Analog will remain very popular because it is MUCH cheaper per quad, and I can use ANY analog VTX with my analog goggles. Analog VTX's are also so tiny now (TBS Unify Nano), it is so easy to fit them into any build. There are too many digital FPV offerings, and you need to buy into DJI, or Walksnail, HD Zero etc... and you're stuck with them all the way. No one can agree on what digital setup is best, and having multiple digital googles is not a choice for most people... unless you run a successful KZbin channel or are a professional FPV pilot.

I really think that KZbinrs that thrive off of reviews lose touch with the reality of what this hobby actually costs when they are constantly given things or when they can afford to buy new gear as a business expense. Most of us can afford a new set of goggles maybe every couple of years and the difference in cost between a digital and analog drone, at least in my case, can feed me for a couple of weeks. Josh has added a lot to the hobby and many of his tutorials have helped me immensely over the years but as his videos have become more and more about digital FPV I find myself watching less and less. I spent the money and gave HDZero a good try but I have decided to go back to analog due to the added costs and complexity of digital.
@relo99911 ай бұрын
Same here. Complexity isn't even the issue, it's just cost for me. My Skyzones 04X from 3-ish years ago were 400, a given drone of mine is already 100~150 euro doubling the price of a drone and either adding another 200 (or replacement at around 350 on the cheapest) to my goggles is quite frankly crazy. It nearly double the cost of the hobby if I'd go digital on the cheap and it's not like I use particularly budget equipment. Compared to my first setup going digital on the cheap it'd more than triple the cost. I feel increasingly there being a rift between full professional equipment and hobbyist gear while the professional equipment is sold as hobbyist gear.

Frankly, there is just not as much interesting content to make about analog. What is there to say? What has changed? Occasionally a new camera will come out. I reviewed the Foxeer Reaper 2.5W when it released, and the Solo Max. Those were interesting. The new Caddx Ratel Pro looks interesting. But for the most part, very little has changed in analog, and so it's not that interesting to me to make new content about it. The unfortunate reality is that the majority of people in FPV now are using digital. Digital bnf outsell analog by 2:1 or more. The numbers for my beginner build kit are similar. When I did a sub-$200 build video, I used analog (obviously). When I reviewed the Flywoo Baby Nano and the Dragonfly, I included an analog version in the comparison. I have full analog vTX install and setup instructions in my Beginner Build video. There is plenty of analog content on my channel. But the reality is that there are now four main video systems: analog, DJI, Walksnail, and HDZero, and even if you were to weight them by user-base, that means the days when analog got 100% of the air-time are gone.
@lemonsquareFPV11 ай бұрын
@@JoshuaBardwellyou are right on analog marketability. It’s a well established and tested thing that doesn’t need much coverage. The only novel recent stuff I can think of are OpenVTX (where I am actually flashing new firmware on an analog VTX) and MSP control. BNFs and kits are not a good thing to judge the market though. For hobby use; analog systems out ship all digital systems 2:1 If you add the current military bullshit we are shipping an over 4:1 analog system ratio, depending on month.
@Vaeloron11 ай бұрын
@@JoshuaBardwell I apologize if the original remark came off more negative than it seemed. I agree with everything you said about digital. It is hard to find analog content among any of the FPV KZbinrs and it is indeed due to a market shift so regardless of my opinion it is not in the control of the reviewers if there is nothing to review in he analog world. Trying to find analog BNF's is getting harder and harder unfortunately as well so I am finding myself drifting more towards fixed wing FPV at this point. I think if someone wanted to really break the market they would need to offer goggles with both digital and analog built in from the factory and do it at a price point that does not require a second mortgage. If a company could come out with a quality goggle under $300 that could do digital and analog then, aside from selling out instantly, it would change the hobby forever.

I am actually slowly converting my HDZero fleet back to analog. I have had the HDO2's with the HDZero module for a couple of years now but I am just not happy with the extra weight, cost, and battery usage and the range still just can't seem to touch analog. I also hated dealing with the two separate power cords when I wanted to fly HDZero. I have even put my HDO2's in mothballs in favor of the Fatshark Scout. I think that there are still benefits to analog that may not be able to be overcome. I have some analog VTX's that are literally the size of my thumbnail that use very little power. Even at low transmit powers digital VTX's pull a lot of power for the video processing. The power draw of digital on small drones has a noticeable impact to flight times. My opinion might be different if the HDZero goggles were not so stupidly expensive.

