I see the plug on the factory supplied mic has 3 " divisions " on the plug but the mic you say works well only has 2 " divisions " . Do you think this has something to do with it ?

Factory mic should only have 2 sections It's not stereo. Maybe you got a 1 off one

Did you have to adjust any mic setting on the head unit?

There is no adjustment on the Android 10 models so no. On the Android 12 units you can make adjustments.

No I don't. I just tuck it under the headliner. A plastic trim tool helps push the wires underneath it
