The course designer is asking too much of horse and rider for my liking, and much the same as Badminton this year. I used to love watching cross country, but I don't now, I don't like to see horses being pushed past their limit. And some of those fences are not horse friendly, and those bloody corner fences need to be banned, and the stupid width of the fence the poor horse got stuck on. This was a very tough course, and I believe quite badly designed and dangerous. Ask yourself, just how far can you push a horse, and is the risk of injury to horse and rider really worth it?. I think you probably know what my answer would be without me even saying it.

I read there have been several concerns and criticisms raised by riders about this year's course (first year for new designer) with formal requests to reviews some of the combination fences that were just too confusing and left riders with little time or ability to safely assess where they needed to be etc. I did notice mad excessive number and letting at one or two and few riders said it was these they couldn't work out their arse from elbow. Suddenly they were faced with a fence directly in front and had to "Shit shit shit go go we have to take this one!!" which explains why more riders than usual were giving a crack to their horse on approach and then retiring shortly afterwards. They quite rightly said it felt too deliberately confusing as though designed to leave horse and riders with little chance to make those assessments and adustments on the hop which you can't do when a slight mistake means a massive risk of serious injury. Be interesting to see what changes and little things have been tweaked by next year.

Just because neither horse nor rider died, does not mean they were okay. The impact on a horse's musculoskeletal system is immense, even if they get up and walk away from a fall. You would never willingly wish your horse to smash into a fence in a turnout field, but in the pursuit of money and a ribbon, "all riders and horses are fine"? Get a grip.

This. These horses are not “okay” at all. A lot had difficulty walking afterwards and you can tell that they are most certainly NOT okay. With the same jumps being refused and/or causing injuries you know they should not be included. This is just too far.

On top of that, adrenaline hides lots of the injuries. When the horse finally calms down you can see how bad it really is injured. Even when it walks away and looks fine at first it can die 30 minutes later when the adrenaline goes away

Whoever designed this course couldn't have been thinking about the saftey of horses or riders. This was a very dangerous course with lots of rotational fall not to mention horses falling over and getting stuck on fences these poor horses are going to be so sore and probably injured from throwing themself over huge and wide fences. This was really dangerous and I hope everyone is ok.

It is a shame nowadays course designers must make shit courses becouse there are too many shit riders and they would die if there is a little challenge..... Gonna be that person for a second to say I wish you'd ditch the “best” in the titles of these videos. Just “Falls and Refusals” will suffice but without any implication these are the most fun to watch. Appreciate everyone was OK but with every fall at XC it's more luck than management when both get up safe and sound.

The horse at 8.21 looked on the verge of collapse. The first fall shown, of the grey, the horse has injured it's off hind as it stood up and wasn't weight bearing. I bet many of these horses were actually injured. This sport is becoming unpleasant to watch. The fences seem designed to catch horses out. These poor creatures jump to their best ability but often just end up on the floor, having done nothing wrong, and only trying to obey their riders. It has become an unedifying spectacle, verging on the cruel. I write as someone who used to event 40 years ago.

You think it’s unpleasant now look up Burghley in the 1960-1990’s. The horses would crash, and the riders would get back on and keep going, hells bells!!! It doesn’t look it. People and horses still die. But technically it’s safer now. Seriously watch back in the day. Nuts!!!

Horses are not machines, nor able to see what we want them to do sometimes. It’s very physically demanding on the horse, and hard for them to rap their head around. Yes they can love jumping, but some of those lines Im sure no horse would willingly do. The whole point of this is for humans enjoyment, and not the horses. Just because they are doing it doesn’t mean they love it. (And I’m not saying this for all jumping and xc courses and events, just this whole event, and some others)

The fall at 1:40 looks rough but 1) great job to the horse for standing still and waiting for someone to help him and not freaking out, and 2) the rider jumping up and running to help their horse as soon as they saw the horse was stuck. I believe the horse was too stunned and exhausted to move. I also believe upper level eventing is in a high state of cognitive dissonance such that they try and justify the carnage. In some ways this seems no better than the spectacle of the gladiators, in that, the fallen were somehow less worthy than their opponents!

