Much appreciated, Etra! While I normally say gyro controls are easier to implement than people think, the trackball was the opposite -- can't just use the raw velocity when the user pressed the button, because the button press itself tends to bump the controller, and then you end up making the bump worse by using that velocity. I'm pleased with how it feels now, though :)

Really cool updates! The 'Gyro Trackball' mode is something that I feel will lead Gyro players to eventually using a technique called 'Racheting', which is something I and other users of the Razer Hydra (an old PC motion controller from 2010) use as a solution to the centering/repositioning issue with motion controls. Racheting is basically using a button to enable the input, and releasing it when you want to re-center. It's really natural and I found it to be the best way to use motion controls. If you want an example you can check my channel as I've been using the Hydra that way for 6+ years and have a lot of videos there using that method.
@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard the term "ratcheting" much, but yeah, in practice that's what I advocate for rather than a "reset" button :) gyrowiki.jibbsmart.com/blog:good-gyro-controls-part-1:the-gyro-is-a-mouse#toc10 I know at least one JSM user has the right stick mapped to other in-game functions, so ratcheting is literally the only way to control the camera. Hi Cabbage! Sorry I missed this comment. It was marked as spam for some reason, but it's clearly not. Close range can get really chaotic. If you play with a high gyro sensitivity, it could be good to rely on that more. i see this project has become something you take seriously. Good work. Some observations/suggestions: @2:54. kind of know the answer & at the risk of sounding dumb, but why not try to track the DS4 light bar with a webcam? Besides obvious possibilities at the least gyro drifting would be minimized. But maybe is just too much work for little gain? Speaking in general, it seems DS4 should be the sort of "defacto" controller to support, since it's features are the most suited for this type of aiming (steam controller aside). i've been saying for years that controllers need to include grips, specially if using Gyro aiming, so the thumb is always resting on the stick. The DS4 while optionally is the only 2 handed controller (again steam con aside) that has them. Well & also not counting split Joycons, since people just don't like them. @3:37 This exactly is were split joycons/controllers have an advantage. You can use the left Joycon to control the leaning while you control aiming with the right hand. The setup works perfectly >;D
@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
Hi Etrigan! From what I hear, tracking the DS4's light is a good solution. I usually focus on solutions that are useful for as many people as possible, though, and a lot of people don't play with a camera. I'd be interested to explore it myself in future. On your point about split Joy-Cons for lean bindings, that's a good observation! It's actually precisely why I made it so you can have gyro only work with one controller and lean bindings / motion stick only work with the other in JSM 2 :)
@Refreshment013 жыл бұрын
@@JibbSmartGD Thx for the time to reply. A thing i've wonder for years & since you are into interface exp, maybe you have an opinion, basically a Virtual Joystick implementation: Say take the L Joycon (with strap) vertically with the thumb resting on ZL/L buttons, index & ring fingers on SL/RL (ARMS like setup) now the HD Rumble is used to give directional & intensity cues depending on how much the Virtual Joystick is leaned. Do you think it would be close enough to thumbstick for most action 3D games navigation like 1st/3rd person shooters? In regards to this since actuators are getting smaller/faster i think within a couple of years down the line a weight distribution system inside motion controllers would be possible, so much of the feedback advantages of the thumbsticks would be minimized.

Anyway you can support the 8bitdo sn30 pro + so that you can use every feature on it? [EDIT] OK, there's compile issues on current builds on Linux and there's no way to map back to button inputs-- I am just going to go back to Steam Inputs and quietly wait in the shadows until such a time that it is deemed necessary. Again, thank you for your hard work (and the contributors too!) and I can't wait to see this fully fledged out someday. Hey, quick question... Would this be good and or work on a fightstick? I forget what the configuration/input method is exactly, but mine has X/D-inputs and Nintendo Switch (but I typically use a 'generic' option, highlighted purple instead of the usual red for Switch) I have a game I play with held /toggle modifiers on Steam input, and I'd like to switch- as long as there's no additional input lag (or same as Steam, which I don't even know if there is) Second, cause you don't provide binaries... how hard is it to compile and run through commands on Linux? I skimmed the Github and didn't notice Linux instructions beyond compiling. I can compile it just fine, I just didn't get a chance to read the documentation (Edit: just saw there's an AUR pkgbuild, prob gonna try to work with that- I can prob get it working without anyway) Sorry if that was a little long, and thank you for the great work you're doing! hey (I know I'm making a lot of comments here you can just refer me to another means of messaging you if you want) you should map turning off gyro onto the L2 or R2 button(s) and making it so it changes your sensitivity on the fly depending on how hard you press and with a full press disabling gyro also with an inversion option on this as well (not pressing the L2 or R2 button disabling it requiring you to press it down all the way) this as an option for people who may prefer it that way. I do believe this will reduce the necessity of flick stick however not entirely this could allow for the stick to be simply used as a 180` rotation and make room for addition inputs for the left, right, and forwards angle on the stick. I could see a (minor) problem with this involving games like GTAV with driving but I don't see it being that big of an issue unless something else comes up that I didn't realize

