Here's another practice video for the Chopin Concerto No.1, since many of you emailed me and commented on the "Day 1 of Practicing" video asking for more videos like this. I hope the practice strategies and practice process I use can help each of you in the pieces you're studying. Please stay safe and healthy during this COVID-19 quarantine! Have a great week of practicing

Dear Dr. Wright, thank you for sharing this video. I understand how vulnerable we are during practice sessions, and I thank you so much for letting us learn from your private space.

I think the main reason a lot of people really enjoyed these practice sessions is because A lot of us somehow still think that professional pianist are just perfect from the very beginning.... knowing that someone who plays brilliantly actually practices the same way that we might practice creates the possibility that we may one day be that great also.

Ohh man, I really appreciate your effort of showing us the practice routine and all of your other videos! I'm just starting my journey of playing piano and I find all of your advice really useful even if some of them apply to more advanced players. As for this concerto in E minor, it's become my favorite piece of music since the Chopin Piano Competition 2015 after Kate Liu performed it! I've listened to it literally more than 500 times. It's really fun to watch how you slowly put apart a single excerpts of this piece and show how to approach them. I know I'll never reach this level but thanks to this concert I got so much motivated and started playing piano! Cheers man!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my email about concerto 2.
This concerto hurt me so much when I learned it in 1999 due to my right mid finger was having a huge injury but I didn't border till I got this big piece in my memory. My mom loves it and I am still playing for her once in a while.

The edition of the Chopin piano concerto no.1 that I’m using is the Rafael Joseffy edition published by schirmer Newyork. There are slight differences between your Paderewski edition and Joseffy editions of this concerto.

Thank you so much for these types of videos. It helps me to stay calm and focused and not stress so much whenever I sit to practice and feel like I can't do it right. It makes the entire process much more bearable. Specially during this whole Covid-19 lockdown.

Thank you Josh again! This is a great video. About time 26:00, I have this issue a lot. I already feel panic & sometimes think maybe... because not sleep enough or I ate something wrong before practice, or some other life things. (Thanks for explanation!)

Hi josh could you do a practice analysis of the chromatic opening bars in F-sharp minor section entrance to the second movement of the Rachmaninov 3rd concerto ? There are cross rhythms in the right hand and left hands in triplet eight notes in the right hand against a group of four sixteenth notes in the left hand. That entire opening segment in F sharp minor is quite complex rhythmically because of the polyrhythms. How do you go about marking the areas where you have triplet eighth notes in the right hand against quintuplet sixteenths in the left hand and quintuplet sixteenths in the right hand against a group of eight sixteenth notes in the left hand before the leading entrance into the D-flat major main theme of the movement. Hope you can envisage the opening section of the second movement I’m talking about or trying to describe. Any fingerings tips you use especially in the right hand ?

Liszt: "Think (lank?) times and play once." Also, "Learn the notes one day and the rhythms the next." Quotes are not exact...but something to consider, maybe find correct quotes.

Another way to convey what you are thinking while practicing is to use captions, so you don't distrupt your momentum by interrupting yourself to talk to us! Tiffany Poon does it like that :)

Hello, im sry for writing this under a video like that, because it doesnt fit. My situation: I dont have a lesson since Corona and didnt ever had real sightreading training, like how to do it normal. Its not the fault of my teacher, she teaches wonderful and teachs me so much musicality and technic, but im still very bad at sightreading. I informed myself about sightreading and I have to focus at reading next note/measure before I play it, but I cant do that. I wasnt able to find easy pieces i could start with to play them without interrupting and reading like i mentioned before, so i started with Mikrokosmos, but still its difficult to play like the 9 exercise at 140 bpm. I also feel like I cant concentrate enough. Idk what to do, i dont even know what to ask lol. And i dont know when my next lesson starts, but i want to progress without, yeah. Enjoy your day maybe you have some advice 🤷♂️
