Then when called open to board ships and offer armed protection thru the worst areas then disembark and return to there floating base. It just blows my mind that the amounts of money these ship can be worth that armed protection isn't mandatory. Stuff can be replaced but not lives. because somewhere along the money trail someone from a government involved in the transaction is getting a cut. the proof is that the pirates aren't being blown out of the fucking water. just look into trying to get into security work on ships as an American. unless you have a background in military special operations you can pretty much forget about it. the US makes the maritime laws so ridiculously difficult its not worth applying. A friend and I looked into it a couple years ago, we both have served in the military both have over 20 years experience in LE, to include time on SWAT teams, certified firearms instructors and bunch of other shit that looks good on paper and we gave up before we got started. I think they know we American's have no fucks to give when it comes to those skinny's steal shit by force.

There is a simple solution to this problem. In World Wars 1 and 2, the Navy would escort ships to protect them from submarines. The system was called a convoy. Merchant ships would travel together as a convoy and would be flanked by warships. With today's technology, it would not be difficult to organize the current Merchant Navies with a flanking military craft capable of high speed rescue of any ship it is escorting. A single military craft could easily escort 20-30 (perhaps more) boats and provide lethal high speed protection when necessary. When compared with the ransom paid for a ships release, it would also be cost effective. They would mainly be used in areas identified as high risk.

Steve Samuel - I think the problem is political correctness. I have no issue with emptying 4-5 AK47 magazines at point blank over the side of a tanker. This would eliminate both the pirates and their boat. There is a video floating about of a mercenary actually doing this and the tanker then rammed the boat and shredded the pirate boat with its propeller and do-gooders screamed wrong, illegal, unfair, murder etc as the mercenaries gave them no chance of surrender (as if.....).
@jesses1589

There is such a high volume of merchant shipping these days. I think the most effective way of dealing with piracy is to allow high value ships to have an armory with at least semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols. Only the captain would be able to unlock and authorize use of these self defense weapons. Body armor is a waste of money if you cannot defend yourself. What shall we do?....they seem to think that a high pressure water hose is a good enough defense against men with automatic weapons.
@HistoryGe3k
@HistoryGe3k 6 жыл бұрын
Jesse Silver - there is an excellent business model here for a group like Blackwater that employs ex-SAS, ex-Navy Seals and ex-Special Forces calibre of ex-military personnel. They also need to be given indemnity from prosecution like they were in Iraq after the war (see no evil, speak no evil). They would form a small task force on each vessel to protect it. The task force would be responsible for their own armory of semi and fully automatic weapons, including heavy machine guns, sniper rifles, grenade launchers, pistols, and body Armour. This is the solution to the piracy problem.

Another solution is to put a bounty on the pirates. Then allow private companies like Blackwater to hunt the pirates. Private companies can be more flexible in their methods of trapping and arresting the pirates. The companies must also be given indemnity against prosecution as they were in Iraq.

Gladius pax - I am surprised that the Somali Nation does not have a Coast Guard. They are certainly entitled to enforce their borders including their Territorial waters as per every other sovereign Nation. Territorial Waters as defined by the 2013 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from the baseline (usually the mean low-water mark) of a coastal state. Waters outside the 12 Nautical Mile limit are International waters. No country can claim sovereignty over International Waters, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), but that doesn't mean that countries can't apply their laws or jurisdiction to events or people out there. Can get messy legally.
@HistoryGe3k
@HistoryGe3k 6 жыл бұрын
Gladius Pax - You could consider how much money is involved in piracy. Think about the additional insurance policies offered by various companies. Think about the additional security cost when cargo ships employ armed security contracting companies. It is in their interest that the piracy continues. Could it be possible that these groups with a financial stake in continued piracy may be encouraging or funding these same pirates? This is something to think about........

