It is against the law for any british citizen whether in the army or not to travel abroad and fight for a foreign country. Although the punishment for that will vastly vary depending on whether they are close alley or an enemy.

I don't believe it is against the law to volunteer for foreign armies. Only serving army personnel are banned. But they can volunteer after discharge from the army. A 23-yr old former Welsh Fusilier Alexander Garms-Rizzi, 'Sasha' has died in Ukraine. Half Russian, it meant he could not see his Mother, but he still absconded from an exercise in Estonia and joined Ukraine's forces. He was court martialled and jailed for 1 year, but discharged. So he returned to the fight and was killed, sacrificing himself for three comrades.
