So back in the late 80s, I worked with an older gentleman. I told him I played drums and he said that’s nice, my grandson is in a band too. I was like cool and left it at that. About six months go by, and he tells me his grandsons coming to visit him at work and if I wanted to meet him. So I was like what’s your grandson’s name? He said Ross, Valory. I said from journey? No way! I couldn’t believe it, but sure enough he came in and I got to meet him. Really cool guy.

Steve Perry's voice is amazing but I always enjoyed Journey most when Gregg Rolie was still with the band.

No question, gimme an actual piano over synthesizers any day. And to have Rolie's voice to give us an occasional break from Perry's high pitch was perfect, and his harmonies were excellent too.

Beautiful kitty! This is very very old, very shortly after Steve Perry joined the band. Love the harmonies with Steve and Gregg. Steve is the GOAT.

Yes, you need to go down the Journey rabbit hole. Raised on Radio had some great hits and Trial By Fire, though ballad-heavy, is superb - and the production / mix is awesome. Their albums post-Perry had some great songs, too.

I attended the "Grand Slam Jam" concert at the Milwaukee County Stadium in 1978. Journey was the opening act followed by Cheap Trick, then Heart and Ted Nugent headlined!! All for $12.50! Then in 1979 (when I was in the Navy), I saw Journey as a headliner when Thin Lizzy opened! Awesome concert in San Bernardino, CA. Btw, I think 'Infinity' is their best record with Steve Perry!!

Btw, January 1st of this year marked 50 years of live gigs for Journey (who initially called themselves the Golden Gate Rhythm Section)! They first played the Diamond Head Crater Festival, HI, in a thrown-together lineup which included Neal, Ross, Gregg, bassist Pete Sears, and drummer Greg Errico on 1/1/73.

One of the elite songs ever that I've never seen anyone give a reaction to is Stay Awhile by Journey, and I see you're willing to go off-road, could you check out the studio version of it?

Albums started selling once they had Steve Perry. He was first a back up singer. They knew they needed a front man who could sing by himself and with Gregg Rolie.

Steve Perry is a vocal beast and Neal Schon is underrated as a guitarist he started playing with Santana at 15 years old!

Feeling That Way is way underrated, a top 3 or 4 Journey song. So much so, it got lumped in with a different song so DJs could run to the can back in the day, and then came to be known as just one song by all. Nothing wrong with Anytime, but Feeling That Way has SUCH an excellent vibe, crazy it wasn't even released as a single. Also, it's a real shame you weren't able to hear the studio version.

A little factoid about Ross Valory....he always tuned his bass just ever so slightly......sharp. He felt it helped him cut through the mix.

That keys player, Gregg Rolie, was their original lead singer on their first 3 albums before Steve Perry joined. They had a more progressive rock sound in the early days.

Neil Schon and Greg Rollie both came out of Santana to form Journey. Aynsley Dunbar on drums at that time.

Came here directly from Test for Echo. 😄Good choice. These two songs were played back-to-back constantly. Tons of airplay. This was just before Perry began his wicked transformation from mouse to monster. Aynsley Dunbar was the first casualty, replaced in short order by Steve Smith (late '78) because Perry didn't like him. Gregg left on his own a couple of years later partially because he saw where things were headed with Perry. This was a great lineup while it lasted. SP sounded so effortless back then. One of the greatest of all time. Gregg and Steve worked so well together. There is a rare live performance of "Look Into the Future" recorded just after Perry joined the band. Steve doesn't come in until the end, but his interplay with Rolie is just magical.

It's become abundantly clear that Neal Schon was always the problem and if he was replaced earlier, Rolie and Perry would likely still be in the band. Dunbar was a great drummer, but couldn't tone it down enough for top 40 hits. So they bring in one of the goats in Smith, who was willing to "under-play" for radio hits. But, now we have Cain and Schon fighting over how much money they deserve from Steve Perry's legacy while performing in a Journey cover band.

@@robluptowski6202 Interesting thoughts. However, I don’t subscribe to the now-popular point of view that Schon was “always” the problem - not by any means. Neither did Herbert nor did Morrow (who was and is a pretty straight shooter). By Morrow’s account, Perry entered the fold, decided that he didn’t like Dunbar or his playing, and had Herbert fire him. He did the same to Valory and Smith. I spoke to Smith shortly after he was let go. He was still very confused and hurt by the whole thing. I also don’t think Rollie would have stayed if Schon hadn’t been in the picture. They were tight from the beginning. And Perry left of his own volition.

Fair enough. Sounds like you know more to the story than most. Big money=Big egos, though. Dunbar, Smith, and Valory are the innocent victims of Schon, Perry and Cain. I still find it disgusting that Schon continues to recreate AND profit from the "Perry" sound. Would have more respect if he had returned to the jazz/rock fusion. Abraxas Pool.

@@robluptowski6202 From interviews I've heard, Dunbar had some serious personal problems. And Rolie has said repeatedly that Perry had nothing to do with his leaving, a fact just recently backed up by Rolie's wife.

Other than the tape hiss, what a fantastic performance. I believe there are a lot of better quality live vids online with equally great performances ( but maybe post Greg Rollie ). I remember constantly listening to their Captured album ( live 1981 ?? Escape Tour ) on my Sony Walkman while doing my paper route in the early 80s ( Rush Exit Stage Left on the flipside of my metal cassette tape ). Check the live 1981 vid of Mother, Father sometime. Unfortunately, I never got to a Journey concert in the late 70s or early 80s.

Journey albums since Frontiers: Raised On Radio 1986 ( Perry, Schon, Cain plus studio musicians ) They didn't officially break up but went to separate projects after that Trial By Fire 1996 ( Perry, Schon, Cain, Valory, Smith reunited ) Arrival 1999 ( Steve Augeri replaces Perry, then Schon, Cain, Valory, Dean Castronovo replaces Smith ) Generations 2005 ( same lineup as Arrival ) Revelations 2008 ( Arnel Pineda replaces Augeri, then Schon, Cain, Valory, Castronovo ) Eclipse 2011 ( same lineup as Revelations ) Freedom 2022 ( Pineda, Schon, Cain, Randy Jackson replacing Valory, Narada Walden replacing Castronovo ) Simple 😅

Nice...I've always loved this duo of tunes. Not the best recording...too bad. Quite a dichotomy from La Do Da, right...fantastic tune. Many don't know the band's musical prowess because of the pop hits. Tunes like "Line of Fire," "Escape," "Dixie Highway," "Keep on Runnin," and "Chain Reaction" all smoke. Neil started playing with Santana when he was 15!

Hi Justin, I'm a Musician and I have a Bad taste in my mouth about them from an incident that happened? I lived in Wisconsin and went to a show in the 1970s with 2 girlfriends and we went to an after party in the hotel where they bought out a whole floor so they wouldn't be disturbed, which was Awesome, and proceeded to Smoke & drink then the girls went off on their own and I just partied with everyone then when the girls came back and went home. About a week later one of the girls said she went to the doctor and thinks shes pregnant by the Keyboard player? I told her "Well nell that's Rock-n-Roll😎