@@lizmaslin5258 If he was stunned or confused wouldn’t he have struggled? Also, if he didn’t get treated well, would he have even accepted the commands from his rider? At this level, I don’t think abuse is as common because of just how difficult it is to make a horse you have no bond with succeed in all 3 stages. Even with a strong bond, it’s difficult. Notice how his rider jumped up and stood next to him to try and keep him still and free him. Yes horses do die on these courses. If it’s an accident, that is understandable because no one can stop it after precautions were taken. If it’s abuse, it’s cruel but at least the horse is free from it now.

Interesting compilation to see how this years' course has passed the sweet spot into potentially dangerous vanity by the looks of things. Used to love watching xc as a child but no sport is ever worth undue harm to it's entrants, a slippery slope welfare always must be paramount. I hope they revise and tone-down whats' being asked next year as very lucky not to have even worse outcomes going by this upload. nice image quality and editing also.

(sorry for bad english) im gonna speak as an eventer here. i love doing xc, and wouldnt give up for anything. but honestly, i dont get how horse and rider can make it over some of these jumps without one or both being injured. i'm glad they're all ok, but some of these jumps are asking a lot/too much (example: the cottesmore leap) and i don't plan on doing some of these.

Omg 8:40 was just flapping like an idiot praying the horse was gonna save their ass. Whipped for the 1st water jump so the horse jumped then couldn't sit it and proceeded to do the exact same thing at the next and by the 3rd the horse said fuck ya 😂 goes to burlghy and their riding ability is lean back pull whip and pray my horse makes up for my shitness. The sport is turning from a sport where you know your horses limits and when they feel off, to pushing them over ridiculous jumps and asking for them to be injured. Cross country has turned from a lovely sport to watch to a sport where people just watch to see a horse get injured. To use the word "best" falls is ridiculous this is just showing that people are only interested in the horses getting injured. Don't get me wrong their are marvellous riders in the industry that put their horse as their first priority but some of these riders and shitty course designer are horrid to expect a horse to jump some of those combinations.

I would love for any of these riders to list and detail the reasons why it’s necessary to whip a horse so much (I counted 1 riding whip 5 times into 1 jump) and then have the FEI list and detail the reasons why they continue to allow this to happen. Followed by the govt listing and detailing the reasons why this isn’t covered by animal cruelty laws. And just for a bit of entertainment, these people probably call themselves animal lovers 😂

A lot of the horse and riders here were not fit and not up to the calibre of a 5* event hence so many falls refusals run outs and withdrawals. Burghley is a steep undulating course only made difficult by so many related distances and combination fences and shows up the wheat from the chaff in experience and skill. Sadly they were in their droves at this one. Also its dominated with way too much warmblood breeding and the courses are basically showjumping outdoors, little more than high class interval training. Bring back the 3/4 x ID I say and the lovely old fashioned galloping course!

This problem has been getting worse for decades. The course designers and the eventing industry keep saying they are making it safer but this shows something far different. I only competed up thru 3-day prelimary and that was back in the late 70s. But with greed and evil growing in mankind, all horse competitions are actually just cruelty to the animals.

A lot of these horses seem so disconnected with the riders and the riders seem so disconnected from their horse and what’s around them. This course too is just so complex for such a big height. All around these riders and these horses shouldn’t be riding in this situation. After watching the whole video I’ve come to the conclusion that some of these falls or refusals could have possibly been prevented if the riders could tighten their reins and actually properly balance their horses. Others should have had their horses well normalize with jumps like that and with big crowds with smaller jumps and technical lines. I’m convinced if some of these riders had their reins properly tightened and their horses balanced, they would have had the confidence to jump over those jumps and jump them well (by “jump them well” I mean not hit it and fall over). But don’t get my wrong, I think the course designer/designers are very much apart of this too. The water line was no where good. The horses couldn’t even recollect themselves from the thing they just went over at the speed and energy needed to pop over the next thing. Look, I’m sorry for being so rude in some peoples eyes but in my eyes, I’m telling the harsh truth and that sometimes needs to be told. Do people every test run these things anyways?

