Videos like this is something the community as a whole needs. I can't call something like this content. A lot of the complaints people have with yugioh and how they should get better or how they should approach the game is never answered often enough for them. Being in the FGC, this is beaten into you early on and reaffirmed through coaches, friends, local scenes, and communities. Yugioh players are stuck in this circle jerk with a way out, but no one is listening to the people shouting at them that there is a way out. Yugioh is not just about following a combo path for a deck, its awareness, memorization of the flow of the match, and constant practice. Stuff that FGC players who strive to do better and work on in order to get to that higher level if they so wish to go for that journey. Know when to hold your cards, fold your cards, or simply just wait for the right opportunity. Sometimes not doing a single thing is far stronger than doing everything. I hope to honestly see more videos like this from Josh, but from others too. Cause a shift in the approach of this game would be healthy for the base who continue to play it despite Konami making it suck so much.

The only thing you can do is make yourself comfortable in any given format by playing as much as you can. If you suspect foul play, stay calm, slow down, read their cards and understand what is happening. If you catch a mistake, CALMLY explain what is wrong to your opponent. If they resist, raise your hand and call for a judge, but never lose your cool. If your opponent is horrible and unsporting never ever stoop to their level, just calmly call for a judge. All these are easier said than done of course, but if you want to improve and see results, that's the work required.

Great video and very informative. Really nice straightforward, honest, and clear feedback. I love the part about mentally resetting after making a mistake. If you keep finding you are getting stuck in the loop of mistake after mistake in-game, you either have to completely change the way you approach the game from a personal standpoint, play lots of different decks more, or best case both. Those moments should really be something you learn from too. People never forget the first time they play into the Imperm column and it informs their play so much as a learning experience. You just have to have the patience to understand that a "in the moment bad feeling" is good for your personal growth in the long term.

7:59 I feel like this is a very underrated line of thought, and I feel like people playing easier decks with a similar ceiling to more complicated decks is a lot of the reason why retro formats tend to shape differently as retros than they did historically. A good example I bring up a lot is Traptrix vs Labrynth during Kashtira format. I am solidly of the opinion that Traptrix had a much higher ceiling than Labrynth, but only in the hands of a skilled pilot, while Labrynth didn't take as much deck or matchup knowledge to clutch a win. And that's not to say "Traptrix is better than Labrynth", that's saying that Labrynth has an actual corporeal advantage over Traptrix, because it takes much less preparation and testing to get good enough to take down an event. You can say the same thing about loads of decks historically, like Dark World during Fire/Water format or Blackwings in Edison.

12:35 I had my best tournament performances ever playing in early snake eye format using voiceless voice. I knew I didn’t have mental energy to snake eye combo all day but I learnt the decks lines well enough that knew where to hit their deck well enough to give myself a chance even if I only drew one hand trap. Was sad actually I threw more games that season to non-snake eye decks than I did against snake eye 😂

I liked the tail end portion of different tells and strategies for specific decks. I think that a “deck exposed” series would do well. Like an inside the mind of a “insert deck” player and you go over test hands and say in this format if this is the hand and I see or don’t see this, then this is what probably is going to happen or this is the best available during every few formats

Its super cool this popped up for me, im getting ready for my first tournament on Saturday, but am struggling with what deck i should use in it. I have a maliss deck, battlin boxers, fire kings, crimson king, phantom knights and an ashened deck. Its my first time and i want it to be memorable. Maliss is both op and meta, so im kind of on the line about whether or not i want to use it, im the kind of person that in everything i play, i prefer less mainstream tactics. But i also want to win, so im torn on what to do. Any advice?

thanks for the video, big fun of you joss..i am new to the game. i play for 3 months now, but i have played other card games, so the style of the game was easy for me to understand..the difficult part is that there is 25 years of history in yugioh cards that makes it impossible for me to learn every single card. i have noted that many of my opponents at my community are exploring that fact. they prey in my confusion and in the fact that i dont have time to read everything, resulting in cheating situations. do you have any tips for that kind of scenarios?

MD player here, so I don't know how feasible it is when you play on paper, but I've found that playing regularly is very important. I could spend hours on deck building and that kind of stuff, and then play a couple of games just to realize that things are not working as I thought. In my opinion, the experience of each matchup, hand and overall game that practice gives you is the best preparation you could have.

I've only played in 4 YCS so far, so I might be wrong. But I've noticed that in order to go x-2 in a 12 round swiss tournament, u can't afford any mistake. There will be games u simply can't win because a lots of reason (bricked, opponent drew better etc..), so u must win every game u can win. I missed my top at YCS Lyon 2023 cause I made a HUGE mistake round 7, and lost round 12 that was unwinnable. So me not making top cut is 100% on me. I can't really blame my opponent on having insane tear ishizu mills round 12, when I should have win round 7. I think to top a YCS, u win to spend 2 days without making any mistakes

I feel like style of play is very important in Yu-Gi-Oh. Just because you play snake-eye doesn't mean that's the deck for me. If you are a newcomer in Yu-Gi-Oh you will get asked this question by honest and truthful Yu-Gi-Oh peers. It's important that you play a deck that fits your style. Otk, midrange, ftk, stun, control or ect. Playing with a deck that fits your style will improve your play performance over time. I remember that I was told that you should play the best deck in the format and I said no because that's not my style of play. If a newcomer ever joined Yu-Gi-Oh I would ask him what style of play are you looking for and continue on. I think it's kind of sad that new players come into Yu-Gi-Oh and being told false information. They are being told that you should play with the best deck in the format and you need all these expensive staples to win 😞. This is what causes players to quit Yu-Gi-Oh. There's always cheaper options and cheaper decks that can play in the meta which are anti-meta decks. It's just that people are telling others wrong information about Yu-Gi-Oh. When there is always better ways you can play Yu-Gi-Oh without it being so expensive. This is just my opinion I'm just saying.

@757gamerguy26 күн бұрын
One thing I would add is make sure you put your deck under something heavy. I got forced to drop from a regional bc they deck checked me and accused my cards of being too warped to play as they could be "easily distinguishable in the deck." Of course when I shuffled the deck and asked them to pull out the cards, they had to actyally search the deck for them. So I would make very sure there is nothing even possible for dickhead judges to start nickpicking.
