Josh, I totally agree with you. After flying with Korean Air, I'm spoiled for life. From check in to arrival they provide the best service. I've flown only economy class on many different airlines and they fall short. I love how they help parents out when kids are tired and crying. I have never seen any other airline do this. It so sweet to the crew picking up babies and walking around with them to give parents and passengers a break. Especially in those L.A- Incheon flights

Hi Josh, the fan blades are just moving with the wind. Power on the ground is provided by either the auxiliary power unit (APU) which is a small jet engine in the tail of the aircraft or by a ground power connection. At this stage of the flight though it’s likely the ground power is connected as this is always preferable for environmental and cost reasons. Normally the APU is used to provide bleed air to start the engines so this is normally started before engine start at which point the ground power is disconnected.

I've flown Korean Air twice (once on their A380s, to date my only A380 flight). I agree their crew is impeccable both in appearance and mannerisms. The catering is often really good, especially their bibimbap, and I especially appreciate the extra legroom that they normally have in comparison to other airlines. The only thing is that their IFE could be updated slightly.

Wow! I thought i was the only one thinking of Pepsi, every time I see a Korean Air Plane 4:15 the blades were rotating because of the wind. For electronic modern Airports have a ground cable, otherwise the APU (Small auxiliary engine in the tail of the aircraft) is used. The interesting thing here: As the fan is rotating very fast, building up huge kinetic energy, it has to be perfectly balanced to reduce stress on other components (and safe fuel). So, although the fan blades are quite heavy, they're so perfectly balanced, that you can start rotating them with your little finger. And so of course does the wind when hitting the very aerodynamic surface.

I have just 8 flights on Korean Air in my log book, but every one of them have been fantastic. The crews are pleasant and attentive, the food is excellent. I've got 3 options from my home airport to ICN. Korean, Asiana and Delta. I will ALWAYS book Korean before Delta. I haven't flown Asiana, so I can't comment on them. The economy class product is superior and the leg room alone is worth a higher fare in my book. But then again, for long haul, I will always pick a non-US carrier if it is an option.

Flew Korean round trip in economy from SEA - HAN in January. By far my favorite economy experience I have had to date for both legs. Very consistent and well above average service. The Bibimbap on the long haul flight is simply the best meal in economy! The departure times out of Seattle do mean afternoon connections in Seoul so my only complaint is that Korean’s schedule out of Seattle makes for a very long travel day(s) if you are continuing further south.

Josh, On another KZbin aviation channel (High Pressure Aviation Films probably), I heard a comment from a pilot that explains seeing those fan blades rotating. The pilots in that video were taxing a bit slower than they had to meet the minimum required time for "engine cool down" after landing. The engines have to run slowly and idle for a given amount of time in order to properly cool down after landing. (Like a cool down period after a workout.) The engines are so hot just after landing that shutting them down immediately would easily damage the interior mechanics. That why I think the fan blades you saw were turning slowly at the gate.
@Expat_Jimmy2 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love Korean Air. The Crew and service make the flight very enjoyable.
@JetsonRING5 жыл бұрын
The fan blades spin freely, driven indirectly by the exhaust from the turbine engine hidden behind the hub of the fan. When at the gate and with the engines shut down, wind passing through the "pod" can turn the fan, just like when you blow air through a pinwheel or small fan. Newer aircraft use an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) built into the aircraft to supply power to systems when the engines are shut down and to start the engines, older aircraft use a Ground Power Unit (GPU) built into a surface vehicle to do the same jobs. If the engines are started at the gate they are probably using GPU, if you are pushed back and the engines started out on the ramp they probably use APU.
