The first duel is probably one of my favorite, but it is a plot-heavy duel. It literally starts with Reiji forcing Shun to duel in a simulacrum of his home town before it was destroyed by war just to get him angry. Sora becomes increasingly unhinged as Shun keeps finding ways to counter him, letting his mask slip as the hunter becomes frustrated at his prey. When Sora pulls out Frightfur Leo, he has it bodycheck and grind its way through a wall only for Nico Smiley to say "Aren't you being a bit violent?" as Sora plays it off. The two going at each other literally turns Neo Heartland City into a war zone with debris and fire everywhere, shocking the audience. Sora picking Frightfur Chimera to fuse into at the end was absolutely a plot choice. It's the most twisted and evil-looking fusion monster he has and he brings it out right as he admits to the crowd that he enjoys the sport of hunting down other people and goes full psycho. Sora's actions flip the dynamic he and Shun had with the other characters with Shun being more sympathetic and Sora becoming untrustworthy.

Sora not summoning Tiger or Sabre-Tooth on the first duel might've simply been a case of him just not having them at the moment. By the time he does use them, he had already gone back to the Fusion Dimension and the crushing defeat he suffered could've led him to augment his deck. Tiger stands out between all the fusion monsters Sora summons, because it's the only base Frightfur (by that I mean the ones that are only a Flufflal + an Edge Imp) he uses that doesn't have a Fluffal monsters to go with it, there is no Fluffal Tiger, and I think this is a sign that he added it later because he no longer needs to hide who he is, so he doesn't need a cute animal version of his monster.

Hi everyone, RR player here, I must say, during the second duel's first turn shun made multiple huge missplays: - The "infinite" loop of vanishing+fuzzy is great but not optimal as he had 2 singing in hand. If he had used both after the summon of the 1st force strix he could have done the exact same triple force strix set up but also have 2 vanishing lanii on the field. At that point, even with "frightfur designer" Sora wouldn't have been able to survive the strixes assaults. - The third strix's effect could have grabbed him either booster strix which could have destroyed the attacking frightfur or a Avenge Vulture which would have summoned himself upon shun taking any kind of damage to allow him to survive more damage. (both are in his anime deck, even if shown latter he has to have at least some amount of lvl 4 RR in his deck if he plays triple force strix) Knowing how fragile RR are as a deck these 2 missplays are immensly costly even if they seem unconsequential. Also, Neither of these plays require the power of insight, giving shun no excuses to not have done this. Also, also, if shun had used the triple force+double vanishing line he could have kept one of the lanii in def as a safeguard as the triple strix would have done 2100+300+300 = 2700 (due to designer and the edge imp) and the last lanius has 1300 which is exact lethal giving him a form of defense from even blowouts like mirror force! So big missplay to you shun!

@@crocky6996 to be fair the deck plays vastly different in the anime compared to irl. the original deck has no way to search RUMs nor does it have any big monsters. The only one you have is rise falcon and it needs monsters on field to otk, this is why you never see shun negate a polymerisation even if it's the clear chock point, he must let his opponent build a board to then do a reversal on them. With no S/T he's forced to just punch with force strixes which is far from ideal
@crocky6996Ай бұрын
@@hultraspitfire2151 Not only that doesn't improve my impression over the duel, but it also makes me wonder: couldn't he just go second then? If his deck is so reliant of having things to react to, then he should've let Sora take the first turn. @@crocky6996 so this is the anime RR conundrum, you want to go second to otk, yes, but you don't want your opponent to set up interuptions either. Yeah, they just dont play cards that could do such things in other duels and its obviously an episode where they're determined not to use action cards. There’s also a character like Dennis, a Fusion Dimension shy whose archetype uses XYZ monsters, so there are always possibilities. Plus Sora lost because he also underestimated Shun too much because Frightfur Chimera’s anime effect had this included: “When this card attacks or attacked: You can activate this effect; your opponent cannot activate Spell/Trap Cards, until the end of the Battle Phase.” Meaning he would have stopped Shun from even doing anything on the word Go the moment he attacked.

