Rano Air snackbox is more than what I got on an INTERNATIONAL flight from Houston to Toronto. Being an Aussie, we are used to getting at least a filling meal & a sugary drink flying international. Sydney to Auckland is only 2 hours but I've got delicious banquets on those flights. But 5 hours Houston to Toronto & United wouldn't even give me a muffin or a packet of chips. Barely got enough softdrink to keep me awake on the flight & coffee was non-existent & I had to buy my snacks using ONLY my credit card; which I WASN'T going to do converting AU$ to US$ for a US$10 packet of chips & a US$5 can of Cola. Especially when I had cash in my wallet. Nice one Rano Air, only a 90min domestic flight & you gave some snacks to beat the hunger with; NICE!

20:22 a lot of people in Kano and northern Nigeria are muslims, so the 747s are used to fly people to Saudi Arabia for hajj and umrah. Air Saudia does the same as well and fly to Kano during hajj times. Edit: 25:10 I didn't see your answer when I commented this.

The 747s are for Hajj flights to Saudi Arabia (charters). This year they transported nearly 25,000 pilgrims and officials. In Nigeria, Hajj flights are subsidised by the government. In 2024 Air Peace and Flynas (Saudi) were also used for Hajj. Not all flights leave from Kano.

Cahill is absolutely right when talking about how Nigeria can dominate and be a msaaive player on the world stage. Look at the gulf Arab countries living in wealth because of their oil, Nigeria has so much oil as well but because of corruption, the money generated isn't being used efficiently. I know that the gulf Arab countries don't have Nigeria's massive 200+ million population to deal with but at least their oil money goes into important things like infrastructure.

Nigeria’s growing culture of employed individuals resorting to begging is alarming. It reflects systemic issues like low wages, underemployment, and a distorted sense of entitlement. While communal support is part of our identity, it’s being abused, undermining personal dignity and self-reliance. We must tackle this with better wages, job security, and a shift in mindset. Begging should never replace hard work or self-respect. It’s time for us, as a society, to prioritize empowerment over dependency. We need to do better.

Hi Josh, been an avid watcher of your videos for some time now, but had to post a reaction to this one. I am Dutch and lived in Kano for 3 years in the 2000s. I have been an avgeek since a young child, but flying in Nigeria was (and still is?) not for the fainthearted. As you mention, airlines come and go in Nigeria. The 2000s were the years with exotic airlines like Albarka Airlines, ADC Airlines, IRS, Sosoliso, Bellview and then Virgin Nigeria. VK - Virgin Nigeria started with Bulgarian A320s operating the trunk route ABV-LOS and were at points the only airline (with Aerocontractors) deemed safe enough for foreign staff - despite the arduous and dangerous car drive from Kano to Abuja. Nonetheless I flew many times on Bellview’s classic 737-200, IRS airlines on the F28 or F100 and later on VK’s or Arik Air’s 737-300. The original Lagos domestic terminal burnt down in a fire in the early 2000s. The new MMA2 in Lagos only opened in 2009 or so. For most of the 2000s the Lagos domestic was an upgraded shed. The old international terminal in Kano was the filthiest place on earth - but fortunately had direct flights to Amsterdam on KLM. Wonderful times! But the 2000s were also the years of the horrific crashes of ADC airlines flight 053 in Abuja, Sosoliso flight 1145 in Port Harcourt and Bellview flight 210 that crashed in a thunderstorm north of Lagos. Safety was breached all over the place - power cuts were frequent and not only the terminal would go dark - also ATC would go off for minutes till somebody switched off the generator. Great to see some shots of Kano again - but as others have remarked: you should have headed to the Prince Hotel this was (and still is?) the best hotel in town. I look forward to the rest of your African tours: I just flew ET to Addis and was not impressed, the return on SV was much better. And for wish lists: maybe you should consider a DRC trip at some point? I was in Kinshasa/FIH a few months back - reminded me of Nigeria…
