Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Gameplay Information:
The standalone expansion to the award-winning Total War™: SHOGUN 2 explores the conflict between the Imperial throne and the last Shogunate in 19th century Japan, 400 years after the events of the original game. A dramatic clash of traditional Samurai culture with the explosive power of modern weaponry.
Guide ancient Japan into the modern age, as the arrival of America, Britain and France incites a ferocious civil war which will decide the future of a nation.
-----
Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai Features:
Dramatic 19th century Japan setting
Based on the backdrop of the Boshin War period, the new campaign starts in 1864, a time of growing resentment against Western colonial power and influence. As Japan begins to modernise and industrialise, the inevitable social and economic changes lead to increasingly militant nationalism and antipathy towards the Shogunate.
6 new playable clans
Play as a clan supporting the Imperial throne, or the last Shogunate:
Shogunate clans: Aizu, Nagaoka, Jozai
Imperial clans: Choshu, Satsuma, Tosa
New foreign powers
The American, British and French nations play an important part in the story of the Boshin war, and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
New 19th century Japan campaign map
The new island of Ezo extends the SHOGUN 2 campaign map northwards.
Fully refreshed towns and other campaign map features reflect the new time period, with railways making their first appearance in a Total War title.
Campaign map railways
Develop your own railway network to move armies and agents between your regions.
Railways can be sabotaged and transport can be blocked by enemy armies who take control of parts of the line or stations.
39 new land units
Including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
New units can also be recruited from foreign powers, including the British Royal Marines, US Marine Corps and French Marines.
10 new naval unit types with a total of 21 ships
New steam-powered warships, heavily armed with modern artillery.
This new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port.
The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
New land and sea unit interactions
During a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
Conversely, costal gun emplacements can target enemy ships during port siege battles, when ending their turn within the range of upgraded coastal defences.
Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
3 new agent types
The Foreign Veteran, the Ishin Shishi and the Shinshengumi.
Each new agent has its own skill tree, and Ninja and Geisha agents have had their skill trees updated with new abilities.

I love that starting unit of this clan. So OP, can deploy outside normal deployment zone and it did rekt 6 enemy units alone on my campaign within a short period of time, very accurate and perfectly hidden.

I loved the video overall but there is one thing in general that you shouldn't worry about and that's the quality of fields in Fall of the Samurai due to the fact that fields in Fall of the Samurai are entirely broken and won't matter if you end up with a province that has barren soil since all field quality make the same income when developing to higher tier fields. So yeah. That's one thing that Creative Assembly has never had the thought on fixing when the dlc came out xD. Overall loved the video :3

*LE GASP!* You're welcome and am a fan of your videos/ work. You're so freaking awesome and it's awkward coming from me a person posing as one of the three great daimyo of the Sengoku period. Gahhhhhhhh! OuO Day has been made. Also you should probably also mention the foreign trade depot and the Western marine units (French Marines, U.S. Marines, British Marines) since although those are units you'd get later in the game, they'd come hand to hand with certain clans that have traits that'll give them good buff increases making them already more stronger than their original stats.
@MrSmartDonkeyLP
@MrSmartDonkeyLP 7 жыл бұрын
Certain clans might make them stronger, but that would go for every unit of that clan due to traits. The units themselves still aren't unique to the clan, so not worth the mention.

You may know this by now, but the bug you described only applies to the text pop-up on the farms on the campaign map... the field income displayed on the pop-up is always for barren soil. The actual income you will receive is correct - it's just not displayed on that pop up. In reality: Barren = what you see is what you receive, Meager = 1.3x, Average = 1.5x, Fertile = 3x, Very fertile = 3.5x the value displayed on the pop up. tl;dr: farm fertility does work, it just isn't displayed on the pop-up bubble correctly. You get the correct income based on fertility quality.

Donkey, from my latest experience in Jozai Legendary mode (which I get wasted in 5 turns cuz backstabbing Edo) That "+2% move speed" isn't small at all. What I found out is that Yugekitai runs at the same speed as Yari Kashi/Yari Samurai with Rapid Advance activated, and when Yari Kashi run out of that ability, Yugekitai will outrun them. Even better is that Yugekitai has better stamina than Yari Kashi! Yari Kashi tired out before them! This mean that they can, theoretically, kite any unit that's not artillery, skirmisher or cavalry with ease. But perhaps that's Yugekitai and not the overall though.

