Thank you for the honest review. As a BMCC6K owner, I bought the camera for the reasons you have mentioned at the beginning of the video. I was aware of the drawbacks mentioned later. It is all down to your application, the way you use the camera and for what. I'm very happy with the camera and I would recommend it IF you want to achieve high image quality, colors and easy workflow.

glad you are happy with it that the most important. that said though - literally any 10bit FF camera out there can achieve same results with less cost, AF and IBIS. People like us - amateurs - need to be aware of this.

I don't own the BMCC6K or any BM camera, I use Canon. However I've been really impressed with the image quality of BMCC6K footage posted on different channels. I've tried working with test clips of 12bit B-raw in Resolve. It's excellent quality, manageable file sizes and super easy to work with (in Resolve) and BM cameras probably have the best and easiest menu system. BMCC6K has a daylight viewable high quality display & the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve is included in the price. To me those factors are just as important or more so than IBIS or auto focus. I guess it depends on the type of work you do that determines the type of functionality you need. I'm very happy with my canon R5C but if I decide to invest in another camera it will be the BMCC6K.
@CINENIMUS Жыл бұрын
I would argue that in competent hands R5C blows Blackmagic out of the water there is no competition between the two. Even in colour. You only get that that tiny bit more flexibility in post with BMCC6K. But if you know how to expose and light correctly that advantage goes outta window.

Interesting you say this. I’ve graded a LOT of Canon footage and have never been impressed with the color. Always felt thin to me. Of course, I’ve graded RED and Arri footage too, so maybe this isn’t a fair comparison. Canon colors look real, but not rich, if that makes any sense. BM colors look rich, but not real. I’d buy a RED camera in a heartbeat if I had the money.

Thanks for the candid and honest opinion. The lure of the camera is that colour fidelity, the gargantuan screen and the icing on the cake, the full frame recording. I've seen some beautiful anamorphic stuff from this camera, truly spectacular. However, what the great camera makers give with one hand, they take away with another......IBIS, decent slow- mo. Hi! I own a Canon 90d. Been using it for some years now however I'm contemplating purchasing a new camera. My thoughts are either the Blackmagic 6k pro or the fx30. The natural transition would be the Blackmagic as I could still use my EF lenses. Bit of a tough choice for me really. That fx30 would do great especially due to the autofocus and ibis as I usually work alone so having a compact setup where I don't need to do much will go a long way. The choice to get a new camera is really to jump from that beginner/middle-tier quality footage to a more professional tier of image and also to have higher and better recording formats. Which do you think would be the better purchase? PS: more into narrative work.

Thanks for your thoroughly review. It's a weird camera, for sure. I bought it since I care mostly about image quality and I'm already invested in the L-Mount system, I wanted BRAW and didn't want the chunky combo of adding the visual assist to my S5. Somehow I think this camera is akin to the Sigma Quattro in photography, where you had a weird body camera, a dated interface, an overall slow system, very limited in functionalities with battery issues as well... but the quality image... that was "the reason" to get that camera, but I agree that it was not for everybody. Regarding the reviewers that you accuse of not being neutral, I don't know if you're referring to Mateo or "Of Two Lands", but so far I think they're being pretty neutral, obviously not hiding that they like this camera (as flawed as it is). Thanks again for the video! And I hope you keep posting footage of the 6K FF. Cheers.

Commenting on why Blackmagic doesn't have IBIS (And I LOVE IBIS) is because cinema cameras rely on external sources of stabilization, there are a couple inherit problems with ibis, namely lens flare elements reveal how shaky your footage originally was before its stabilized by the sensor, this can be very distracting. And the second point is, if you are doing any sort of VFX that requires complex tracking, you are making your life a LOT harder by using IBIS (Trust me I made that mistake). That being said, I love my Blackmagic camera along the Panasonic S5II, they compliment each other very well.

I use BM in a very narrow way check my insta you will see its mostly travel commercial work. I need raw for that and nothing else if I needed AF, or stabilisation or frame rates, or descent rolling shutter or low light performance - I would literally do better with anything else out there. One of my favourites - Sony ZVE1, defo a camera of the year contender - MEGA undervalued 👌in right hands its an FX6 without ND and with IBIS and better AF haha

Guys I have this cam and can confirm this review is accurate. Gyro doesn’t work correctly and second base iso is 1250 (Blackmagic support themselves confirmed this to me and recommended that 3200 iso not be used!).

@@CINENIMUS direct quote from BM support ticket: “ISO 1250 should be the top ISO when shooting in lower light, as anything higher and you start to see the increase in noise and you will have to use noise reduction in post.”
@NeonCucumber Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty upset with them at the moment. Perhaps they can adjust with a firmware release (the initial firmware release did lower the noise somewhat - but still needs abundant light). This is what my follow up was to them: To BM: You should correspond with your marketing team as they are directly contradicting what you have conveyed and ultimately are not accurately listing the specifications or use cases for this camera. Below is directly from the page which outlines the two iso bases of this device: direct quote from your web site: “In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. This means the higher the ISO number the more sensitivity to light so it’s possible to shoot using natural light even at night! The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K features dual native ISO up to 25,600, which means it’s optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain is set automatically as you adjust the ISO setting, so it's easy to capture great images when you don’t have time to set up lights.”

