant portions of their lyrics up to their audience to interpret so that they can relate to it on a personal level. He probably left it a little vague on purpose. And in my experience, you find evil where you look for it. If you go through life searching for sin, you'll see it everywhere including in places where it really isn't. I used to see the world that way and ended up getting severe anxiety attacks which, based on the Sermon on the Mount, I know Christ doesn't want me to have. If the song makes you uncomfortable or violates your conscience then by all means, don't listen to it. Don't let it be your stumbling block. But also don't try to bind abstaining from Josh Ritter on people you've never met. This song is clearly helping Christians with their faith for many varied reasons. To me the "get down" isn't dancing and certainly isn't sex. My "getting down" is getting through my anxiety. This song has helped me battle my mental illness while reminding me why the fight is worth it. Please don't try to take that from me. And maybe instead of looking for the darkness, look for the light. I think you'll like what you find. *Proverbs **11:27** (ESV) Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it.*

To me the message of this song is what happens when you discover the true meaning of the gospel. It’s to live and love freely and to not be confined by the legalistic explanations that drive so many from the church. “Talking about love like its apple pie and liberty” illustrates she has discovered about true love is not this commercialization or Americanized version, but it’s what she discovered in bible school. Love is freedom and sacrifice as taught in the gospel. I do see how other meanings can be derived which makes this such a universally applicable song and I’m surprised it’s not more popular.
@RhinestoneDjango5 жыл бұрын
bishir25 You missed the entire point of the song as well as all the terrible ideas in the New Testament that stand in complete opposition to what you’re saying (pro-slavery, anti-woman, infinite punishment, treatment of others, death payment for forgiveness, etc)
