Frankly the value with the Avata 2 is off the charts. You get a camera that will go toe to toe with GoPro, very good digital stabilization, long flight time (for FPV), the best transmission system, very good goggles, head tracking and a decent motion controller for the cost of an entry point into basically any FPV kit. I understand that its DJI and comes with their rules & limitations, but dang they make a great value proposition if you just want to get out and fly and not build/tinker.

I started flying RC in 2011, and waited 12 years to start FPV. (because I like to start with the less fun experience and work my way up). The last two months I was finally gonna get in to FPV, started doing research. Ordered the 03 unit to start converting some of my planes to FPV. Then I got the betafpv aquilla 16 as a training drone. Then they release the avata 2! It was a no brainer. I picked the absolute best time to get in to FPV! Today I am picking up my avata 2 after having flown the Aquilla 16 for a week now. It's gonna be AMAZING! Yes the DJI restrictions will be annoying as fuck, but like you said ... all of this for about a 1000 euros? Not to long ago they told me if I build something with all these capabilities, headtracking, gps, return to home, etc etc. They said it would cost at least 3000 dollars. And now I am getting all of this for a 1000 euros and I don't risk fucking things up by having to sodder. This avata 2 is gonna bring more people in to FPV then ever before, mark my words!

As a big fan of avata 1, I just ordered the avata 2. It is like with the dji mini 3 to dji mini4 upgrade. The specs do not change much but overall, products just get better. It is also good when flying a drone a lot to refresh the battteries after all these many flights. I expect the avata 2 with the new googles to have a better range. I had never upgraded the firmware of the avata 1 googles because after that, I would had been required to tether it with the phone which is annoying. Now, with the avata 2, remote ID is built in so that no phone tetheringwill be necessary.

Honestly, this actually looks like a good starting FPV drone. I won't lie, the flight looks really rough. It's super underpowered and very janky. But the fact that you can switch to a more automatic and "stable" flight mode would have saved me so much when I just started learning how to fly and I kept crashing into the ground after losing orientation. I've spent so much money in the beginning on replacement parts/drones that buying this would have actually be much much cheaper. Amazing how far we came, from basically cringing every time someone confused my FPV drones with a DJI, to the point where I'll actively recommend people who are new to this hobby to buy a DJI drone first. @@JDDupuy It was pretty bad dude. And no fault of the Avata guys since they couldn’t help it except to not fly. The flying style was very twitchy and constant direction changes. I loved it, My stomach was unsure. Knowing absolutely less than nothing of this subject matter, I still feel like I learned a lot here. When you were trying to describe how it's different, how it flies and pint towards its direction of flight, it struck me POW - not like that, lol - that HAVING A POINTABLE, MOVABLE camera adds a dimension that yes, adds complexity to people who can least manage it - but for YOU TOO as a high flight hours, highly experienced traditional FPV Pilot, you know? I am not able to evaluate whether it's better, worse, or whatever, just a notable different thing, I think for filmers, it's a good thing. I have no ability to tell what it does for Flyers.

So, for longer ranges out in the mountains which i like to do, the aid for the line of sight that the new goggles provide is going to be much usefull. Hey Joshua, C1 means that the Drone is certified to be flown by Pilots with the „small drone license“ C1. It must have a valid UAS-User-ID on a small and fireproof plate that has to be installed on the outside, even though it has to be saved to the software that the drone is running! Next thing: the pilot needs an insurance, that would be responsible if you were causing any kind of damage with that drone. This is obligatory to all drones that are having a weight between 250-900 grams. Since the new drone EU drone regulation of 2021, most quads fell under the transitional regulations of this new law, but from 01. January 2024 it is causing obligation to be conform with the law, based on the weight of the drone. The UAS-operator-ID, which I talked about is an ID, that is assigned by the aviation authority of the corresponding country, where the pilot is from. It is free to get the EU drone proof of competence and only needs success in a test which includes a couple of questions about handling drones and flying safely in combination with the regulations of distance to houses, aircraft’s etc. The document is valid for five years! I hope that I have expressed myself clearly enough and that it is now somewhat clear to you what the drone regulations look like in the EU. Regards, Alex

19:20 I wish DJI would allow using the C2 for gimbal pre-adjustments. It's either going all the way up or down. :( It would've been especially useful in M mode where I just want to suddenly fly slower or in reverse. Currently, all the way up or down is almost useless. Thanks for covering this part, it was hard to find any other video that covers it as much as you do! excellent video!

I wish there were options like the sim pits people are using for DCS, but for radio controlled aircraft, even quadcopters. Thrustmaster TPS rudder controls, control stick, and throttle control...paired with FPV. That seems way more interesting than the traditional radio transmitter controller sticks.

