Very interesting history of gem cutting. The pink story was funny. And that last tiny machine also. That would be tough cutting tiny stones

I'm enjoying your series! Seeing the O'Brien took me back to the days when, as a child, I wanted a faceting machine almost as much as I wanted oxygen. My first machine was a Graves, though, which I still have. Now I use a Lee, which has a blocky construction (mast) and does have a micro adjustment for the angle setting. i used an Imahashi when I worked for Golden City Lapidary, in SF, CA in the '70s.

Hi Justin! I am still in the process of designing and building my own faceting machine. I wonder, if you were to design your own handpiece, how would it differ from the latest sterling handpiece? Is there anything in the design you would really wish be improved? BR from germany, andy

Hi Andy. I’ve thought a lot about that and there are several features I would like to add and aesthetic aspects that I would change. However I’m planning to actually make my own Handpiece and sell it sooner or later so I don’t want to reveal all my secret ideas yet 😅

why dont the handpieces have a part that freely slides up and down so that the handpiece feet always touch the ground thereby keeping the angle the same all the time?
@JustinKPrim2 жыл бұрын
There is one that can do that but honestly its the worst one I've tried. The thing that makes it go up and down makes the handpiece really heavy. But also its nice for the angle to go up and down with the handpiece plate. Its a really fast way to adjust your angle so you can stretch out facets that need adjusted, on the fly.
@samosdolphins1232 жыл бұрын
@@JustinKPrim i am new to this and have bee watching your videos which are really useful thank you. i want to ask you, i want to start faceting, but i dont have the money to buy a lap, could i fix the al oxide wet dry sandpaper on a hard flat surface and use one of these handpieces and just move them , it will take longer but will it work do you think? i am planning on making one of these handpieces because i cannot find them online and when i do they are pretty expensive. i was thinking of trying to make one like the thai handpiece but i will have it in two parts and connect the two parts with a small sliding rail so that the part moves down as i press from the top and keeping the angle the same. am thinking of putting some ball bearings in place of the feet so they move across with less friction to do this.
@JustinKPrim2 жыл бұрын
@@samosdolphins123 yes actually in Burma they sometimes take sandpaper and tape it down on the kitchen table and just run the stone in handpiece back and forth across it. I guess it works. This is not a bad idea. Same for making your own handpiece. The Thai one is very simple. However it’s also very cheap like $25 so maybe easier to buy one😅

After you got better and better in your art ( faceting ), how did you feel when you got a stone belonging to a shop and told you to do the faceting? Were you scared?? Scared from maybe damaging it or anything? I am just very curious. I just subscribed again LOL 😂
