not sure yet, currently waiting for the X modell but also for firmware updates just to see what panasonic can furhter improve here... i read that it still switches back to dfd in certain recording modes so atm im not sure if i might skip the S5 II and II x completely and wait for an S1 II wich hopefully will have some sort of 4k120 , i mean common, A7S3 came out literally years ago and has it and right now it looks to me like the S5 II cant handle it because its using the same old and quite slow sensor readout but yeah, like i said, curios to see what panasonic will update via firmware.

Great video... As an S5 owner, I think I need to remember that it's the same image! I absolutely love my S5, and Sam's S5 II walkthrough actually helped me learn a few techniques to use with the OG S5 - an absolute steal now the S5 II is out... I bought mine last year in the UK for £1k body only, and I was hyped!

It's actually not the same image. Outside of v-log, the picture profiles are arguably worse. BUT, the 6k open gate is incredible and I've been having a ton of fun with it

@@jayjayjaythebrand I received my S5 ii last friday and that is the least that can be said! Open gate and 5,9k are better yes but not as good as the S1 because there is details filtering in low light .I had already seen some examples before buying the S5 ii but it was even worse when I've compared the camera myself with my S1. I don't know if I must return the camera, I love love the new stabilization and the new autofocus but the IQ is not as good as the S1.

@@jayjayjaythebrand Right, Cine-D's tests have shown that the S5 has (slightly) better IQ than the S5II in most cases. But I'm 100% with you that the new features & quality of life upgrades are worth it for me. I went from S5 to an X-T4, and just now bought the S5II. This is coming from a solo filmmaker perspective, where I'm sometimes having to run multiple angles by myself. The S5 original is still an amazing camera, especially at the price point. Things are looking up for Panasonic and L-mount.

As someone who only points the camera away from me, the S5 works fine. I own numerous vintage lenses that offer a less clinical rendering for video, and contrast AF is plenty snappy enough for stills. Also, some deals have meant the S5 is almost half the launch price of the Mk II when extra lenses, grips and batteries are taken into account. That said, when prices settle down (my S5 was significantly cheaper than at launch a few months earlier) phase detect AF is clearly the way forward for L-mount and vlogging.

I think Lumix have smashed it out of the park with this release. They’ve fixed all of the issues that everyone complained about with this system, and I do think that eventually all Lumix shooters will be using the new gen stuff. Not sure if you’ve seen the CineD lab tests on the S5ii? Might sway some video purists to stick with the S5 or the S1/S1H. It’s minor, but seems that the image processing just isn’t quite as good on the S5ii and there is some added sharpening/processing going on. That said I can’t imagine it will ever be noticeable for most people. I’m suddenly considering a used S1 as I’ve been shooting a lot of multi aspect ratio content recently which has been driving me a bit crazy, ha, and I’d like the option of 6K open gate.

I kind of just “fell into” an S5 w/ Sigma 45mm f2.8 and a shutter count of 0 for $1000 with all the original packaging. I’m a Canon guy (APS-C rebel & 70D), but this is my first full frame that isn’t an old manual film camera (Canon F-1) so now have a whole slew of terminology I’ve never dealt with before I get to learn. (Example: I’ve never heard of “shutter angle” before) Admittedly, I’d never even heard of the S5 till I stumbled across this “used” camera. Couple of hours of furious reading and I learned all I needed to pull the trigger. Looking forward to learning all the things.

Great video as usual Josh 👍 I use my 9 year old DSLR and pixel 6 for hybrid work. My work is predominantly social media content, so its very often very fast and very little planning involved. So having good AF will enable me to grab clips ( especially people interacting) that I wouldn't be able to get by manually focusing. Im a bit puzzled why people say professional videographers dont use AF.

For that use case it's defo worthwhile. I think MF is just more trustworthy for paid gigs, and although I've now started to use AF on some of my paid shoots, I still do like to switch to manual focus as I feel like I ultimately have more control over my shot :)

I have both and I'm shocked at how so many reviews say the image is the same. The orignial S5 has some clear differences. The color is totally different. I can tell right away this was shot on the S5ii as it has much more yellow and green tones vs the S5. I have the S5, the S1, and the S1ii. It's not a dealbreaker by any means, but it seems weird that it isn't pointed out more. I mean this comparison shows it clear as day - kzbin.info/www/bejne/maGaf4xno8-Va5I&ab_channel=CameraOfChoice Also some minor points are there, like HLG is MUCH more sharpened in camera on the S5ii than the S5. Reducing sharpen to -5 vs 0 on the orignal S5 definitely helps.

The s5 does have a 6k mode that I believe is open gate but (and it’s really huge but) it’s only for 30seconds with no audio. If you use the 6K burst mode with vlog as the picture profile you can get a 6K mp4. However it is an mp4 and you do have to hold the shutter like you’re taking burst photos. Again it’s not that great but always worth knowing.

