Hey guys! In this video, I take my P30 out to the soccer field for some flying. I do a short trimming session, and briefly describe some of the aspects of adjusting a free flight aircraft for level flight. I also notice and describe an odd flight characteristic which seems to be caused by wind or turbulence.
If you enjoyed the video, a like is always highly appreciated! And you can subscribe to see more videos like this released every Saturday! Thanks for watching!

Las saturday i went to a pine forest near my home and i took a rubberband plane that i bought impulsively a lot of time ago (reminding the ones that my grand father bought me when i was just a kid).... i played in the exact way that 25 years ago and the sensation when you calibrate the perfect flight was the same.... very beautiful videos you got there....thanks for not adding anoying music. Regards from Chilean skyes.

Looks like a tough plane that can handle a bump or two. You have done a good job getting it trimmed out. I trim out my planes gliding first, then adjust motor offset to trim under power.
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I built it tough and robust, because I needed a free flight plane for a model flying event I was going to attend, and had no others on hand. So I knew if it was gonna be my only model, it had to take a few crashes. In fact, during that event, there were some strong gusts up to 20 mph, one of which dashed it against the pavement parking lot, but it sustained no damage! I find that trimming larger outdoor FF models with glide-tests has a rather limited degree and efficacy and accuracy, and often trim adjustments made during gliding will need to be altered with power, making for extra time and effort required. But certainly if motor offset is a possible trim parameter, it can be a big help. With this plane, I don’t have any control over thrust angle, so it’s a rather limited aircraft in that sense.

Wow nice plane and flights! I think the weird stall to the left isn’t a gust or a thermal but something with the design. My p 51 mustang does something weird like that too when I hold down the elevator and keep holding it. After it stalls it will go into a spin if I keep the elevator down. Maybe since the rudder and was elevator are constantly deflected it does something like that. Idk. Anyway one thing I was wondering is how you make your props. Happy flying!
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I believe the thing with your P-51 is just on account of the instability inherent to a low-wing warbird. It tip stalls like most low-wings, then because of the poor yaw stability, it easily looses its forward velocity and goes into a spin. The issue with my P30 is that the propeller produces a torque to the left, and the rudder tries to overcome that and produce a right turn. But when the aircraft stops turning right, the upward pitch causes it to slow down, and when it slows down, the rudder looses efficacy but the torque stays strong. So as it pulls up and gently stalls, the torque pulls it over left. Then as the airspeed increases again, the rudder regains its efficacy, and the aircraft banks over to the right again. It might not necessarily be due to air currents, maybe it just had a bit too much up-trim or not enough decalage, not sure. Anyway I’m pretty positive that’s whats going on, although I could be wrong.

As for my props, i just use plastic props. Saves a lot of time and usually yields better performance than anything I could carve.

Great job! Do you have a mentor? I ask because I've seen an older individual in some of your videos. Grandad? Uncle Perhaps? You've progressed a lot in a short time.
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes I do have a mentor. Jesse Aronstein, father of the well-known aeronautical engineer David Aronstein, and an extremely knowledgeable electrical and mechanical engineer himself, has been mentoring me on-and-off for the past 4 years. He is the president of the Electric-Powered Aeromodelers of Schenectady, and he arranges all the indoor flying sessions at he armory where many of my videos were filmed. But seeing as we live over an hour apart, and school and my other exploits leave me busy for usually around 10 hours a day, we rarely have time to get together, and thus the vast majority of my improvement has come from my own efforts and studies.

That’d be cool! I s’pose we could just both make ornithopters of our own design, and then bring them to the flyjam to test fly them. :) You make your butterfly, I’ll make my pterosaur, and we’ll try to keep yours from migrating and keep mine from eating yours. 😂

I'll see what I can do. There's a lot going on in my shop at the moment. The ornithopter butterfly I want to build is quite complex and I think I may need to get a 3D printer to make the gears and parts.

A thermal catches one wing and not the other ? C'mon.
@AeroCraftAviation
@AeroCraftAviation 9 ай бұрын
Yeah that's usually how you know you're near a thermal if you're flying an RC glider for example, if one wing lifts up you just turn that direction and you'll find the thermal. With free flight airplanes they'll often run into little pockets of sink or lift that cause them to bob side-to-side.
