1978 Journey. Infinity had been released in January; this show is in June. The great Aynsley Dunbar was still in the group. Neal Schon is raw, playing the Look Into the Future and the Next material along with Infinity ♾. Gregg Rolie is great, vocal and organ. Saw them at the Cow Palace New Years Eve 1977-78.Their last concert with the first three albums played. Then at The Old Waldorf, with a set by the original band and Perry coming out near the end. Hearing the new material for the first time. Awesome. Those were magical days. Thanks for this show. Musical history. The Journey continues.....

Anyone who experienced these times of Journey with Perry's performances and this line up from 78-80 including myself as a pre-teen couldn't believe what they were hearing/seeing live. Masters at work putting on an amazing show: Rockin and Fearless per vocals and musicianship. This is actually my favorite Journey era: Not to say 81-86 were not amazing but this was the line-up per Perry/Rolie vocals and showmanship. Just on fire and electric live! No auto tuner, no enhancement tricks, no need for anything but 5 amazing musicians to go out and play and be this phenomenal!

Infinity, their best album to date and my personal favorite. Their first 3 albums were top notch as far as musicianship and Infinity just captured those 3 albums by making them more listener friendly with Steve as the lead vocalist. @@williamweiss6128 Raw yes, but i think his sound more evolved than it did thin out. He had several memorable solos that had a lot of feel to it, as opposed to just filler (not that anything was actually "filler", all great playing but just more raucus). Stone in Love, Who's Crying Now, Send Her My Love. Very emotional guitar that blends in, suits the feel of the song well. After that... Yeah. I think all musicians though reach the point of diminishing returns eventually though.

The original Journey sound like a mixture of Cream, and the Beatles on steroids! Ross and Aynsley holding down the rhythm while adding powerful improvisation. Neal Schon sounds like Eric Clapton at the next level. Eric even said as much to Neal himself, when he invited him to join Derek and the Dominos. After Neal sat in with them at Berkeley Community Theater, but Neal of course, went with Santana. So powerful, melodic and inspiring ✨ Steve Perry then added powerful vocals. And they were off to the races!

Years ago I went to a Journey concert. I went to the front of the stage as soon as they were done playing and as soon as I saw I had a clear shot I ran across the stage right up to Aynsleys drum set! I still have them to this day.

Aynsley was my first real drum hero, when I started playing at 8. Even though Infinity was Journey's 4th album, it was my introduction to the band, I was only a pup. When I saw that Soundstage performance a short time later, it blew me away. But YOU got to meet Aynsley! What he played on Infinity was so stripped down 'cos he had to serve the songs they were doing. But you dig into the back catalog...if he had won the coin toss and became Hendrix's drummer, one could only imagine!!!! But hey, great story dude. Long live rock!!!!

@@josephmondzak5670 ... I have to disagree ... Steve did not "blow out his vocal cords at 10 years" ... sure he was burnt out from the grueling touring they were doing, & had lost his passion for music, & he had to take care of himself & his own health (which I totally respect him for doing & am so thankful he did ... look how many rock stars ruined their health & even lost their lives becoming strung out on drugs & the wild rock life) ... but even at age 70, the man still has a powerful voice & can still hit high notes ... maybe he can't hit all the same exact ones he did back then, but tell me who could after 35-40 years ?? ... The /???? labeled by poster after Next is just the ending of the song. It could simply be labeled La Do Da> Next. From 1974 to 1978 Journey was one of the most mind blowing, incredible, talented and significant bands on the planet. Their first three albums, as well as Infinity, are landmarks in American progressive music. The British prog bands from the 70's get all the credit, along with Rush (and very rightfully so) but there are two American bands that were just as formidable and influential to us younf music nerds at the time. Journey from 1974 to 1978 and Kansas from 1974 to 1980ish. Life changing....salvation...life SAVING music I tell you.

+Anthony Phillips - I agree with you regarding Journey. Their best music, essentially, was prior to Steve Perry. From progressive rock, down to the gutter of "Bubble Gum" style pop music with the addition of Perry.

Bands such as Rush credit the early instrumental work of Journey as an influence in some of their song writing. Totally agree with you on this.

One of my biggest regrets is not seeing Journey in their prime, some call them a wimpy band, wrong, they were a great rock band. Neal Schon is one of the best guitarist of all time, and Steve Perry was awesome.

I just began hearing Journey. 1979 was my the official start of my Journey fandom. Have been ever since.

Saw this Journey tour at the Fabulous Fox in ATL in 1978. Believe it or not VAN HALEN opened (first album tour), followed by Ronnie Montrose ("Open Fire" album) and then Journey promoting their "Infinity" album. A night to remember for sure.

I saw the same lineup at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa on 4-22-1978. Aynsley Dunbar was my favorite drummer and Eddie Van Halen quickly became my second favorite guitarist (behind Ritchie Blackmore). To see VH on their first tour and Dunbar with Journey again (saw them 5-9-1975 with Ian Hunter/Mick Ronson and Aerosmith) was a great night.

With exception of Valory who got thrown out a couple of years back, It's not differences as Schon played all this stuff recently with Rolie in Journey Through Time. Perry couldn't last 10 minutes singing any of that now. Not sure what Dunbar is up to.

Neal Schon's guitar solo here was an instrumental version of Leon Russell's song "A Song For You." Most popular 70's version was sung by Donny Hathaway. Neal Schon has a studio version of it on his solo album "Voices" I believe. It contains covers.

Nice to hear Neil Schon without all the echo/reverb that his using today. Here you can really hear how great he is.Now it's just a soup and you can barely hear anything his playing because it's all just delay/echo and tons of reverb.