DJI: if you would like one of our DRONES, pay us $1000+ so we can quickly make your DRONE obsolete by introducing your DRONE’s successor which will not be compatible with your controller, headset, battery, nor any other accessories on which you have spent $thousands.

I once used a Wi Nunchuck to control a RC helicopter. The yaw control was the same as with this new DJI controller. Angling the Nunchuck up and down was throttle control. The joystick on the Nunchuck, behaved the same as the right joystick on a mode 2 controller. It's interesting to see this take on a one handed controller. I found using the Nunchuck awkward myself. I think have a some sort of throttle control would really improve a one handed controller. Thanks for the review JB.

Hey, PotatoJet was told by DJI that it should only be a MONTH before a firmware update to support goggles 2, motion controller 2, and FPV controller 2! Hopefully the same update will bring backwards support to the goggles 3

I don't know if anyone has realized this yet but these are NOT standard T-mount props. The shaft in the center is too large to fit standard T-mount props, as are the included screws for some reason. Maybe if you were super good with a drill you could drill out the center hole and, assuming you managed to keep it centered, it would work...

Well if I am not mistaken you completely missed the fact that it can now fly indoors with no GPS which before was impossible with the motion controller as it had to be in manual mode.

There is a possibility that the cameras in the front are also used for the head tracking, so is not drifting over time since it is IMU based. A lot of VR/AR goggles do that for head tracking so why not also DJI

Great video and great area to fly in. I bet you can get some awesome scenery shots, especially fall foliage right from your porch. I'm still a camera drone guy, but fighting the avata / FPV urge. Seriously, you need to take that Avata 2 out on a particularly colorful sunset there, get some good shots in raw, then drop the DJI lut on your footage, maybe tweak colors a little, and it will be amazing. That has the same sensor now as my Air 3.

- O4 Air unit when? - Does the Avata 2 have onboard audio? (might indicate that it's possible in the coming air unit, O3 didn't despite G2s having audio out :( ) - Goggles 3 to O3 Air unit compatibility?

The other person who should buy it is the one that wants to introduce the idea of FPV piloting to other non-pilots. I bought an original DJI FPV drone (the "potato") and the vast majority of flight time it's had is with other people piloting it. My dad, sisters, couple cousins, a neighbor kid, and good friend of mine have all piloted it. I can set em loose in normal mode with the motion controller and pretty much not worry about them at all (I tell em to fly over the top of powerline poles rather than between them, and that's it). My dad and friend have both gotten to fly in Sport mode and even do some chase/formation flying with my fixed wing plane up to 60mph.
@dave8825 ай бұрын
Might just buy one of these only to use the motion control mode. That looks so slick. Can’t wait till we can replace the goggles with some AR glasses that look less nerdy and you could take this thing out anywhere

Finally a proper avata. I got the original avata to replace the FPV racer (the potato) and i was disappointed on its performance and noise level. yes i have like 12 built drones. but i want something that has a working gimbal and reliable rth. but as of now, the best thing is to wait for backwards compatability.

Hello. Great review. Are the new goggles compatible with the 03 air unit?
@nagamus5 ай бұрын
They're not.
@jsvn13575 ай бұрын
Point regarding the zoomed in live view: The live feed isn't "zoomed in", it's exactly how we see the world, just cropped by the goggle display fov(45° display vs 180° human eyes - 4x cropped). They also couldn't just zoom out the camera feed, since it would change the perceived focal length(visual area covered per unit degree) and make us nauseated. This is because they're trying to do 3D live feed with side-by-side camera configuration. Basically DJI is stuck with this degree-of-vision coverage until they either increase the display fov, or make the live feed 2d (just like the air unit video feed). Also, regarding the head tracking, I think dji omitted it for standard remote since they thought it would be "counterintuitive", in that the remote's yaw input and head tracking's yaw input will fight each other for control unless one of them is disregarded. Head tracking with the motion controller works because the controller's side tilt controlls the "steering" of the drone, which is different from just yaw movement.
@Vousie5 ай бұрын
I, for one would've preferred a single wide-angle camera and just see the same image in both eyes. That won't make anyone nauseated any more than normal FPV flying, and in any case, who cases about getting 3D live view? As for the head tracking, I think if they made head-tracking *only* affect the gimbal pitch angle in the remote controller that would've been really useful already.
@jsvn13575 ай бұрын
I strongly agree with both your points, however DJI seems to have this very Apple-like mindset, where they have to do it perfectly in their own innovative way, or they won't do it at all. Probably 2d live view wasn't innovative enough, and 2dof head movement only controlling 1dof pitch wasn't good enough for them.
@Vousie5 ай бұрын
@@jsvn1357 Or they just didn't care. Decided it wasn't something enough people would want that they'd make the money back they'd spend on making it work. That's always the problem with proprietary stuff - you're stuck with whatever the manufacturer decided the majority of people would like (or, what they decided would make them the most money).
