It's a popular story, but it's fiction more than anything else. I'd suggest checking the Serious Eats article written by Robert Moss where he delves into the fiction behind the myths. The history behind the treat is older, and the term "hush puppy" can be traced to at least some time in the 1700's in England in dealing with smuggling. "As far back as the 18th century, the phrase was used as a term for silencing someone or covering something up. An 1738 account describes crooked British officials who, when ordered to board and search a vessel suspected of smuggling, "played the Game of Hush-Puppy," delaying several hours to listen to music in the captain's cabin before conducting their search, by which point the crew had hidden the contraband beneath the ship's ballast." The term was even applied to different types of foods (gravy or pot liquor) before it was connected to fried corn balls. And the fried corn balls had other names. Red horse bread, wampus, red devils and three finger bread. Given the history of how well the food was regarded for human consumption, it's unlikely it was ever fed to dogs in the first place, and it certainly isn't the origin of the name. Unfortunately, the problem with so many urban myths is that they get repeated as fact and tend to stick, no matter how incorrect.

Actually it started with slaves doing that to quiet the dogs when they were running to freedom and everyone else just caught on to it

@@Rmasyal The food (and the saying) are older than any connection to that story Serious Eats covered the topic. The connection to slaves is more myth than fact and is one of those things has been repeated so often that everybody "knows" is true but actually is wrong. It's like the idea that it takes seven years for gum to digest in your stomach or that you can see the Great Wall of China from space. Those things aren't true either, but because people think they are and repeat it, people continue to believe them.

I love the new format, and the awesome recipes! You should do one about some type of Chili con carne or mexican chili! I'm curious how you would do it

The Hush Puppy story is accurate. It was used by confederates during the civil war to stop dogs from barking, and slaves who were on the run used it to stop dogs from barking or chasing them.

I am a Civil War reenactor and I didn’t know that. Thank you

@@jasons.7506 I'm 41 yrs old and when I was maybe 10 or so it was something my grandmother told me or anytime she'd make them. She was from Louisiana and East Texas. Recently in the last couple of years I saw articles popping up saying the same thing, and was like "oh no shit? She wasn't spinning tales!"

Awesome video kinda gives out the old school vibe that this channel used to do when he did singular recipes. Amazing video ❤

Solid, one very quick way to improve the mashed potato is to add nutmeg and a spoon of dijon mustard!

Great video Josh Love the biscuit recipe. We don’t have biscuits in the uk. I will definitely be making these at home for the family

I think our (American) biscuits are more akin to a savory version of British scone.