From what I can tell, it seems like Shun used some kind of trap that went something like "When an Xyz monster is destroyed by battle or card effect; special summon its Xyz materials from the graveyard to the field. These monsters cannot be used as Xyz materials." And since he had 2 backrow, it's highly likely he used two of the same trap. Either that, or said face down revived the materials of *all* Xyz monsters destroyed by battle this turn. In terms of why Sora's field state was so strange, I remember that there's a Frightfur card that special summons a Fluffal and an Edge Imp monster, so considering that he hadn't used Mouse's effect yet, I'm guessing that's what it was. I don't remember if he ever had the Frightfur squid, but that would be my best guess as to how he could've destroyed two of the Force Stryx and probably used a trap or something on the other Lanius.

Then this duel happens witch over the course of it just devolves into a straight up battle with the city field being destroyed. Sora starting out as the type of entertainment duelist Yuya strives to be and becoming the person that Shun has known is just awesome. A note on the RUM-Revolution Force: As you pointed out Shun was prepared for everything. Over the course of the series we learn that academia just overwhelmed the Xyz Dimension and thought it was funny what they were doing. 🤔Shay is a great example of how the Heart of the Cards can literally turn the tide of battle. Wasn’t there a duel against 3 Leo Institute students where he boasted that he always wins no matter the odds even though they all had their ace monster, he was missing a lot of LP *and* he had no cards in his hand? Immediately before drawing the one card that couldn’t him the duel his next turn?
@Yojimbo162 ай бұрын
To me, probably the best example of hyper-specific cards would always be "Overlay Award."
@sasir20132 ай бұрын
@@Yojimbo16 that one isn't that bad. It's just a battle phase skip with extra steps that happened to be beneficial in a duel. You just reminded me of a Master Duel match I had. The opponent set Rank up magic Barian the seventh (the one that needs to be drawn on the draw phase to be used) on the top of their deck to draw it on their next turn. I used "Day of peace" which makes it so I draw a card and won't take damage until the end of their turn. The usual downside is that they get to draw a card, making it a plus one for the opponent. Except, in this case... it made the opponent draw in a way that turned their most powerful card into a brick. It was hilarious. Long story short, I had an overlay award experience XD

I have a suggestion for next time: let's go back to the era of GX and Duel Academy to one of the strangest matches we might've seen, and with a bet on the line. Were Prof. Crowler and Bonaparte about to defeat Maximillian Pegasus? This Triangle Battle had a unique set of rules and we were able to see 3 signature decks in action, the Ancient Gears vs. the Toys Soldiers vs. the Toons. If Crowler and Bonaparte were able to work together as a team, from the very beginning, protecting each other and not attacking one another due to hate, would they be able to surprise Pegasus? What are your thoughts about this duel?

THIS was the battle that changed ARC-V and made me love the series. The fact the there were many hints about Shay and Sora in all of the episode prior, but because everyone uses all of the summoning mechanics you think nothing of it. Then the field spell Neo heartland city is played and everything changes. You think oh that's cool they are acknowledging a past series, its been done before. But the crowed act like they never heard of this place which is strange, then Shay's reaction and continued duel with Sora spella it out that there is more to ARC-V then the dueltainment stuff on the surface. And that ARC-Vs place in the Yugioh timeline is warped.
@EthanKironus80672 ай бұрын
Why does everyone assume that Arc-V, and by extension Zexal, has to be in the same contiguous timeline as the original three Yugioh shows? For all intents and purposes Zexal wasn't, the Duel Sanctuary only ever amounted to nice easter eggs in practice. It's fine as a headcanon, but I genuinely don't understand where people are coming from with the assumption that the shows all share a timeline.