Great overview I just started a Jozai campaign, the Edo quickly turned on me and went to war with me as soon as I took Hitachi I thought it was odd then you mentioned it here. Buggers they are!
@hieniemic

Maybe it was programmed to do so. Historically, the Jozai domain had been very loyal to the Shogunate, until the late Boshin war, when they refused to go to Ezo (Hokkaido) with other Tokugawa forces and surrendered the Imperial forces. The strange thing that doesn't match is that Edo should not abandon Jozai that early in the game.

I managed to beg the Edo to ally with me though, The Edo always supported me by destroying any Enemy naval force that raided my trade routes or bombarded my cities. They were crucial for my victory since they helped me take out the fleet guarding the small island to the right of Tokushima that connects the Tosa and Tokushima to the main island. I don't know why the Edo hates you though. Maybe you broke one of their treaties?

Great arguments about my favorite clan, though I disagree with your suggestion of scuppering the ships, as I find them to be useful for several reasons. First, if you place the ships nearer to the shore of Shimosa, you can have the target area encompass the city, thus allowing for the ships to provide some needed artillery support. Second, the ships could later be used for exploration purposes, giving you a wide range for your maps. Finally, I find that the ships are also valuable in interdicting trade routes, which denies your enemies valuable trade assets that they could use to bolster their states' positions.

As I mentioned in the video, I'm talking Legendary difficulty, where upkeep is highest. If you're willing to spend several hundred koku on something that doesn't really do much and severely hemorrhaging your economy with it that's up to you. On lower difficulties it's not as much of an issue, but on Legendary I just don't see it as a wise decision.

I always feel weird including armstrong guns for clans who have special skirmishers: tosa and jozai. Basically the spirit of skirmishers is to harass people outside of their range. If you do not include artilleries in your army, the broken enemy AI will stay in their position. Now you can simply use skirmishers to harass them from range. If they approach, you can retreat to a safer position with heavy gunfire protection of line infantries. Anyway, armstrong guns are good but not perfect. Especially when you need army campagin movement speed and do not have naval transportation (very usual becaue naval battles are annoying and rarely enemy sends a great navy to invade you in FOTS), armstrong guns can prevent you from quickly moving. I would always say that land battles themselves are easy to win, the large campaign tactics (where movement flexibility is everything) is more important when it comes to FOTS. Honestly, I'd rather include more skirmishers in my army as long as my enemy do not have armstrong guns to counter my tactics.

In my playthrough I took Shimosa and kept recruiting units non stop. Then I put all but three or four of my units on the ships and landed on the Odawara land to take it using naval support. The Edo sided with them and the clan from Hitachi also declared war on me. But once I took Odawara's first city with the blacksmith, I took from behind Edo (Musashi) and their stack at Shimosa vanished. I advanced towards Izu, declared war on the weakened Sunpu that had marched away and were defeated by someone West. I instantly sued for peace by making them my vassal. And got to Izu vis Sunpu's land while the Odawara's army had just crossed the forest to retake their first city. One spear levy rush later, I had a great starting position. I mean, I still resorted to the old exploits like selling military access and pushing my army forward by using the cav to initiate everything or leaving units hidden so the AI took the bait. But I simply couldn't get the Edo to stop backstabbing me. Plus, going into the North meant realm divide would likely happen around Miyagi, which would be a long time to keep defending against the Edo.
@sol2544
@sol2544 4 жыл бұрын
I dont consider those exploits. They only really are in the sense that ai wont push cav themselves. But its certainly viable considering how retreating works
@Shrapnel57
@Shrapnel57 4 жыл бұрын
There is one easy trick to capturing Shimosa on turn two. Move your Daimyo on edge of your border and recruit some units. If the AI comes out of the town use your Daimyos army to siege shimosa and attack the AI force with troops you recruited turn prior. AI will retreat and end up in your territory meaning they will dispand after you win an easy siege battle. This trick will only work if they step out of shimosa though.
@jaystrickland4151
@jaystrickland4151 4 жыл бұрын
I scupper the ships after I conquer Shimosa. Move in Bombard city, March army in and attack. If the naval bombardment his a lot of units you can often take the city first round. Especially with fire support.