Per the B&H website: 6K and 4K Video Recording In addition to stills, the S5 IIX sports highly capable video recording assets. Full-frame 6K30p recording with 4:2:0 10-bit color can be captured for up to 30 minutes, while unlimited video recording is possible when filming in DCI and UHD 4K60p 4:2:2 10-bit mode. Love my S5, still no compelling reason to upgrade even after the new v3.0/v2.0 upgrade for the S5ii/IIX. I've spent years perfecting my manual focus focus pulls from the GH4 on up to the S series full frame. Running in MF with excellent follow focus setup, I an assure 100% focus results every single time with no pulsing. For those that know the 6K Photo hack, both 3:2 open gate (5183x3456) and 4:3 open gate modes (4992x3744) are possible, although 15 minute limits and H.265 200Mbps bitrate. I already own an Atomos Ninja V plus Atomos Connect, so Camera-to-Cloud I have that and more proxies choices than even the S5 IIX. Also the S5 II (with RAW license) and the S5 IIX do not offer any newer RAW modes than the OG S5. With my gimbal, the new electronic stabilization is also not a need. Granted, the S5IIX can do a lot more with less weight, but I already own all this kit and it's fully paid for. Bring on the S1H II with 8K and 50MP sensor with very low rolling shutter and I'll be interested.

for example on mpb you can find S5 at 1K easily now . I bought it (used for 1.3k) in may 2022. i do feel the AF is worth to upgrade tho. So im gonna wait s5 IIX . Specially if you are operating on gimbal with AF is very important . even with some native , the pulsing you have on AF is horrible. (and 85 mm lumix is one of their best lens AF.) Plus don't say that raw/pro res is s5 advantage. since its normal to wait for upgrade . as all new cameras you need to wait upgrade from camera raw or braw . IF you totally switch yeh go S5 II . as S5 owner its hard to choose , since its rather the same things , its all about the NEW AF. its great you are milking out the S5 II content, since before you were one of few doing videos on s5 tips. and now they finally open their eyes on their atrocious AF and how badly it affects their camera's release.
@JoshCameron
@JoshCameron Жыл бұрын
Yeah the gimbal situation is definitely easier now as I don’t need to add a servo focus motor etc, I agree! I will still be making loads of content for the S5, it’s not the end of that camera for me! Just with the release of the S5ii I think it’s been quite good to discuss the new camera and what direction lumix have moved in 👏🏻 Thanks for watching dude!

@@JoshCameron I mean S5 was most likely a budget option alternative instead of sony, and for us panasonic user = GH5 fullframe. I remember last month using my gh5 (its been like 1 year without using it) damn this was such a killer (paired with my 25 0.95 or 18-35 ) Now it seems that it's going to seduce even sA7s3 Users . seeing by your videos GOOD af better IBIS than sony . half budget (new). I wanted to sell my S5 right now but since s5IIX is going to be release way later than s5 II i dunno. + there is like 10 S5 around 1K-1K2 on mpb.... so For people who wants a good bcam or good 1rst cam and they have tight budget , they should focus on that. I'm not a AF lover (since i most likely use MF ) but when you had a sony or even my old 6D mk2 (i use for photos) has better AF than s5 (i mean even my old 750D.) i miss so much big important shots (at esport event ) because it pulse and then just go out of focus (when you have to be on a chair to try to shoot higher with gimbal and can't mf).

That is the exact reason Ive ordered the S5iiX, gimbal work has become more common for me and I had the S5 miss focus during a walk down the aisle for a wedding. Don't normally shoot my gimbal work on auto on the S5 but the walk started earlier than I had expected so I had to quickly get framed up and shooting. Once I got back and checked that shot and how badly it missed focus I just thought screw it. Im grabbing an S5iix, S5 can become a B camera and my GH5 now a C camera.

@@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 exactly , what im operating 70% on MF. but i miss what would have been one of my greatest shots. WHen i went to Cologne CSGO 2022(one of best csgo finals) and the constant changing lights at the moment where players make their entrance or to lift trophy. Keep pulsating to a point it stop focusing(out of focus ) i had to constantly half press to make it refocus the way i want. but this time the gimbal was up in the air to overpass people crowd. and yeah you go it COMPLETLY missed ! i feel sorry for people who have the gh6 tho. since its a brillant camera but without the new af(wich makes a gh5 overboosted, i would still prefer it over fx30)

The S5 II will be great if you want to hand the camera to your friend to take videos of you. Even if he is not a good videographer you know things will be in focus. I have the S5 I and I like that I will learn on it and maybe it will force me to adapt and understand how focusing works so that if and when I get a second body I will reap all the benefits it provides. In addition I am really curious what the S1 II will be. If it offers a flip out screen and a better sensor and processor for 500$ more - maybe this will be my second body. The good thing for S5 I owners is that they can wait. They still have an amazing camera!

NOTE to 1080 50\60 users !!! no PDAF... only DFD. Hey all, There have been a surprising number of questions regarding PDAF utilization when shooting FHD. This is the info that I have directly from Lumix that I can share. I know nothing else at the time: 1.) FHD with Full Image Area switches to Contrast DFD for 50/60p only. 2.) FHD with Full Image Area in 24,25,30p are all using PDAF. (Sorry, I told someone otherwise recently, but this is the correct ifno). 3.) All other image area options (Pixel / Pixel and APS-C) in FHD are PDAF at all 24,25,30,60p. 4.) No matter what the image area is, anything over 60fps uses DFD. 4.) When shooting in any of the 6K resolutions (16x9, 17:9, 3:2 etc) - PDAF is always used. When HDMI is plugged in, Subject Detection is lost, however. This doesn't mean that you can't get good results tracking things / people in 6K with HDMI plugged in though. You could, for example, set it to 1-Area, make the AF Area medium sized and in the center, and then keep your subject in the center. I haven't experimented with this, but I'd like to!

Lumix S5-2 is as of today the best photo camera for its price in circulation. Period. And the S5X that will come out in May/June will even surpass that. With a proper firmware for the autofocus which, as I can see, still has some minor flaws, this two cameras will make a slaughter in 2023. Other companies better step up, and soon.