Gladius Paz - hopefully when they rebuild their country and infrastructure, they can pursue their EEZ rights through both the International Court system and their Coast Guard / Navy. For those following this discussion who are also unaware of EEZ rights (as I sadly was): "Definition: An Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a concept adopted at the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (1982), whereby a coastal State assumes jurisdiction over the exploration and exploitation of marine resources in its adjacent section of the continental shelf, taken to be a band extending 200 miles from the shore. Context: The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) comprises an area which extends either from the coast, or in federal systems from the seaward boundaries of the constituent states (3 to 12 nautical miles, in most cases) to 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) off the coast. Within this area, nations claim and exercise sovereign rights and exclusive fishery management authority over all fish and all Continental Shelf fishery resources. (Review of Fisheries in OECD Countries: Glossary, February 1998). " Source: stats.oecd.org/glossary/detail.asp?ID=884

Not the Indians. My first day in the 5th Fleet AOR in 2011, in the Indian Ocean, we spotted a pirate mothership towing two skiffs. My ship and two others stood back and shadowed from about 5 miles out. First, a Bear bomber marpat showed up and began circling. Then an Indian frigate arrived. The mothership refused to cut engines, so the frigate fired into the engine room, attempting to disable it. But it caught fire. The Indians rounded up the survivors, put em in on of those big 50 man survival rafts, and towed them off to the north toward Indian justice.

Because legally the commercial ships are under the legal banner of the country of origin, as well as Holden to the regulations of the parent company. Maritime law is weird, and superseded by a ships country of origin. If you had a boat flying say, a Swedish flag, and you went out into international waters, and threw someone overboard, the Swedish government is still within their right to charge you with a crime, even though there are technically no laws in international waters. All it really means is that no countries are allowed to claim waters more than I think it's 15 miles off the coast (one of the reasons China is building artificial islands about 30 miles apart off the coast of the Phillipnes and China) and that it probably won't benefit you much unless you are well connected and wealthy lol

If I was near someone house, with all the equipment needed to burglar a house, the police won't be like oh you are allowed to carry that equipment, we absolutely know that you were going to get i the house, but we have no evidence on which to detain you. No wonder there are so many pirates. zolbad juanrico I think it’s a little more complicated. You got to see this holistically. So the reason why pirating has increased is due to the poverty caused by too much foreign fishing in their waters, and so the people are desperate to earn money, and these cargo ships offer the best opportunity. What you seem to not understand is that now fishing is rare in these waters due to a lack of fish, so there is a problem with that logic as nice as it sounds

It's actually a well known fact that piracy around the horn of Africa was born out of povert and hunger caused by foreign fishing trawlers depleting the fishing stocks in that region. As much as 300 million Euro worth of fish was stolen out of Somalia's territorial waters, and if that wasn't enough the Italian mob also dumped massive amount of highly toxic industrial and even radioactive waste along Somalia's shoreline. So to compensate for no longer being able to live off of fishing due to foreign trawlers overfishing in their coastal waters, they started entering foreign fishing trawlers and demand them to pay a toll fee. That gradually progressed into the piracy that we now know. There are a couple countries who'se fishing fleet are infamous for illegally pillaging territorial waters of dozens of other countries all across the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Taiwan, China, and Italy are some of the worst offenders.

This same organization then gives its workers lessons in political correctness after two black people were asked to leave because they did not want to purchase anything. The decision to ask them to leave is ok as the tables are for CUSTOMERS. There have been times at other cafes or petrol stations where I have purchased a drink or petrol just so I could justify using their facilities. But to screw the farmers and their workers and then make their workers take classes in cultural awareness is ridiculous. By the way, I have never frequented Starbucks.

The tactics for protecting your ship are quite simple. In order to board your vessel, the pirates must first come along side with their boats. At this stage they are very vulnerable as it is now difficult to escape a counter offensive action. A professional mercenary (security) only needs to empty an AK47 point blank into the boat alongside the tanker. There is almost no opportunities for them to escape the lead coming down on them directly from above. You could either fire into the boat or the people climbing up the boat. The steel in the tanker would be strong enough to deflect any accidental damage. You could also use a 50cal sniper rifle but it is difficult to get a clear shot from a moving vessel and hit someone in a smaller fast moving vessel. The point blank solution is extremely effective. Just wait until they come alongside and empty several magazines at point blank range.

Let me see if I understand this: the pirates are thieves and killers but we should fell sorry for them. The threat of the pirates having greater firepower is blackmail and the human rights organization buys into it. The solution to the problem is overwhelming, assured and deadly force against the pirates. Throughout history, criminals and thieves have always existed and will continue to. However, to protect the ships, sailors and shipping lanes, they need to be blown out of the water without mercy. It is the only language they understand.

