Nalbandian really sat down on his shots and cracked the ball hard. I understand his racquet weighed nearly 14 ounces, same thing with Berdych (as well as Sampras). When players with heavy frames can get themselves into a good hitting position, the mass of the racquet alone really thumps the ball.

Federer playing in the 4th round US open and more than half of the seats are unseated. Unthinkable now.

Maybe? But this is two non-Americans in the 4th round and on the stadium court - not surprising. You’d also want to check what other matches were happening at the same time. Another issue: this looks like mid-day match in extreme heat. People are outside the stadium in the shade enjoying lunch. I’ll bet the stadium started to fill up more toward the end when people caught word that there was an upset in the making.

Nalbandian defeated Federer & lost to Roddick. Examples like these, the closer one looks- there was NO 03-07 "weak era". Federer was just on a sublime level at his best in his peak, certainly in the Goat discussion
@brokeboyaltaccount2

you cant say this era is not weak and then say the current one is weak. if you say this era is not weak then just say no era is weak, then federer is still not the goat

He lost after the crowd started yelling during the rally in the 3rd set breaker and he held a match point. Without that, Roddick has 0 slams, plus he was 5-0 against Federer after this match, as the commentator said.

Exactly! What I always tell people. Watch peak Roddick play peak Nadal and see what happens. Or can I interest you in peak Nalbandian vs Peak Djokovic. Good luck Novak against the Nalbandian backhand! And what would Nadal do against Roddick’s serve!

The undisputed Goat, not because of what he accomplished in his 2003-07 peak, but what he did from 2008-12, 2014-15, and then again from 2017-19. Continous greatness, with a game gifted by the gods.

The courts have slowed so much since 2007. Had they stayed at this speed, Federer would have many more grand slams.

Nalbandian was world class. His movement was second to none and had an Ivanisevic like serve. Had it not been for Federer/injuroes, he easily would’ve won 10 or more majors. What a talent!

@@bradleydavis9502 yes he was a great allcourt player with superb movement, tennis IQ, and technique. I loved watching him, he was one of very few players who could make the two-hander look as aestheticslly pleasing as a one handed backhand. But an Ivanisevic serve? He was a good spot server , i'll give you that. But he wasn't a very tall player and his serve was certainly a weaker part of his game, along with his sometimes sub par stamina.

bit of a preview how federer struggled v djokovic later on. nalbandian is a strong backhand player, much like djokovic turned out to be. Double hander to federer's looping one hander, a great double hander will come out on top . Djokovic is a very strong backhand dominant player and hurt federer (and every other player) with the double hander down the line.
@cloak9001
@cloak9001 2 жыл бұрын
That's why fed would slice whenever solid double-handed players like djo/murray and nalbandian hit to fed's bh, or if fed was confident, hit a bh winner to not give those players the time they need as "pushers" to hit shots.
