I remember asking you almost 2 years ago: "what is with AbuBilaal Yakub's (and all the Hamza Yusuf lovers') fascination with Imam Ghazali?" The awake Christians seem to use it against us as well. Thank you for pointing out the idolization, the partnering, and the association with Allah he speaks of... directly or indirectly, knowingly or otherwise. There is only ONE Lord of Mankind.

Thought provoking discussion. Until the Muslim ummah acknowledges the Islamic dark past and use the critical and logical thinking to discern what is the real or parallel Islam, then there is not much hope for us.

Salamun alaykum, no muslim understand the ritual prayer to be something Allah swt would be in need of. We are in need of it, it is our bodys obligation to our soul - notice the consonantial similiarity between "soul" and "salat". Of course it should not be practiced as a mindless ritual. The prophet gave advice to pray as we could see Allah, so with high state of awareness. The salat is supposed to be our mirāj, our journey to the heaven. And think about the sajda, the prostration, to be the only position where the heart overtops our brain. Moreover the physical salat is our reconnection to the elements we are from: First water by doing the ablution and second earth by prostrating to natural ground. I consider myself to be a so called "Quran only" muslim as well, and I am scared off the sunni and shia pettiness regarding the salat, but leaving the whole physical part of salat seems to be the other extreme.

are you sure that the word mi'rāj is about "journey"? (btw, isra' means journey not mi'rāj) does the word "mirāj" even exist in the Qur'an? (i don't think so)

@@mt000mp ascension is the word I missed, sorry english is not my mothertongue. I know many Qur'ān only muslims doubt the ascension to heaven of Muhammad. The thing is that even the orthodox muslims who believe in the physical ascension/journey of the Prophet to the skies, they claim that the salat gives us the same opportunity - to elevate our soules. Miraj only gives this process or event a name, and it is commonly understood. What are your thoughts on the actual question?

I think sir. Leslie could've choose 'Umar Ibn abd al-aziz' or 'Umar II' as an exemplar rather than Ghazali. He is known as a Reformer , Scholar , Patron and Ruler. the Best caliph ever existed in my honest opinion. also Dr.Omar spoke too much in tangent and veered off from the original topic and that has made Sir Leslie spoke too little because he's trying to recollect and curate information also pacing through the topics whilst you gave so little time for him to speak.