Here's something that might be an interesting note for others that have farsightedness. I've been running the original 04 X for the last 3 years, and I'm a plus 1.75 in both eyes. It says that it's plus two on the far end of the focal adjustment range, except I'm at the very edge of what I can dial in as perfectly in focus. The issue is, as the foam surround begins to deteriorate, the Optics actually get closer to your eyeballs, and then your focal adjustment range becomes lessened. And for me, I do get the corners of the screen chopped off when I'm in perfect focus, because I need the surround to hold the goggles far enough away from my eyes, or else I can't stay in focus. I don't notice it much anymore, but I also can't put OSD elements in the top or bottom corners. These looks great, but I'm not interested in Walksnail, so I think I'm going to upgrade to HDZero goggles, which just happens to go all the way to a +6 focal adjustment. 🙂

Please HELP Question I just jumped into FPV with the Avata 2 so I have their DJI Goggles 3 and their DJI their controller but I found out real quick (maybe 10 flights in is your worst crash is when you get cocky) ANYWAY I would really like to start doing my own Builds do you think For the Price to I switch to Analog so i can practice more? To me that sounds counter productive because I already have their goggles and controls so would i be better just buying their O3 flight controller stack that they started selling and just find the cheapest spare parts that means each new build would be at least $230 because that's what they charge you for the all in one stack with camera and antenna makes sense for me to just get that and try to keep the rest of the build under $70, Should I go with option 1 or 2 if you say 1 can you recommend a good radio controller, plus goggles that would be the best bang for your buck but I dont have a lot lol Thank you for your time
@brandon96896 ай бұрын
As of right now you can't even use the 03 unit with the Goggles 3 if you wanted to. They work with the Avata 2 and like 2 other non FPV drones until DJI decides to update them.
@rubberonasphalt5 ай бұрын
Brandon is correct. You can't use DJI Goggles 3 with DJI O3 air unit anyway. My advice is to get an FPV simulator and practice there first. DJI has a simulator that you can practice with, when you connect your DJI controller to a PC/ Laptop. You can try to learn on a real quad, but you're going to crash... A LOT... Even people who flies DIY drones, practice first in simulators like 'Liftoff' or 'Tryp FPV', so they get better skills in flying

@@rubberonasphalt I can see DJI is the future as of right now no other company has every FPV website in the ad showing DJI goggles So I'm parrying its a matter of time I think the ban is slowing it down a little but it should be pushed soon even if they don't come out and start selling their new O4 Air Unit in the Avata 2 (Which from day one IMO they were stupid not to release the O4 at the same time) I acutely found a descend deal on ebay for $400 I got a Hobby Mate d6 charger bran new 10 1300mah 4s batteries along with Frsky(Upgrading to RM Boxer ELRS its in the mail atm) Vortex 250 Pro (Which flys like shit it cant even hover with no wind and im scared to plug it into beta Flight and the Goggles that came with it was Fat Shark Dom V3 Their ok but I saw the Goggles the chargers and battery as the prize I was mainly after the goggles so I can start my own builds now for Hobbies side but Their is no question no Doubt for the MAJORITY of people they can use the Avata 2 and get great FPV fun and shots and if you are really good like me you do dives and SpltS invert all day long lol

i got into fov back in like 2016? 2017? and i kinda left it for a long time due to the costs, now im tryna get back in and everything feels much more complex, but can i ask what are the pros and cons between analog and digital? im still skeptical about digital being high latency, im probably still gonna go with analog because of the price and because im still stuck in the past, but whats digital like against analog?
@rubberonasphalt5 ай бұрын
FPV is not really more complex now, just new stuff that you haven't experienced yet For digital like DJI, the first time you look through the goggles, you're going to say "Wow!". Because the image is so clear and crisp. You can see objects so much more clearly, and color is really beautiful compared to analog. You also don't get image breakups as often on digital. The image clarity is pretty much the main difference between digital and analog and why people like it. I have both, and while I do enjoy digital, I still fly analog. Stick to analog, nothing wrong with that. But if you ever get curious about digital, look on 2nd hand markets for cheaper DJI goggles and VTXs. I see people selling them all the time on Facebook Market, so it won't take long to find a deal if you're patient and keep looking

Interesting that you and the other two reviewers I’ve seen go over these state -2 ~ +6 diopter adjustment. However Skyzones website states -6 ~ +2. As a -5.5 this is a big difference! Hopefully Skyzone is correct as I’ve got a pair otw 👍 I was still rocking the EV800D’s and want to go all the way Analog with a side of Walksnail. These seem to be the best game in town for my needs.

