Let's be honest here, Journey did not sell over 100 million records because of Greg Rollie. The man is a great musician but just an average singer, by far not having the same power, nor reach as Perry. The 'golden' duo is Schön/Perry alright.

Rollie and Perry have different voice types Greg is a low tenor like Barry Manilow and Steve is a high tenor in a class of his own- both different sounds at their best which is why they sound great together

As I have said on other posts, Infinity PERFECTLY straddles that elusive line between being commercially successful and still being able to appeal to musicians and be very interesting to listen to.

There are rock performers, there are many rock stars and then there are the legends. Love this legendary line-up of Journey. Special song with the vocals of Perry and Rolie, sizzling guitar of Schon. In the 50's, it was thought that rock was just a passing fad. This art form lives. So glad we have documentation like this for future generations to discover. Rock on!

My first introduction to Journey was with this lineup. Although Journey went on to super stardom after Greg left the band. they never sounded better than when he was with the band, Greg and Steve complimented each other perfectly and the harmonies were incredible. There just wasn't enough room on the stage for two lead vocalists. If Greg had stayed with the band maybe Steve wouldn't have burned his voice out.

Greg Rollie decided to leave the band on his own. He hand picked Jonathan Cain to replace him. He was burned out on years of touring. He has said so in interviews. He wanted to take a break. But I agree, this lineup of Journey produced some great music and the mix of their vocals made the sound unique.

That's right Greg was the master mind behind Journey without him there wouldn't have been no super stardom. He assembled a great line of musicians to get the final product.

According to Greg there was more to it than being burnt. He stated he felt Perry was wanting to totally take the vocals and he felt it was time to leave. I agree Journey was never better than this line up and both complemented each other sounding great together!

Rolie, as others here say was just an awesome contrast and co-lead singer. When it went to just Perry, though he's remembered by most fans as the voice of Journey, they lost something.

Yea they did. Perry has that crazy tone, but Rollie was a great lead singer in his own right. What was really magical is how well they contrast and yet harmonized together. Cain is great, but not a lead and the harmony not quite as great.

I will never forget that day in May 1979, when I first heard this song. Right away I liked it quite a lot, and for a six-year-old going on seven, the music led to a larger musical world. Journey took me on a "journey" indeed. I hope Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie get together and create a new spark.

I was fortunate enough to see journey 12 times, 11 with Steve Perry . I remember the first time I heard wheel in the sky, that was it for me.. went and got tickets and it was absolutely by far the best concert. They just released Evelotion and were touring and they performed every song from Infinty and Evelotion 4 hours of pure genius. I myself thought Ansley Dunbar was a great drummer but he was replaced with Steve Smith. Journey went through changes but it never sounded better than the first few albums. Gregg rollie ,Neil schone, Ross valory, Steve Perry and Ansley Dunbar. Absolutely a great time to be alive.

Journey has actually been around since 1973. Neil Schon and Greg Rolie split from Santana to form The Golden Gate Rhythm Section, and eventually Journey. From 1973 to 1977, Journey was a rock/jazz fusion band. The band and their record label wanted them to make the leap to being a full fledged rock band and find a place on the radio.
