The three guys watching at the front in the middle are The Jam, who played on the show just before Joy Division came on

All four members have completely different playing styles...erratic, technical, controlled, confident... Watching them, they don't seem to mesh together...but they make the most unique music. It's almost like 4 bands that have never played together and are jamming for the first time and the result is amazing!

Yes man you are right, Ian is so intense, Bernard so correct, Peter so relax and serious and Stephen a complex machine, but they are so talented in their own ways, this band is too much for its time.

It wasn’t too much for us in 1979. I was mesmerised by this performance of “She’s Lost Control” at the time. I still am. I also made a line recording off the TV onto cassette. It’s on a CD now of course, and all over the internet. It still makes my blood course faster. I still play guitar and bass for this reason. Looking at that year now, I realise what a potent year 1979 was for music. I couldn’t afford to buy “Unknown Pleasures” straight away. I had bought “London Calling” and had to get “Metal Box” in a metal box. “Setting Sons” wasn’t the very best Jam, but their singles that year were powerhouses. The Banshees hit their stride. The Slits single. Even The Swell Maps. The Only Ones. Some of the old farts were still pretty powerful performers as well. I nearly forgot The Fall. Buzzcocks were starting to feel the pinch, but what singles. You could go and see these acts for a relative pittance in halls or theatres. I’m rarely nostalgic. I enjoy now. I make more music now than I did then. However I have come to realise that we were able to browse so much of music relatively easily even without an internet. John Peel and an FM radio gave you a lot to chew on, especially with a cassette deck to hand. I am indebted to the people who post stuff like this video.

Diggarci. An astute remark. Just now I was admiring the precision of Barney’s rhythm playing on “She’s Lost Control”. Tight rhythm guitar was my only musical skill at the time. I could relate. Of course Barney was about much more than just chords. Wonderfully sparse playing. After that “Metal Box” changed my world. Rhythm guitar suddenly seemed boring. The redundancy of rhythm guitar made me crave playing bass instead. These days I play in a band in which the bassist and I swap instruments sometimes. Go figure.

This live version of She's lost control is one the finest things on youtube. Everything about it is top draw, I love the bass guitar especially. What a display by Curtis, so unique and what a great frontman he was. Imagine being able to go back in time and witness this performance.
@andrewridge28245 жыл бұрын
Scott1433 I only witnessed this performance on TV, I’m afraid. I did see them supporting Buzzcocks shortly after this broadcast. Sadly it was one of those nights on which Curtis was carried off the stage in seizure. Not the kind of history you ever wish to see being made. I remember the TV show with great fondness. The Bournemouth concert less so.

Big time Joy Division fan from the start! Every one wants to claim them, Punks, Goths, but truth be told, they were neither. They were simply original Rock and Roll! And they were Great at it too.

I don't think I've ever seen desperation portrayed in dance before

I read a comment maybe in This is Permanence but it was along the lines that Ian danced that way to offer a third second of third layer to the music. What you heard what you thought And what you saw. The dance was almost sign language expressing the song visually.

@andrewridge28245 жыл бұрын
Ian Curtis was already struggling to balance work and life by this time. Wilson did right to leave him on the bench for the interview. Curtis was by then starting to have seizures on stage. Shortly after this broadcast I witnessed one of them. I wish I hadn’t. History is sometimes better, observed from a distance. It is so sad. By the mid-eighties there were anti-epileptics that did not make you feel you were depressed all the time.

They aren't Rock and Roll either! Hooky actually says they are alternative, (many different genres), so categorizing them like that isn't very fare. Just listen to how they pioneered electronic music!

Their "lack of musicality" Oh? Why say that? You do not think JD had any talent?
@kylabotting10 жыл бұрын
Okay, well to each their own i guess....But i think Hooky(Peter) is an amazing bassist.Not just in Joy Division but in New Order and his new band Peter Hook and The Light...I think if you ask any bassist they will agree that Peter Hook is one of the best bass players around...Just my opinion...maybe you might like to do your research before you make such comments.
@kylabotting10 жыл бұрын
I was not speaking on behalf of ALL bass players, just Peter Hook. And he is a talented musician. Um, where did the spanking research come into this?