@@вечная_мерзлота what are you doubting ? All Ukrainian front now uses analog fpv for kamikaze, bombers , planes . Etc . Interception doesn’t matter as it’s useless , everyone can see how drone makes Fmeatball from orcs or exploding ruzzian tanks/vehicles / troops. Thousands of drones daily with analog FPV. Because of that there is lower bands video, non standard bands used . Not to hide but improve distance and expand video capacity .

A digital VTX and camera are the most expensive things on a custom builds and they nearly double the price of a BnF. If you're a KZbinr who is getting stuff handed to them that cost holds no bearing, but to actual real people though... Especially if you are doing risky stuff like long range or bando bashing. Until I can replace a digital VTX and camera for less than $80(the cost of a high end analog VTX and camera) than I'm not going to make the switch. Edit: Also want to remind Bardwell that HD-Zero is open and someone like Skyzone could very well make an external HD-Zero external VRX that is fully compatible with their goggles. Hell Carl could up and decide to revise the external VRX.
@Vaeloron11 ай бұрын
It seems that this money is no object take is pervasive among KZbinrs that are frequently given things to review. This isn't even a specific issue to FPV KZbinrs. I think that for all of the helpful information that Josh provides he has fallen into the same trap where he has lost touch with the true cost of this hobby. Most of us can afford a new pair of goggles maybe every couple of years. It also seems like the difference between an analog and digital BNF is typically around $100 which is a hard pill to swallow.

You said that the HDzero not doing 90 fps on the goggles was due to the standalone receiver not outputting 90 fps, isn’t that something that could be fixed with an updated standalone receiver?
@JoshuaBardwell11 ай бұрын
Hypothetically, yes, but HDZero has not given any indication they plan to do that.

@@JoshuaBardwell right so the issue isn't with the goggles themselves it is with the HDzero standalone receiver.

Keep in mind the walksnail vrx doesn’t currently output 100fps in racemode. The 100hz screens are therefore really just for standard 100fps walksnail. It’s otherwise completely pointless compared to the 04X V2’s 60hz screen. Having owned both, you’re better off separating out your goggles. Get the 04X V2 for analog. For walksnail, get walksnail goggles. Even the old walksnail goggles which are really cheap now are better than the vrx. And by the time you look at the cost of the vrx and extra cost of the pro, it’s hardly any more expensive to get 2 sets of goggles.

One thing that you don’t mention as an advantage but clearly demonstrate is that paired with the Goggles X, you can have wired audience mode that doesn’t have reduced bit rate like some systems and has the advantage of retransmitted packets. This would give an experience more like what it’s like to actually fly than the real audience mode.

The price tag though... ive never known an industry like this one where you can release a practically outdated bit of hardware and charge in line with the most recent tech... its frustrating for budget consumers! I struggle to justify the cost to get away from my Sky02s but i desperately want to, its just insane prices whatever route i take.
@Vaeloron11 ай бұрын
I agree. I think that box goggles have developed a stigma due to the market being saturated with low quality offerings but a well made box goggle in the 100 to 200 dollar range can actually be quite good even compared to some of the high end OLED goggles.
@JoshuaBardwell11 ай бұрын
Everybody is annoyed that analog FPV goggle price doesn't come down, because the goggles don't change very much for years at a time. But why would the price come down? The micro-display in the goggle is an extremely niche product, usually intended for camera viewfinders. They are bought in extremely small quantities. The OLED micro-display optics module in these goggles probably costs $200-$250 from the manufacturer to Skyzone. I would guess the BOM cost for these goggles to be around $350. So when they sell them for $500, that's actually a pretty reasonable profit margin. As long as cost to manufacture stays high, price to the consumer will stay high. Old tech only gets cheaper when 1) there is a huge surplus of last-gen stuff that has to be gotten rid of, and 2) when manufacturing of the old tech gets cheaper as a result of advancements in manufacturing. Neither of those things are happening with FPV goggles.
@Vaeloron11 ай бұрын
I think part of the problem here is that we lost the middle of the market years ago. There used to be a lot of mid-tier goggles on the market. Now, with a few exceptions, we are finding either trash box goggles from Amazon. Or high end OLED goggles. Now we are at risk of losing the bottom of the market entirely which will keep a lot of fresh blood out of the hobby completely.