Actually, if your willing to sacrifice the parrot guns, you can put them in woods on a hill and use shrapnel so when the enemy is marching beside of the woods you fire the parrot guns probably only do this if your play with sacrificing the guns.

do Choshu my campaign tactic is rather simple you can basicly eliminate the enemy clan in just 2 turns put your entire army in your capital in Nagato province recruit 2 units and research the tech for the building needed for Kihetai then end turn usualy they will come out during there turn and not recruit a thing then attack there army after there killed you should easily be able to take Suo

Completely up to you. Sadly it's not as black and white as I would've liked. There's no real reason to stop yourself for modernizing except to add flavor and change things up a little. Going modern is generally always best though.

So will you do the best army makeup for the shogunate and imperials eventually?
@MrSmartDonkeyLP
@MrSmartDonkeyLP 7 жыл бұрын
I might cover it in a different video, but honestly it's pretty straightforward. Get the best line infantry available, Shogunate/Imperial Infantry are infinitely recruit-able as opposed to the even better units, so you field a bunch of them. Get a couple Revolver Cavalry, some Armstong Guns and you've got an army that will beat anything. Simple as that, there's not a whole lot of imagination when it comes to building the strongest army. Which is why I figured I'd show off armies that are still effective, while not being cooky cutter. In my opinion the Kisho Ninja are a little too much, they work with the theme but I'd replace them for another 2 Yari Ki, and you honestly have yourself a really cool, yet still effective army.

I was bored so I ran a Jozai Hard campaign where I wanted to test out abandoning the home province and going for Kyushu (because it is so resource rich and easily defensible on higher difficulties). I did take out the clan to the north first and go the long way to kyushu by capturing sado on the way. However 2 things surprised me, Edo didn't declare on me... not once which is extremely unusual and even though I had every intention of abandoning my home province I didn't need to in the end because no one bothered heading over to capture it..... I ended up with Kyushu, Sado, the islands off Kyushu including the second gold Island, I had a gunsmith, Coal for cheaper ships, iron & copper.... it also meant when RD occurred the imperials were all but wiped out (not that it matter because I was bored and it was an early RD so I went republic). I was surprised given the distance but abandoning your weak home province and yoloing for resource rich Kyushu is totally viable up to Hard at least.
@machaiping
@machaiping 6 жыл бұрын
I just finished Tosa Republic on Normal, and from that experience, I seriously believe that Kyushu and Hokkaido existed exactly for players who do not want to declare war on clans with same allegiance around them to go and conquest. If you auto-pilot your navy straight to both islands, no other clans along the coast will aware of your presence and thus cannot declare war on you until you smashed those islands for yourself. Kyushu's riches already well-known for everyone and a go-to for Shogunate Clans, but Hokkaido is also great in the same way for Imperial Clans too; it has 2 coal mines, an iron mine, and a smuggling network. Not to mention that you're close to Smithing province probably owned by Sendai which you can take without diplomatic penalty to other Imperials too. From my experience most closest Smithing province to any given playable clan will be owned by clans of the same allegiance, perhaps to stop you from getting uber infantry too early? Except Satsuma, but they're easy mode clan so it's a given.

I'm also not 100% sure what it is. Unit variety is definitely an issue, I think the main thing for me is that early game you only really have Naginata Levy, and on Legendary difficulty they tend to run with 90% of their men left, whilst the AI's men still stay in fights much longer making it pretty difficult to do anything early on without having to seriously outnumber the enemy. That along with the lack of unit formation options, no Yari Wall and every unit is automatically in loose formation. It's just not very enjoyable to me.

Think the alliances, or perhaps just a campaign overview of Fall of the Samurai as a whole, do address those allegiances and the switching-of? After all, there sadly is no republic starting faction! Though... I thought it was Choshu that was tempted to sway, looking it up, it's former Tokugawa retainers that basically went: F-- this, we're going to Hokkaidõ and start our own democracy..