You didn't watch the whole film? These were simple fishermen. Commercial fishing vessels started to appear and completely eliminated their source of income. To get even they started taking ships hostage. What measures would you take if your only source of livelihood was taken away and you had to feed your family? Now, I'm not saying what they are doing is right and I don't condone piracy but the problem is political not militaristic. That said, rather than give them food and water I think if they are within "X" distance of a commercial vessel they ought to be destroyed. Sending a strong message is necessary.

i worked on ships all my life and have long been considered bad luck. i don't in the least, blame girls being on merchant ships, but it sure screws up the routine as some men treat them special and there is a certain discipline that needs to be kept and that tends to deteriorate. i have long retired and perhaps containerships and such need so little skills of wire splicing and setting up gear with miles of cargo, topping lift, vang wires and winches and working aloft.

The skipper of the destroyer from the EU says he's surprised at the civilian hardliners and that what they propose is far beyond what the military will accept. Well, gee, skipper, you keep on feeding the pirates and pointing them toward home, you're not doing anything to deter them. The skipper of the tanker says he's lost confidence in the military. HE should be running the fight out there and HE would put a stop to it. The navies of several countries wouldn't be needed if the merchant ships were armed with .50 caliber machine guns on each bridge wing. Let the people at risk of being held hostage solve the problem. The insurance companies would probably agree.

@@NXDL25 Imagine being a fisherman when the government collapses along with the navy, and foreign fishing ships fish the coast dry of practically all life. You need to feed your family but there is nothing you can do. Your country is a failed state with warlords ruling the country. They force you to become a pirate. You have three options. Die, with your family of starvation, refuse to become a pirate and be killed, or pirate and be killed by a European bullet. That's why pirate ships are so similar to fishing ships, because they are fishing ships. Piracy is wrong, horrific and life-threatening. There is no excuse for commiting a crime. The fear of seeing a skiff is bad enough let alone spending months in a small cabin or in a hot building in the middle of the desert eating barely any food all the while feeling that you are all alone and there's no one that cares about you and no one that can help. I'm not saying piracy is right or can ever be justified, I'm just saying look at it deeper. These people are not pirating for fun, and it's not like they can just go back to Somalia, wear a suit and tie and apply for a job. The world is simply a lot more complicated than that.

Here's some ideas from my relatively infertile mind - pour caustic soda on them, pour harsh acid on them, grease the decks, put glue on the decks (the kind that tears the soles of their feet off), electrify the railing or decks, pump high pressure sea water down on them when they get next to the ship (with robotic remote controlled water hoses), when they get along side the ship, drop a few gallons of gasoline on them (in something like flimsy plastic bags) and then drop some lit flares (even if it only ends up being a threat to do so), Drop fragile bags of flesh ripping glue on them when they get to the side of the ship, Or tear gas. I mean really, if they can't come up with non armed ways to defend themselves and discourage these pirates, then they aren't trying very hard.

スパルタン - I agree with you that the Government SHOULD be enforcing fishing rights inside its Territorial Waters and enforce all other rights of the Exclusive Economic Zones that it has internationally recognized legal rights to (very complex area of law). I fully support any Nation's efforts in enforcing their sovereign rights. However, the pirates are not attacking fishing boats but innocent freight vessels so this argument does not apply. These pirates are also being organized and run by warlords who are making millions out of this scam and not by poor fishermen, so again this argument does not apply. スパルタン - I did watch the video before commenting. I certainly do not support the actions of the foreign fishing vessels that have damaged their marine reserves and have already commented that Somolia's Territorial Waters and EEZ rights need to be protected and enforced. I would like to see these traditional fisherman return to the noble and honest trade of fishing as their forefathers have probably done for generations. I also agree that a number of people are making a lot of money out of the piracy including the warlords, the pirates working for the warlords, the insurance companies, the security companies, the companies offering security products, the various World Navies (Admirals justifying their existence), and the many industries building and supporting these Navies (the industrial military complex). It should also be noted that private mercenaries (armed security) on these boats in international waters will not have the ethics, discipline, or professionalism of a professional Navy as they are just professional paid killers. They simply work for the highest bidder and have allegiance only to the dollar. There is also a BIG difference between working as an honest and noble fisherman earning a humble living from the sea (as they have probably done for generations) and attacking innocent freight carriers and demanding twenty five million dollars ransom for release of the boat and crew. No comparison. A bit like saying I can not find a well paying job so I will break into your home and steal what I like or kidnap your family and hold them hostage for money. It is a criminal act that needs to be stopped and punished. I am also disgusted at that human rights spokesman. What about the human rights of the crews working on these freight vessels who have no connection with the international fishing vessels that have damaged their marine reserves. These freight vessels have no impact on the fishery reserves. A bit like stealing my car because someone stole your car. No justification.
