Hey,@@JibbSmartGD can I use JSM to remap the controller's gyro to the sticks(for racers)? I recently came across your creation while trying to use android devices as gyro controllers for PC FPS (I know it's a stretch, but you can imagine why I wanted to). So after watching all your videos I've ordered a DS4 even though I've never tried a controller, I hope the wireless support will be sorted soon 😃. I'm just a casual player in FPS but more interested in racers. I know steam could do that remapping for me but JSM is more tunable so I'd prefer to use that.Thanks to you I'll finally drive (virtual) cars full analog on my PC sooner(without a steering wheel setup)

Man, it's crazy that the company focused on PC where gamepads are optional is supporting gyro aiming more than the companies focused on consoles where gamepads are the standard input. Next it would be nice if Valve would encourage devs to let mouse and gamepad be used simultaneously so these features could be utilized more easily.

Steam seems to handle ALL Gyros with a 16:9 ratio, Track pads with mouse input however are perfectly 1:1. To make X&Y equal for the Gyro, Y needs to be 77.77% higher than X. The only way to fix this in Steam is to set the Vertical Scale to .890 which results in a 78% increase. I do wish Steam notices this problem and fixes it, as it is giving me mild OCD.
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for breaking down the maths on that. It's a tricky one, because a lot of players will be relying on it working the way it already works, even though it doesn't make sense. But I do agree it should be fixed somehow.
@WavePattern42
@WavePattern42 4 жыл бұрын
@@JibbSmartGD No problem. I imagine they must have chose this weird ratio for "desktop comfort". I only have a 16:9 monitor, so I haven't been able to test if a 4:3, 16:10, or 21:9 (Ultra Wide) changes the sensitivity ratio. Although, changing Windows Display Resolution doesn't affect the ratio at all. Steam rounds it's numbers in the VDF file, which is why I settled on .890 for 78%, with the other option being .885 for 77%.
@EpsilonRosePersonal

@@WavePattern42 I wonder if they're doing it for compatibility reasons, to make sharing configs easier?
@WavePattern42
@WavePattern42 4 жыл бұрын
@@EpsilonRosePersonal I think that might be it. I noticed that Steam scales sensitivity so it's same on different Monitor Resolutions with the same 16:9 Ratio (720, 1080, 1440, 4k). Think of 1:1 sensitivity as a Square, Steam takes that and scales it the in same way that Windows scales a Square Wallpaper when set to Stretch. This distorts the Image, or in our case Sensitivity, vertically to fit on the screen. What Steam should do is use a horizontal based method of scaling, or what Windows calls Fill. This still scales to other resolutions, while also preserving a perfect 1:1 ratio.

Thanks :) As far as I know, Steam doesn't have such an option. JoyShockMapper doesn't yet, but I'm looking into a kinda hacky solution in the near-ish future. Generally, I encourage players to just have a "gyro off" button instead of a re-centre button. We don't have a re-centre button when using the mouse, even though the mouse sometimes needs to be "disabled" (lifted off the mousepad) and re-centred manually, and that actually works really well. It lets players reposition even if their point of interest is above or below the player instead of centred on the horizon. It's also more useful for horizontal repositioning without having to counter-turn with the stick.

JoyShockMapper doesn't do this, but yes, this should work. I think unfortunately it'd work best with pitch and *roll* (not yaw), since the accelerometer can give us the gravity vector and cancel out drift, while drift in yaw is unavoidable. For most players, I believe pitch and *yaw* is more natural because of its similarity to using a remote or Wiimote.

For example: disable the right stick vertical axis and let the horizontal axis act as a regular mouse to emulate the way splatoon 2 works (trying to up my aim)? i feel that if gyro is always enabled (which flick stick is) rather than activated by a button press (as in, hold down LT to activate gyro), then the gyro is liable to desync with your controls after a while of playing, and drift or like shift over. how is this handled on a flick stick mapping in a game where you dont have a controller button to spare for recalibration?
@threemothsETC
@threemothsETC 3 жыл бұрын
to clarify, i've read some other comments on this video where you said that you have a button mapped to disable gyro so you can readjust your controller. in a game in which all buttons are used, and none can be spared, is flick stick going to be less effective for this reason?
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 3 жыл бұрын
For most games, there's usually a button that can be combined with "gyro off". For example, almost every shooter on console these days has a button that you can tap for reload and hold for interact (open doors, press buttons, etc). The same can work with another button -- tap to melee attack, toggle crouch, throw grenade, or whatever; hold to disable the gyro. This is what I do in most of my configs if there isn't room. A backup option is to have gyro be disabled while the flick stick is tilted, but I'd consider that a last resort.
@set-theory
@set-theory 4 жыл бұрын
Do you lot find that with gyro you end up looking too far up or too far down and have to correct the vertical positioning of your controller frequently? I've had flick stick at the back of my mind for a couple months ever since I saw a video about the life and death of the steam controller. (The very same video informed me that (a) gyro exists and (b) my steam controller what I'd owned for 2 years had it). Seeing flick stick on Steam was cool and I tried it out with doom to decent effect (most of my problems stemmed from being completely un-used to using a controller, so this doesn't really reflect on the control scheme, and motion sickness from very fast turns). My major issue was that after a fight I'd end up holding my controller in an uncomfortable, weird angle and then had to figure out how I'd get my character to look straight while getting my controller into a neutral position. The steam solution of only using gyro while your thumb is on the right joystick is great for joystick + gyro, but doesn't work as well for flick stick because it's hard to rest your thumb on the stick and not accidentally turn too far. A "make the character look to 0 degrees vertically" button wouldn't go amiss, but that would have to be built into the game itself. I want to know if this is something other people feel, or if it's a problem that I'll quickly get over. Or even if it's a problem with my hardware, perhaps my gyro is damaged and has too much vertical velocity. Any anecdotes or advice would be much appreciated.
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 4 жыл бұрын
I personally always make sure I have a button that disables the gyro when it's held. That means I can always reposition the controller without messing with my view. It's basically the same as how we use a mouse -- if we get to the edge of the mousepad or we anticipate needing more room, we lift the mouse up (temporarily disabling it) and reposition it. I'll usually combine this with another button -- for example, tap Circle to crouch, hold circle to disable the gyro. It can be cumbersome at first (as is using a mouse for the very first time), but as you get used to it, just like with mouse, you'll get into the habit of repositioning without even thinking about it at opportune moments -- while reloading, during a break in the action, etc.