Some of the jumps this year were over complicated but others were unfortunate crashes due to lack of or too much speed, a horse refusing or maybe a horse slipping. These jumps are designed to test the pair but some were a bit too much.

I used to enjoy watching horses do cross country and the strength and bravery of horse and rider, but it’s now gone too difficult and dangerous, there is always a risk in most sports but it’s weighing up risk and this course went too far putting the lives of horses and riders at risk. Anyone who truly loves horses would not allow their horse to be tested on this stupidly dangerous course. I don’t believe the best horse won, it was pure luck who got round in one piece, all who finish this course should be grateful to still be alive.

The fact so many top combinations missed that corner after the leaf pit indicates there was a major design fail there, and there shouldn't have been that many rotational falls. The guy on the dark horse at 07.53 should have been pulled up by the stewards, as the horse was exhausted and walked away lame following that fall.

Some have the frangible (spelling?) pins and some do not. It also seems to depend on the angle/force with which they are hit. As a hunter/ jumper rider I am certainly no expert on x country jump construction.

I like cross, it's really impressive, but that race was poorly designed, when all horses struggles ont he same obstacle, it's not anymore an error of the rider or the horse

The amount of danger these horse are put in is simply ridiculous! And for what? For rider and viewer, enjoyment and thrill! Even if they have nothing "broken" the amount of pain they must feel after falling on themselves or crashing their legs against a huge solid jump over ridiculous terrain. This is honestly appalling! And no horses don't like to jump this! Imagine throwing your body at full speed again a tree or on to the floor. You'd probably break bones! Why would we willingly put our horses through that risk?

Yes I agree but that's the exact direction eventing seems to be going. I think this will eventually lead to the demise of the sport. However I will say that the 2022 Burghley was a much tamer version than the 2019 Burghley where horses where falling like crazy. (As if that was any consolation!)

It's been a very long time since I've ridden cross country but it seems that the obstacles and course designs have gotten way demanding, complicated and dangerous for both horse and rider. The horses are balking and falling over the same obstacles, there's something wrong.

I love horses and cross country but you are only hurting you horse running this course. I hope someone can tell me I'd someone was able to finish the whole paecour without missing a jump or missing couple of jumps and how many failed

The horse number 38 deff did get hurt from that even if it's just a small thing cause when they walked away you could see he was sometimes not Properly setting the foot.

The difficulty is that these top horses haven’t been out as much over the Covid period, so for some almost 3yrs. The courses designed, to me, seemed like a good step from 2019/20 tracks. The issue is that some combinations just may not be ready. There’s only so much preparation you can do but at the end of the day competitions are completely different. Just look at the police horses for the jubilee and funeral, bomb proof horses, trained daily, you possibly wouldn’t say the occasions were to difficult and testing like these courses as that’s what they’re expected to do but mentally the horses and maybe the riders weren’t ready to be under pressure…

There was some bad riding but there were also a lot of sympathetic riders who understood the mistake, did not punish and either tried again or signaled out.

@@gottasay4766 There's a very distinct feel and atmosphere at Burghley I'm not sure what it is or how to explain it but many competitors say BHT is their favourite of the lot for similar reasons. Just a lot of love, spectators that are so supportive, encouraging and make sure every faller, refusal and rider that just calls it and retires is given a rapturous applause for a superb effort. Felicity Collins calling it after that near miss at 6:20 is a perfect example of how the overwhelming majority know and respect their horses when they've had enough. I do recall a few years ago when one horse refused and the rider (can't remember her name but she was a US rider) really cracked him two or three times in quick succession but in sheer temper and frustration. It wasn't a tap to wake him up either it was sheer anger and every spectator gave a loud collective “Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhh” in disapproval and pretty much shamed her into retiring. You almost never see that type of poor rider though fortunately.
