a replacement to DJI would be cool but that is a massive investment in software which everyone has given up on besides DJI

Totally. We're at the point now where DJI has been so dominant for so long, it IMO would be easier for a new player to develop something usefully different than try to out-DJI DJI, if that makes sense.