As an S5 iix user I can say there are more tangible advantages to this camera than appears in specs alone. For instance the S5 ii x says it has open gate and says it has 6K and says it has BRAW, but in practice using one you will lose another. For instance BRAW is only through HDMI but going through HDMI you lose open gate. Also you need to add the external monitor and recorder and so on. Looking at specs it will appear that S5 ii x has the same rolling shutter as this camera but again in practice black magic win out because of its gyro which can almost completely correct rolling shutter using a push button feature in Resolve. So many aspects are like this and is why I moved from the S5 ii x, which I loved, to the 6K.

In regards to rolling shutter, the Alexa 35/LF and the Sony Venice 2 which are the top cameras for higher end production have a rolling shutter. Yes their rolling shutters are fast. I do feel global shutter cameras tend to take a hit in dynamic range. People like to say the Komodo has great dynamic range and is global shutter. I would argue without the software based highlight recovery the Komodo would have less dynamic range than a Pocket 6k. That isn't great considering the Pocket 6k is 1/3rd the price of a Komodo. The C70 has about the same dynamic range as the Komodo without software based highlight recovery. Yes the new Sony A9III has a global shutter but there are already reports saying it's dynamic range appears to be less than the A7S3 or the A1.

@genericuser73196 ай бұрын
@@CINENIMUS Easy bud, I didn't mean to upset you- just pointing out that the BMCC6k is intended to be a cinema camera and should be judged as such. You're trying to compare seemingly similar things but with different purposes. Mirrorless cameras are amazing for KZbinrs, wedding videographers, and travel bloggers because their content demand a certain feature set- great auto-focus performance, small size, image stabilization, etc. They typically work alone so they don't need their footage to fit in a professional, collaborative workflow. Cinema cameras on the other hand value image quality and professional workflow above all else- high bit-rate RAW codecs, lens mount options, timecode, pro-audio connections. There are industry standards when turning over to a colorist or mix house. BMCC6k gives 6k full frame open gate RAW recording for $1,600 ($1,300 really if you factor in the $300 resolve license). Name a mirrorless camera (hell, name any camera) that gives you that at that price point. You can't. And that's the whole point you seem to miss. The BMCC6k is an amazing value... for someone who needs its features. This camera holds it's own among professional cinema cameras at a fraction of their cost.The rolling shutter is mostly counter-acted by just enabling gyro stabilization in Resolve with a strength of zero. No crop in and rolling shutter is gone. The dynamic range is 13 stops, 1 stop less than the Arri SXT and Mini LF! The body is made of carbon fiber (they literally build airplanes out of it). The noise of an improperly exposed image can be reduced in Resolve with noise reduction- which honestly, I MUCH rather be able to control in post using my computer's CPU rather than relying on the tiny chip in a camera to do it in real time. These features are amazing for a filmmaker just starting out. So, in conclusion, if it's more important to have IBIS and amazing auto-focus performance because you're run and gunning around a wedding or shooting your KZbin intro, GREAT! The BMCC6k isn't for you because you don't need a cinema camera. Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck with the channel!

Hey man, Interesting review and nice work. Thanks for posting. One point though about the sound, your explanation about the dynamic range doesn’t make sense. That’s not how dynamic range is manipulated, calculated or expressed. You just recorded two different levels of sound one of which was a mono signal and another was one side of the same signal. Also… as an ex music producer with a physics degree and masters is Acoustics, I’d say that no one needs higher resolution sound than what’s presented in the unit as no one can tell the difference in resolution 👍🏿

Great review, I love Blackmagic but they really need to stop recycling parts from their own part bins and come out with a completely NEW camera. I know that this is a new sensor but it’s not enough for people to either upgrade or switch to this camera. I understand that they want to keep the cameras affordable but people will pay more for whatever they find value in OR whatever makes their work easier. Essentially, Blackmagic just sells cameras with amazing sensors…….THATS IT!………they are not really innovative when it comes to modern features that most prosumers are looking for. If they release a camera that has reliable autofocus and image stabilization they will truly disturb the industry again. Even if it cost 1k to 2k more. Contrary to popular belief, the resolve license that comes with blackmagic cameras should not be sold on. It's in the end user license agreement that the ownership of the license is tied to the ownership of the camera. In your case, it likely won't ever be an issue, unless you were to sell that camera on to someone else. That person may be able to retrieve that copy of resolve by contacting blackmagic with the cameras serial number, and the person you sold the license to wouldn't be very happy. I don't think it causes issues most of the time, but it's possible.
