A couple quick notes regarding the Blackmagic. When comparing with hybrids, the value of the two-pin DC input usually gets downplayed too much. The CC can take power directly from a v-mount d-tap, or from a power bank USB-C port, or from mains power, with the internal battery never needing to be touched. It’s there as a fail safe and as a hot-swap backup power source. You can detach and replace a v-mount in the middle of a take, and the camera will not miss a frame. Especially for long events videography, that’s a huge advantage. * You can stabilize in Resolve by the way, using the internal gyro data, which will often work better than IBIS (no wobbly corners on wide angle lenses). You can also use stabilization (when set to 0) as a method to correct camera-induced rolling shutter. That still does not correct for wonky looking golf clubs during a swing. * Does the R5C do auto proxies? I’m not sure. * And something that none of us can test yet, but cloud integration is coming soon, and based on my experiments with the BM App on my phone, for some users that will be a big advantage in that you can connect a cellphone or hotspot to the USB-C port of the CC and get auto uploads of proxies after every take. For quick turn around situations, this could be an affordable alternative to Frame .io. And let’s not forget the CC has a full function live production camera hidden inside, plus remote control via ATEM switcher that no one talks about. If you stream on the side as well as do filmmaking, then Blackmagic offers an enormous value there. The thing is, the R5C is a hybrid stills camera, whereas the CC is a hybrid production camera. They each start in totally different realms, and meet somewhere close to the middle, but in the end each stakes out a different “half” of the middle. Have a great week.

R5C can dual record low bitrate proxies and also shoot high bitrate “sub recordings”. the nice thing about proxies and sub recording that I figured out on my own and kind of missed from only shooting in clog3 for RAW+xfavc sub mode for more accurate RAW monitoring (false color is wonky in this camera and shifts between profiles - I think @Josh_sattin said this elsewhere maybe?) was that if you switch to a rec709 or hdr/PQ profile, that carries through to the second recording (this seems like common sense but I don’t see in the manual where they state this explicitly). It follows if you remember RAW has no actual gamma curve or color space baked in camera but the compressed second recording will of course have a gamma and gamut. nice way to bake a deliverable immediately in a 10bit sub mode. basically what happens when you only shoot compressed

@@restlake Interesting. No question the cine side of the R5C has inherited a lot from its bigger brethren. If I shot C300 or C500 and wanted a small b-cam for gimbal and high rigging, the camera would be a good choice.

Interesting comparison & both great cameras with their different strengths and features. One thing you missed with frame rates - the R5C can shoot up to 120p 3K raw in cropped super 16 mode.

That is interesting. I have an R5C and discovered this feature thanks to you. I'm still confused why Canon has 4K 120 fps (XF-AVC) in full-frame and 3K 120 fps (RAW) in super16, but there's nothing for Super35 past 60 fps for any settings. I would think that it would be easier to do a cropped slow motion than full frame.

Apparently 4K full frame 120 is line skipped. Still looks fine to me but it's not as processor intensive as oversampled in the other non raw modes. I'm guessing super 35 oversampled or raw modes are too many pixels for the processor to handle beyond 60p whereas super 16 is approximately half that number of pixels.

@@csound55 Yeah. I get that logic. R5C definitely can't do Super35 oversampled because then it would have to read the sensor faster than the highest raw output. 60 is the ceiling for raw/oversampled. But, my thinking is, if it can do line-skipped 120 in full-frame, why can't it do it for Super35? Usually, for other manufacturers, it's easier to do cropped slow-mo, so the absence in this camera seems unusual. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer 120 in full-frame than Super 35, but why not both?

Nice one Josh, well put together as always. A hell of a lot of work went into this video! Look at how clean the R5C is at high ISO's. Believe it or not, I was filming a Cellist in an old church recently in very low light and it was the first time since owning the R5C, that I raised the ISO to over 3200. The footage looked great at 6400 and 12800.

It was such an elaborate comparison. Absolutely loved it, man. Just a bit of confusion regarding the indoor shot at 5:23, this is the raw ungraded clip, right? So, here the noise refers to the noise we see in the RAW file when interpreted in Clog2, correct? Or did you interpret it in clog3?

Well done. I've always thought the Black Magic had a really good look. Nice colors. Clean. I'm happy to see the R5c held it's own. I just shot a job with an R5c and it's pretty dang easy to get a nice product from it. I think the cost value and the result you get for the studio usage the BM is great. You don't move around that much. Stays in focus well. Is B-Raw that good? Seems everyone likes to use it. Kinda like RED raw? I don't have any issues with Canon codecs but I also don't swim in other pools.

Thanks for making these vids. The BM full frame is absolute magic at 400 iso. Beyond that - it falls flat. I have one. Working with support as not sure if it’s a bad unit or just poorly tested before release and all units out there have unusable higher iso use. Even at 1250 it gets noisy shadows.

Problem with R5C is that the camera combine R5 great photo camera and C70 great video camera. BUT is not good as R5 for stills and is not good as C70 for video. That`s why I sold R5C and bought C70 + Canon RP (I know, for photos huge downgrade, but I am wating for R5II)

Blackmagic really dropped the ball on this camera. Limited frame rates, bad low light, horrible rolling shutter, bad form factor, no internal ND, and the list just goes on and on....and I love Blackmagic! I really hope the new URSA Full Frame will be better
