Yeah except archipelago was known since 1552, when Hugh Willowby set foot on one of the islands. People lived there probably way way before, the stone labyrinth from cca. 2000years ago discovered on the southern island being an evidence. So your claim about this being the last discovered territory on the planet, discovered in 1913 is just a hype to get more customers or do you really not know what are you selling here??
@QuarkExpeditions2 жыл бұрын
Hi 23mystiq, thanks for your inquiry. It’s always great to meet fellow Arctic enthusiasts as we folks at Quark Expeditions are. You are totally right, Sir Hugh Willoughby on his ship Bona Esperanza was the first west European that had reported about seeing Novaya Zemlya in 1553, when he was blown far East by miserable winds. Likely Willoughby did not set foot on land, this privilege was to be for Willem Barents during his 1594-97 expeditions to Novaya Zemlya. Gerhard Mercators "World Atlas" from 1569 already shows Novaya Zemlya on the maps after the news from Willoughby’s journals had reached Mercator. Undoubtedly earlier explorers, naming as one example the Pomors (Slavic settlers around the White Sea that explored the coasts around as hunters, fishers, traders, etc.) had set foot on Novaya Zemlya already in 11th or 12th century. Further evidence for an early settlement is these stone labyrinths, that you mention. They were discovered coincidently by the 1997 expedition of Russian ornithologist Samesov. Possibly reindeer herders and hunters have explored Novaya Zemlya much earlier during more favorable climatic conditions. However, in our video "Journey to the Last Place on Earth: Severnaya Zemlya", that you are referring to, we speak about Severnaya Zemlya. While Novaya Zemlya borders the Kara Sea at its western shores, Severnaya Zemlya is the archipelago on the eastern shores of Kara Sea. So these two archipelagos Novaya Zemlya and Severnaya Zemlya are some 1000 Kilometers apart from each other, divided by this Kara Sea, a water body nearly 1 million square Kilometers. Severnaya Zemlya indeed was only discovered in 1913 and charted then in the 1930s. Earlier explorers like Yakov Sannikov have speculated about any such land mass at the position of Severnaya Zemlya already in 1810, but he, as all later passing by explorers like Adolf Nordenskjöld on his Northeast Passage in 1879 or Fridtjof Nansen with his Fram in 1895, failed to present any proof. So official discovery of Severnaya Zemlya is indeed 1913. It’s easy to confuse these difficult Russian names like Novaya and Severnaya Zemlya. The Russian High Arctic features fascinating islands, rich history, and abundant wildlife.
