Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malula s residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. I have got many Aramean friends from Syria but none of them can still speak it fluently. The biggest exclusively Aramean town is al-Qosh in Iraq...I think this is the only place on earth where the current young generation still speaks it.

I have dark hair but I have very pale skin which tends to turn red and I'm unable to have a tan, mostly because I avoid direct sunlight. It's sunny and tropical most of the year. If Assad and the Baathists had been ousted from power by the Islamist rebels, this village and many alike with sizable Christian populations, imagery and holy sites, would largely be abandoned, desecrated, and ransacked. There are TONS of people from northern Iraq that also speak Aramaic… many are of the Syriac or Eastern Orthodox Church. My brother’s wife is from Baghdad. Her father is working to teach and preserve Syriac and Biblical Aramaic. Sameer Hache, if you’re from Baghdad, Iraq and are Eastern Orthodox and see this comment you probably know of him. There’s plenty of folks from Baghdad and further north that speak Aramaic, especially in Erbil and the Kurdistan portion of Iraq.

They speak Syriac, Assyrian, or Chaldean. Those are related to Aramaic but they aren't the same. Syriac is northern aramaic while Assyrian and Chaldean are at their foundation eastern semitic Assyrian (not the same as modern day Assyrian) with large influence from North-west semitic Syriac.

The conflict is because of different beliefs. Most muslims don't believe that Yeshua is the Messiah. My wife's parents are muslim ( she is not herself) and her dad and I had a discussion about this. They think Yeshua is a prophet and that is it. Christians believe Yeshua is the Savior- the Messiah prophesied about in the Old and New Testaments. That is why conflict occurs.

Do you know any of the coptic language? And yeah, there is little info online it seem for Aramaic. When I was visiting Iraq and Turkey I met Aramaic speakers (it may be a different dialect). In that region many still speak it if you wanna take a trip over there.

It is very strange. All the Christian literature including NT is written in Greek. The OT is in Hebrew. Jesus obviously knew Hebrew since the Torah is in Hebrew.

Another point to consider, since Jesus according to NT used to study Torah in the Temple it is not possible NOT to know Hebrew since Torah is written in Hebrew. There is no rabbi in the world who doesn't know Hebrew today. Nada. It is impossible to imagine. It is not like a priest in Christianity who doesn't read NT in Greek and OT in Hebrew. So it is highly unlikely he didn't speak Hebrew. Languages never disappear within couple of hundred years, especially Hebrew the holy language.

Maybe you should do your research as the predominant color of region can change over a few decades let alone 2000 years. Search for pictures of Palestine before 1948, they were much whiter before being ethnically cleansed and before Arab influence. Muslims tend to be browner than the Christians because Muslims came from further east and settled. During the time of Jesus, there were no Muslim influence, not for 600 years. Native Palestinian Christians, even just 80 years ago could easily be mistaken for Southern (White) Europeans (Greeks for example). In fact there was a lot of Greek influence in that region 2000 years ago. Even some native Palestinians could be mistaken for southern Europeans today, sadly most have since been displaced due to ethnic cleansing. Lesson for you. Do your research on the history of region before making a wild claim like that. Especially when it's directly related to the skin color of someone 2k years ago.

Aramaic isn't the mother of Arabic but rather a sister of Arabic since both languages emerged from Proto-Semitic which is the ancestor of today's Semitic languages (e.g. Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic). That's why these three languages share so many similarities and similar words etc.