@@EthanKironus8067yeah the only ones confirmed are DM and GX (and 5ds if you add bonds beyond time)
@EthanKironus80672 ай бұрын
@@aether6293 5Ds is relatively solid either way, given that Neo Domino is, well, Neo DOMINO, and it's actually canon--though obscurely so, since it was stated in a Japan-only 10th anniversary book or something (which I guess was kind of a BBT thing)--that Ushio, the guy who was Atem's first victim and inadvertently responsible for fostering the seeds of Yugi and Joey's friendship, grows up to be Trudge in 5Ds. People I know pass over that in favour of taking 5Ds as being a long time in the future, which works too. I think it ought to be in the same timeline on the basis of Kazuki Takahashi's involvement if nothing else.
@humam91892 ай бұрын
@@EthanKironus8067they are not literally in one contiguous timeline tho... If you watched a video made by spellcommander101 (I hope I remember the channel's name correctly), there he explained the timelines of all yugioh series In his video, he even explained how zexal came to existence. Just to summarise it, he explained that zexal came from a branch timeline that ylliaster made in 5ds. This is the timeline where momentum and synchro summoning and synchro monsters have already destroyed humankind. Then maybe yusei or someone else found an alternative energy source, which is a mini black hole (that's why you can see a mini black hole when someone overlays their monsters) to get rid of momentum. Then, if I remember it correctly, the standard dimension in arc-V series is the continuation of DM era (I think it is after DSOD). He also explained how other dimensions from arc-V came into existence as well

ARC-V, the show that needed about 50 more episodes to resolve the dozens of loose ends created by the rushed ending of the show. An absolute roller coaster of a show with high highs (like this Duel and others like Jack vs Sergey and Crow vs Shun and Yuri vs the GX Nostalgia and Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon’s debut) but also had really low lows (any time an Action Card was used and how tragically wasted the bracelet girls ended up for example). Definitely one of the weaker shows of the original 6 Yugioh series, even though it had great moments like this Duel

Your content is so engaging and perfect for my walks and hobby work, keep it up! As someone who enjoys the English dubs for all the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, because I am unable to take any part of the Japaense versions remotely seriously (not that I take the show seriously at all mind you), you can just use the Japanese names if that's easier for you. I'm sure you have analytics behind it and if it helps with views, but I think you really only need to do that through 5Ds and maybe Zexal for consistency. I'm an incredibly rare breed and most people will prefer the Japanese version past that point anyways. Regardless, love the content and thanks for the vods channel as well!

Hyper-situational cards are exactly why the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is known for its ridiculous plot armour moments like Shun using RUM - Revolution Force against Sora, it's the series' bread and butter at this point - and considering how hyper-situational certain cards from the past are like Gryphon Wing or Anti-Raigeki, it's something that hasn't changed in quarter of a century.
@theglitch53862 ай бұрын
While I can't recreate the skipped turn sequence in the second duel, I can broadly guess the effects and reasoning that were used during that time. First, the only effect that could rationalize "mouse in attack mode" while accommodating the rest of the board state is: "during the end phase, if a monster(s) special summoned from the extra deck were destroyed this turn and the materials used to summon them are in the grave, special summon those materials to their respective owner's fields." Assuming Shun sacrificed two Force Strix to kill a fusion made from mouse and sabers, he would be willing to go 3 for 4, especially considering his last remaining monster needs the other birds to hope to survive the crack back. The best candidate for a mouse + sabers fusion is Frightfur Tiger, which would track with 2 Force Strix being sacrificed. Because of how Force Strix works, I can see a world where Sora sets a trap that lets him fusion summon during Shun's turn and plays it to change combat math on an attack declaration. If that explanation is true, we just need to explain 2 life point differentials and 2 missing Singing Lanius with 2 of Shun's cards and 1 of Sora's cards (he would have had to use 3 to fusion summon tiger). My analysis here is even fuzzier than my analysis of the revivals, but I could easily see those cards, plus the custom revival spell and fusion trap described above, costing that many life points and that many monsters to attempt to interrupt the other duelist's plays. Since Shun had more unknowns to work with than Sora, that explains why the board state ended in his favor.