You can change the STICK_ACCELERATION_RATE to have the sensitivity increase while the stick is at full tilt, STICK_ACCELERATION_CAP to limit how high it can accelerate to, and set LEFT/RIGHT_STICK_DEADZONE_INNER/OUTER. This should cover most of the options games normally provide. Some games also usually warp the input direction to be closer to the nearest axis -- they tend not to expose this option to users, and we don't have a way to do that in JSM yet. Also, some games provide a "damping" option, where stick sensitivity ramps up from 0 or a smaller value to begin with. We don't have that option yet either. These are options I've been meaning to explore for a while, but haven't been a high priority. Flick stick hasn't changed much since before version 1.0, because it's intrinsically much simpler than traditional stick aiming, which needs a lot of work to try and keep up with the needs of regular gameplay.

I have just discovered your channel and this magnificent tool of yours. I have always been gaming with mouse and keyboard and now I only use ps4 controllers for gaming. Is it possible maybe with joyshockmapper to lock the pitch control of the gyro to the camera control for looking up and down? I believe this way the camera angle won't change if you look too far up or down. I hope you will reply because at this moment this is bothering me the most with gyro gaming.
@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm glad you're enjoying it :) Unfortunately JoyShockMapper can't know the in-game camera pitch, and so it can't lock real world pitch and camera pitch together. I think it's better to think of it as a mouse, anyway, with all the benefits that has -- customisable sensitivity, being a big one

Gyro sensitivity is 0 by default. Did you set it to something else? Eg: GYRO_SENS = 1 Also, DS4 bluetooth gyro doesn't work with JSM for some people. I just hadn't thought about the gyro as a mouse "^^ But I'm very curious how you managed to make that motion stick so smooth. At my best I can only do the trick with the accelerometers but they're a bit shacky. How did you solve that if I may ask so I could maybe find a way to code that into another Freepie-Script? :) Or do you maybe even plan to add Wiimotes & Nunchuck at some point? Anyway thanks for all the great work your doing. :)
@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm so glad you've been able to do cool things with Freepie, and that my work has been helpful :) Do you have the MotionPlus attachment for your Wiimote? It provides gyro. My motion stick combines gyro and accelerometer to get a more reliable gravity vector. If you only have accelerometer (like a Wiimote without the MotionPlus attachment), I think there's no way to reliably separate acceleration due to gravity from other acceleration. Wiimote support would be very cool :) I don't have one myself, but it's always possible. If someone added support in SDL2, that'd work in JoyShockMapper, since that's the controller library it uses now.

@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
You can set the controls to whatever you want by editing the config :) I like to shoot with R1 instead of R2 because it's better positioned for keeping the controller steady and, on a DualShock 4, much more responsive than using a trigger. But you can swap them by swapping the R and ZR mappings in the config. You can also change the axes. The current defaults are best for most people (yaw = yaw makes the most sense) but you can use roll if you want with: MOUSE_X_FROM_GYRO_AXIS = Z All the different things you can do are listed and explained in the README. I don't know of a way to use Pro Builder, since there's no way to use it on keyboard and JSM can only map to keyboard and mouse.

Hey Gyro Gaming, if you see this comment I just want to tell you that I've discovered a way to use your program wirelessly with the Dualshock 4 controller. All I did was just install *reWASD* into both my PC and laptop, and they both started to work wirelessly every time I start the JoyShockMapper application. I start moving my controller when the USB wire isn't connected, and JoyShockMapper starts picking up movement signals. I don't know what reWASD did to both of my computers, but even when the reWASD appilcation is not running (when I check my task manager) it still allows me to use your application you've created wirelessly. Even after the 15 day trail ends. (Because you have to pay in order to have reWASD forever). (Edit) I discovered this in the 2.1.0 version of JoyShockMapper, so this might just be useless information.
@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the heads-up! I'd heard here and there that it could be fixed by using reWASD or Steam at the time of connection, because they were correctly enabling the gyro on wireless controllers. The latest version of JoyShockMapper (2.2) has this fixed, so wireless PlayStation controllers (DualShock 4 and DualSense) should work properly now (although some people have reported they had to restart JSM or use the command RECONNECT_CONTROLLERS to make it work after the first attempt).

@JibbSmartGD3 жыл бұрын
Every txt file is just a bunch of commands that are run one after the other. You can make it so that a command is run at the press of a button by binding it to a button in quotes. For example: N = "RIGHT_STICK_MODE = AIM" means when you press the North face button (triangle on a DS4), the command "RIGHT_STICK_MODE = AIM" will be entered into JoyShockMapper, setting your right stick to traditional aiming. I'm pretty sure any legal command at all can be put in quotes to be run later, and this includes loading a file. I hope that helps you get started!
