Somalia Pirates (2011): As Somali piracy refuses to go away, why does the international community seem powerless to stop it? Starving and desperate Somali fishermen are starting to suggest that maybe they don't want to. Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: kzbin.info_c...

"If they were serious about tackling piracy they would have solved it ages ago", says the Somali coastguard. While they watch enormous international naval vessels patrol the high seas, they can't even afford to take their single vessel out of the harbour. For them it is obvious: the Western ships have reasons other than pirates for wanting to patrol these waters. A predominance of large warships that seem unsuited to the fight against piracy seem to support their claims. "These vessels are enormous; we have small maneuverable boats, we can get away fast", one pirate tells us.
Problems with piracy started here when Somali fishermen hijacked foreign trawlers that were fishing in Somali waters without permits. Then, as now, European naval vessels protected these illegal trawlers, which practically cleaned out local waters of fish. "We're afraid of only one thing. Something much worse than cannons and bullets: hunger". Have Somali seas become an international playground for self-serving Western navies - testing arms, protecting illegal fishery or just polishing up their international image?

Crime doesn't pay much less sustain an entire country's economy in the long run. Oh and by the way these Somalian pirates are well outside Somalian waters and have extended their operations to almost the entire Indian ocean now, for eg, search Seychelles Somalian piracy.

That was an excellent perspective of the pirate movement in somalia. I feel terrible for them. All of them. They might still engage in piracy after aid is given, but where on earth is there zero crime. The international community needs to hold ships registered to them accountable for poaching fish. Take one ship from each major NATO country and use them to secure the fishing grounds for the somalis. The complacency and indifference of my country, and their allies greatly undermines the "good guy" image they try to portray.
@lukeulibarri3924
@lukeulibarri3924 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. The problem is proving that particular companies and ships were there and holding them accountable. The issue is that merchant cargo ships are being attacked that have nothing to do with poaching.

The western countries should be ashamed of them selves for illegally fishing out Somali waters. And the navies of those countries are a disgrace by protecting the foreign trawlers that have no business there in the first place. I suppose a country that is so poor they have only one boat in their entire coast guard, is a very easy country to take advantage of. I hate to sound like one who promotes lawlessness and piracy on the high seas, but the Somali people, including the pirates, are more so the victims than the cargo ships they are riding. Being a wealthy country does not give anyone the right to take advantage of the less fortunate.

+Kristian Brandt utter nonsense! What are your talking about preserving humanity? Country as poor as Somali at least they have the right to fish. They don't even get that from international countries instead of helping the country they let their companies fish in somali waters what do you expect is the outcome? No country accepts illegal fishing, why should somalis ?
@kristianbrandt3012
@kristianbrandt3012 8 жыл бұрын
+Saaxib M I'm not saying they should, I'm saying the NATO navy is there to inforce anti piracy laws, not to catch illegal fishermen. If you allow pirates to make hostages out of fishermen, illegal or not, while countering piracy you're being somewhat counter productive. And while the NATO ships a very big, very heavily armed and carrying a crew made up of mostly special forces, there are only a small handful of them covering an area the size of Europe. Imagine Whale Wars, then edit out the big Japanese ships and replace them with tiny pirate ships disguised as fishing boats. Then give them more than one objective. See how catching both pirates and fishermen in such a vast sea is somewhat hopeless? Catching illegal fishermen is a job for the local coastguard.

Somalia is not what people think, they not bad but time put them in that situation of piracy. is a great country which has diverse ancient, there is lots of opportunity and is good for Tourist. As the mater of the fact: The country destroyed by western world because they were greedy for Somalia's recourses, Khadafi and his allies agreed on that in order not to be explored OIL/GAS in Somalia, there were a good relationship between Libya, Saudi Arabia and Italian mafias. in other hand: Chevron founded many walls in Somalia they covered on top with cements. You know OIL is like a river running under so If Somalia explore these countries will produce less OIL because their OILS will flee down to Somalia as Scientist said and Somalia is a virgin country still it's but these colonial never get chance to steal the wealth, that what our great forefathers die for. Our beloved President Siyad BARE refused to take 40% of OIL contracts, he says: 70% or more. Somalia got tribal conflict for centuries which did not get a chance to solve and these countries started supporting the oppositions to get rid of the Bare administration, then the government collapsed and the country begun Civil war which destroyed the whole country, also caused lost of many lives. There will be a good solution if Western get off their hands in Somalia!! They still interfering tho!! Maybe one day Somalia will restore peace and prosperity once again. By: Prince

Here's the BEST solution: If illegal fishing vessels are causing Somali fishermen to become pirates, then why don't the pirates just target the illegal fishermen? Rob them of their valuables and maybe even their fish/catch! Just leave the merchant vessels alone. You not only take care of the illegal fishing vessels, you also keep navies off your ass. Then, when the illegal fishing vessels get discouraged from fishing off Somalia, the fish will restock and you can go back to fishing. Everybody happy!

They have been doing this for many years and arresting illegall fishing vessels taking the fish or demended them taxes which they releazed them freely later without harm. but untill illegall fishing fleets armed themselves and fired any Somali fishermen, destroyed their fishing boats to prevent arrests or taxation. after that fishermen couldnt no longer fish any more ,illegalls came from all over the world with huge numbers things gone out of control as they also armed themselves. Nuclear Toxic waste which was another big problem since 1994 that killed may coastal people and animals. those people their lives was completely destroyed they made several demostrations for many years but totally ignored. They later regrouped them selves and declared volunteer coast guards to stop waste dumppings and and illegall fishing vessels

These poor somali fisherman are being forced to become pirates. They also have been forced to kill some of their hostages. They didn´t really want to do it, but they had no choice because the ransom wash´t paid or delayed.I am sure that the dutch TV crew and their families would have shown utmost sympathy if they themselves would have been taken hostage on the spot while filming. In fact it´s a little bit egoistic to not offer this to the pirates. Many families could have lived from that ransom.

The solution is so much cheaper than keeping naval forces on guard. Help them with food and employment programs. This makes me think that the navies and private mercenary companies don't want to solve the problem. The navies get to train and test weapons, as was stated in the video, and the mercenary companies get lucrative contracts. I don't think either wants to really stop the pirates. It's bad for their businesses.