I discovered your channel and your work only a few days ago. It is kind of exciting to see this concept of absolut input, that is flick stick, be implemented on a major platform so soon after being made aware of it. After a bit of research (searching y-positioning on KZbin leads to the earliest example), I found out that soon after Splatoons release in 2015 players figured something similar to flick stick out. The recenter function works of off the direction your character is facing, which is controlled by the right analog stick. So if you turn your character and press the Y button to recenter it acts as the flick stick in that case. Not as elegant or as universally applicable, but there nonetheless. I also can't make my JoyCons work properly. They seem to update both analog and gyro input far slower than in your demonstrations. It is especially wierd, since the Pro Controller works perfectly fine. Any idea why that could be?

Quick question: For gyro aiming in a 3d game do you recommend using Real World Calibration or Gyro Sensitivity options to increase or decrease freedom of aiming without loss in smoothness?
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 3 жыл бұрын
I generally recommend not changing Real World Calibration once it's correct. A correct RWC and In Game Sens should mean your Gyro Sens options use real world values -- 1 for 1:1 turning, etc. Correct RWC and In Game Sens means flick stick will work correctly, too. Gyro Sens can then be changed as needed without messing with flick stick. I'm guessing by "without loss of smoothness" you mean due to whatever rounding is happening in all the calculations. I think the best solution there is for your actual in game sensitivity to be very low, as this means the smallest possible mouse movement translates to a very small in game turn

Hey, what are your thoughts on acceleration with gyro aiming? I’ve always heard that acceleration is bad for mouse aiming as it means you can’t build proper muscle memory, is this different with gyro aiming?
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Acceleration is useful when the player doesn't have much room to move their mouse. It's the same with gyro -- it can be a good way to get more range and still keep the precision of a lower sensitivity. It also depends on the implementation. Most don't have a cap, which is why building muscle memory for flicks is so hard. A cap means you can still have consistency with reasonably fast movements and build muscle memory no sweat

This is cool and all, but there should be an option for flick in ALL directions. It would feel like a trckpad. The firearm recoil gradually raises the gyro aim point. If I don't use the Y axis of the R stick, my wrist will bend forward or my character will see the ceiling. Doom and Portal both have zero recoil so it's ok, but are there any issues like this when playing other fps games?
@JibbSmartGD
@JibbSmartGD 3 жыл бұрын
Most mouse-aim games are pretty light on the recoil. Console games like to do it because sticks can keep countering it forever without having to reposition, and aim assist makes it relatively easy to manage. When played with JSM on PC, Overwatch has some recoil but counters it automatically (maybe requires some fiddling with the settings). CSGO's recoil works by offsetting from the crosshair rather than constantly pitching the camera, so it's manageable. Quake doesn't have recoil. I didn't have issues with Apex Legends, CoD Warzone, Crysis, Halo, Shadow Warrior 2, Destiny 2, Superhot, Serious Sam 3, Devil Daggers... pretty much anything I've tried has had either no recoil or only a manageable amount.

Steam's gyro controls are good -- better than I've seen in any game natively. JoyShockMapper offers mostly even better options: natural sensitivity scale, better smoothing (so it doesn't add any input lag to almost all movements), better acceleration options, and better deadzone options. One advantage Steam has is its nicer interface. And very recently, Steam added the option for automatic gyro calibration. If you frequently need to recalibrate your gyro (like, multiple times in one play session), this is a great option to have, and it's something JoyShockMapper doesn't have. If your controller doesn't need recalibrating very frequently, manual calibration offers more reliability and precision.

Hello. I am using flick stick with Alan Wake and a Nacon controller. Everything seems to work fine. I have always been a Steam controller supporter but the horrible polling rate of the gyro (easily noticeable above 60fps) makes me want to ditch it. That is why now I will be using a PS4 dual stick controller (they have better gyroscope) and your flick stick comes really in handy for shooters, especially because there is NO touch sensor on which to bind "activate gyro" (no touch sensor on the right analog stick and no right touchpad like steam controller has). Flick Stick kind of makes things easier with this hardware limitation (of not having a touchpad or a touch bind to assign to it). Just a simple question: if Flick Stick is using mouse joystick as an input, why is there stutter in 360 camera panning? Alan Wake is completely smooth (100fps steady). If I use Flick Stick on RDR2 though, there is some micro stutter while turning and I don't understand why. Mouse Joystick input camera is completely smooth, but flick stick rotation gives a lot of stutter, no matter how much smoothing I set to it. These are the only 2 games I tried with flick stick (same controller) so can't compare to others.
